I've only heard bits and pieces of Rocky Athas and to be honest I much prefer Buddy Whittington's general style and sound. I know BW was in Mayall's band longer than any other guitar player even with John's rep for firing and hiring. It's amazing, when you think of it, that Mayall had Clapton, Green and Taylor in his band all within about three or four years. He'd probably had enough of Les Pauls through Marshalls for a while...Hahahaha
1:43 you have just too short arms :-) nice fooling around with a classic blues riff (Jimmy Reed and the off-beat Hooker) changing it rhythmically and harmonicly. later on some kind of Hendrix ballad stuff and even later some folky tunes. Good to hear you playing the acoustic box aswell.
Maybe you should give thumb pick a try - you do not drop them so often I guess :-) on the other side if you drop the plectron frequently and have to pick it up it has almost the effect of a yoga session.
This New year a friend told me. "Here Joseph, I know you love electric guitar ( my favorite song is 'Red House' live from the album in the west, Hendrix....I heard it when I was 15), you take my daughter's guitar and practice". So I did 2 or 3 songs. But like you, I play the electric lake an acoustic, héhé.
"As my bald spot spreads... my nails get weaker", now there's an interesting theory. I still have hair but it's a good deal thinner on top than in my youth but my nails have always been quite thin and weak. Now they'll split if I look at them long enough. What's the connection? I have a guitar playing daughter who only finger picks and her nails make the strings ring out like heavy finger picks. Wish I'd gotten some of that. Aren't our hair and nails basically the same stuff, biologically?
Yeah! Hair and nails both keratin. I was half joking about the bald spot but it is certainly true that I have less hair than 10 years ago and my nails are weaker..... Who knows? Sometimes I'm happy to just get up in the morning so to wish for nails as well is probably pushing it.. Hahahahahaha Thanks ever so much for dropping by.
As a kid my mother used to drink Knox gelatin because women though it strengthened their nails, since proven to be unfounded. I've used some of my wife's and daughter's nail strengthening polish. I think there are all sorts of things you can do from layering tissue and superglue through to bespoke false nails which, apparently sound great. I think never putting your hands in water is a must too, but frankly who can live like that?

Mr. Mayall was a bold man for making that album. His last electric guitarist Rocky Athas (Texas guy) is still around & doing his thing.
