Great discussion. I've been researching and following the demographic issue for 8+ years now, very good points raised. One thing that was missing though is discussing the mental strain that sets in when a society begins aging and shrinking. America has long relied on a spirit of hope for the future because everything seemed to be improving in the future, more people, more wealth, more cities, more homes.. etc.. when cities begin shrinking, when the economy is shrinking, when there aren't as many kids around.. the psychological impact will be profound. Would love to hear Dustin's thoughts on that aspect.

Yes, it will be depressing for many. Worse however will be the economy. As the population gets older and smaller consumption will shrink. Plenty of businesses will earn a lot less money as time goes by. That will affect everything.
I think we're past the peak. I think we're already on the way down, only not extremely fast just yet. However I think we'll start noticing the downward trend in the next couple of decades. We're past the point of no return. The question is just "how low and how fast"?

Young people will start fleeing many countries and flock to stronger countries.

@@Brent-z2s Well educated Europeans will leave for the United States. Only trouble is that they will compete with Indians who are willing to work for half the pay. Life in the US will be hard, but probably better than the future for people in Europe.

17:25 have you guys heard of a futurist named Robin Hansen (Sp?)? Not sure if you’ve had him on the show yet or not, but he and another guy named Samo Burja both are very interested in the many possibilities for the future in a world of declining population.
It really depends on how optimistic you are on artificial intelligence and how you think people will move. Personally, I think the world will be much more religious, and many people will try to offset the increase in cost of food by having some backyard chickens and a garden, just like they do all over many Eastern European countries today.
Otherwise, I actually think people will continue to pile into the larger cities and it’s the rural areas that will depopulate. This is what’s going on in South Korea. The entire country is becoming more empty while Seoul is still growing since young people feel like they have to flock to the only city with any economic growth. So, even though the country is depopulating, the housing prices are going up for where people want to live. This pushes birth rates down further.

    Choose :
    Fertility?
    Or Productivity?
    You can't have both.

In democracies the older people will continue to vote themselves more benefits. Young people will flee or give up.
