Fluke 83 Multimeter tutorial on How To disassemble and re-assemble. A closer look at the display, and the elastomeric connectors that cause faded missing segments.
A quick way to fix a faded display with missing segments is to clean the elastomeric connectors that connect to the LCD. This is a temporary fix. Simply use rubbing alcohol and cotton swab to clean the top and bottom edges of the elastomers. Re-insert them, and your meter should be good to go for a little while. Your display will have the same problem again if it is cleaned. The reason is because the old style pink elastomers lose their bounce and are not providing good connection from the LCD to the Main PCB. We recommend replacing the elastomers.
Important note: Older Fluke Multimeter plastic may become brittle over time. Always use best practices and care when attempting to pry certain parts. Many parts are no longer available, but can be swapped out from parts units.
