Laika ,in my opinion is one of the most underrated animation houses out there they have consistently producing great animated features,and they never disappoint.
First of all: Laika is way overdue for that best animated feature Oscar Second of all: Laika's movies don't get nearly the box office they deserve! What the hell is this projection that "Missing Link" will open with a meager 5 million?! This movie is pure art!
Beautiful craftsmanship. I'm afraid this kind of labor of love doesn't pay off in todays world, where movies and shows have become so much of an interchangable commodity.
i was tossing up between watching it in the cinemas or not, but the overwhelmingly awe-inspired reviews makes me think i need to support this art studio that clearly puts so much passion and soul into their work
Educated into art, you appreciate the amount of hard work that goes into things like this, also because I do a lot of detailed work in my course. It’s sad how not a lot of people know about Laika making stop motion animated movies because they are truly spectacular.
I saw the movie and I loved it, the humor, the gags and the fun story! The fact that it is mainly hand animated is the charm and beauty of this timeless art form. CG animation becomes obsolete after one year or less due to its reliant on software tech. which always changes every year making the previous outdated.
I loved how the unique faces were used to create a wider range of facial expressions, but the smoothness was... Weird. When the character did a long and slow mouth movement, you could see a lot of jittering around the mouth, an unavoidable side effect of using a bunch of separate 3D-printed mouths.
When they first started laika was my favorite , because they pushed everything with stop motion. They used it to do just about everything. Now, they seen to be moving away from that, from the warmth that stop motion gives, and the realism, to a cold, and work out medium CG. Disappointed to see they've used so much CG.
I just hope that the 3D printer doesn't replace handmade puppers completely, because I'm dreaming of working on stop motion movies and don't want to be late for that 😥
The only jarring note what was otherwise brilliant animation was the Pine Forest. I thought the white wash hiding the pine trees made them look computer-generated; when it was removed here the color looks far more natural but then we can really see how computer-generated the trees were. A let-down when so much had gone into the rest of the movie. Oh, and the ice cliff hanging scene was something more akin to Warner Bros than Laika.
106000 unique print... hm... if you do the math: 106000/24/60=> 73,6 You can get a 73,6 minute long movie out of that, if each print used once. They could almost print each frame out, and photograph. But then whats the point? :) I know multiple characters in one shot are messing up calculation.
Jakab Ágó sometimes a facial expression is held for multiple frames, depending on what’s being said or done. We don’t print an individual face per frame if we can just leave the face on. Also sometimes faces are animated on twos. :)
laika have completely lost their way. they just try to make stop motion do what cgi does. they have the worst of both worlds. they actually just want to be cgi, it seems to me, but want the kudos of being stop motion. it doesn't even look remotely stop motion. it's all pointless.

Mary McFly : no no, there is no hate involved here. aardman was founded in the 70s or so, laika in 2004, or 05? so it is definitely more likely that laika copied more stuff from aardman. laika probably contributes to the industry as well, but aardman is the frontrunner here...and I am not british or so www.aardman.com/the-studio/history/
@@checotey i agree with that, aardman are pioneers too, i am sure they learnt something from them, but its not like they are copying them, its more like learning the good techniques from the vets and sharing the progress, i dont think laika thinks aardman copies them just because they now incorporate that tech to their animation, because their styles are so different, its more loke a win win for everyone evolving the craft ;) im not brit either but i love their accent lol.

Laika is so amazing. Every movie I've seen of their's is on my top ten favorite movies.

The figures faces reminded me of Dwight cutting off the cpr dummy face.

So... you model the faces digitally, 3D print them, and then take photos to get them back in the computer. 🤨
