I missed this video. The menorah 🕎 in the windows are so nice. Makes me realize how very disconnected to my Jewishness I am. We never had a menorah 🕎. I was raised with a tree. I was aware we were Jewish, but I don't believe any of my friends knew we were Jewish. Very sad

I'm Polish and we ate ours with sour cream or mushroom sauce. I now eat them with plain yoghurt. Much lighter tasting than the sour cream.

My brother, the consummate hipster, lived in Bed Sty for several years before relocating to Harlem and it has been very interesting I’m sure over the years for locals to see how the hipster influx ha so changed many parts of Brooklyn. But it seems like every 50 years, that happens with a new group of people. Not just my family but a lot of people of German descent, both Jewish and non-Jewish eat latkes with an apple chutney of sorts.
My family celebrates Christmas, but we have latkes as apart of our big family Christmas meal. Jewish culture, and especially the food is ingrained in New Yorker’s, at least lower NY 😊 Not all realize it though, but I love it 😊
I’ve always wanted to see a whole neighborhood lighting their menorah’s. I knew it would be beautiful to see 😊

To me, it should be enjoyed by everyone as it definitely represents the season of Hope.
Although raised Catholic, my ancestry is Sefardic Jewish (they were originally from Spain). I do not practice any actual form of religion but respect all.
By the way, in my many years of living in NY, the majority of hipsters that I knew were Jewish.

It's a good question. It's I think driven by how deeply misunderstood I felt when I was Hasidic, and how much I wanted "my people" to be humanized. Even though I left, I still feel like it's a rich world and the deep desire to share that.

This was very beautiful. I lived in Manhattan for several years and knew very little about the vibrant community just across the bridge. I would have loved to see the beautiful candle lighting from the streett as you did. Are all 8 nights are celebrated in the same quiet manner? Thanks for educating us.

@@FriedaVizelBrooklyn Thanks for your reply! I wanted to add that it was striking and peaceful to see the Christmas trees across the quiet dimly lit street. An encouraging statement of coexistence. I hope Jews know that many Christians respect the special place of Jews in the history of humanity (not to me tion that Jesus himself was a Jew) and regularly pray for our Jewish brothers and sisters....not praying to convert but just for their well being.

Yes, a lot of Hasidic coloring books depict Jews all through history as modern Hasidic Jews. It's very anachronistic.
Why do they light in window not on at table ?
It's the custom to show the world the miracle of Chanukah. So you do it at the window or a door.

HI Frieda! I usually love your videos, but this time I have mixed feelings. Beautiful seeing the menorahs in the windows. But, what a watered down version of the Chanuka story! The "educated" Greek conquerors (and your endless repetition of "educated" implying that the Jews were not...) used every means to force the monotheistic Jews to worship the Greek idols, including setting up said idols in the Holy Temple, defiling the temple and systematically defiling and destroying all of the holy oil used to light the Menora in the Temple.( Hence the miracle, when the victorious Jews returned to the Temple they found only o n e flask of pure oil left to light the Menora. That oil, which should have lasted for only one day, miraculously continued to burn for eight days until new oil could be prepared.) The Jews were willing to die for their faith and the enlightened Greeks had no problem with wholesale murder of men. women and children whose crime was refusing to bow down to idols, to violate the Sabbath and circumcising their sons. This last was a capital sin , violating the Greek worship of beauty in all forms, including public nudity in the sports arena . Please, please , Jews in the US have to contend with all the tinsel and glitter of the commercialized December holiday, don"t sell Chanuka so short! It was a tremendous victory, both political and spiritual.

I think she meant that the ancient Greek culture was and is looked at as more refined than the other cultures of the antiquity. Just think about the complexity of the Greek philosophers or the infinite mathematical rules set by their mathematicians and physists.
Greek philosophy was unable to cope with the concept of religious observance, of philosophy as part of real life rather than utopical, theoretical. Hence their opposition to everything Judaism stands for. Refined indeed! Only wealthy males were "citizens", homosexuality was the ideal, women were treated as mindless chattle, decorative at the best. Considering the battles waged in the land of Israel in the the of the Greek king Antiochus, the subjugation of the local population who refused to give in, I'd hardly call them truly refined., Greek philosophy didn't/doesn't stand up to reality (study the Kuzari by R' Yehuda Halevi, the philosopher says that acts are unimportant, only wisdom has any value. } whereas Judaism demands both study and acts. Understand that Chanuka celebrates "the victory of the few over the many, the pure over the impure, evil in the hands of the just" (from the al Hanisim prayer recited daily throughout Chanuka). Light over darkness, "in those times and in our present day. בימים ההם ובזמן הזה)

The coloring book is for young children, It's not meant to be complicated. It explains the story in a way that a child can understand. Older children get more through education from studying biblical sources.
@@lillianglick4054 I agree though what the Greeks didn't like was the G-d part of the equation. They were people focused. Jews were G-d focused. If the Jews did our traditions for the benefit of our people it would've been fine with the Greeks. They believe in the ultimate and absolute value of people. Everything was to that end. Hence the self involved, debaucherous behavior.
The war was as much a civil war, Jew against Jew, as it was Jew against Greek. It's wasn't so much about oppression, but assimilation.

I know the basic history that kids learn about hannukah is often very simplified but I think you didn't say it really correctly that it's about the intellectual sort of modernized way of looking at the world versus the old Jewish way or religious way. there's been a lot of research done on this and I will reference a good article below but most theories are that what happened was there was actually a civil war between the Jews who were hellenized and who brought in foreign practices and beliefs but still holds true to at least the core of but then there were the other side who felt that any change especially one of philosophical changes that might be fundamental like belief in one God or in social relationships over focused on aesthetics etc but these would destroy the foundation of judaism. so the Syrian Greeks or the Seleucids as they are called cannot handle having such discord between their Jewish population and so they had to pick sides and so they decided with the hellenists and they outlawed circumcision and the new month and the Sabbath because those were core beliefs and their intention was to erupt a civil war and they even brought in idle worship into the temple as a final straw. so the pro Torah stringent had no other option but to respond with force. there really wasn't against modernization or intelligence per se it was about changing the fundamentals of judaism. here is a very nice source for a contemporary academic and also still traditionally acceptable approach to this explanation that I shared. www.huffpost.com/entry/hanukkah-greeks-grudge_b_1153588
Pretty good. I think I simplified the narrative of teh coloring book. A lot of commentors took issue with how I portrayed it, and it’s definitely not the whole story of Chanukah as taught to these kids. Thanks for the comment.

The Greeks defiled the Temple! The Maccabees fought and forced the Greeks out of the Temple so the Temple was no longer defiled with idols etc...Chanukah is all about the rededication of the Alter in the Temple.
I won't get into observant Jews being called 'more religious'. It's complicated.
I'm Ultra Orthodox. I'd also call conservative or reform religious. Because they are practicing religion in the way they want to.

The title of 'Chanukah Night' would give an outsider the wrong idea about the holiday, that it's one night. I know that you're saying more though people don't always get those details. Just a suggestion. You're the decider of channel content.
