I like the STOP READ part!!! I do it and almost every video I watch people who do speed runs, drag runs, etc say it as well!!! Another awesome video Raz!!!! Happy RC’ing Y’all!!!!
I have run a number of XLX2's with LMT motors in SAW boats and out of any ESC, the XLX2 has been bulletproof. No problems running over 500A for several seconds. The big difference between boats and cars is the braking difference. Sounds like the ESC's cannot regen that huge amount of energy when you are trying to stop from 180+mph. I have also tested the MGM's including the 80063 and don't think this will fair any better than the Castle will. Along with others advice it sounds like it is time to add mechanical or aero brakes of some type. BTW, The ironless Lehner design's have very little torque ripple compared to the 4-pole TP and Castle motor designs. The 2-pole design also produces a very smooth Sinus waveform so compared to most other motor topologies these are very easy to drive from an ESC perspective. In SAW boat records, Lehner's hold all the top spots from single 1545's to twin 3080's. They are beasts when you have an ESC and lipo that can support their appetite for power. Don't give up on the XLX2 and 3060 combo yet.
I am with Tyler on this. I have run many of these XLX2 controllers in the 45k+ loaded rpm range the power delivery and Temps show there is good communication between the castle and lehner motor. 450 Amp pulls have been no issue in several of my boats. I don't think you will do any better with an mgm controller in my opinion you'll have worse top end performance especially after talking to people familiar with the new controller. A brake system on the driveline might be extremely easy to install. If you want to jump at this again with this rig before making any hardware changes to the rig I'd try a HW Max 4, still this won't solve the problem associated with trying to use an electric motor as the brake at almost 200 mph. Scorched could easily make a servo actuated brake system using parts similar to what they use for the 5T, some of the systems use real brake pad material I imagine similar material to mtb brakes. After all, 1/8 scale buggies still run systems like this although balancing and precision would have to be just as important as any other part of this rig so $$, but who cares when you're going those speeds.
It was a bad day at the zoo for sure. It wasn't a failure, it was an expensive day of learning what doesn't work. To paraphrase Edison, I haven't failed, I just learned 700 ways how not to succeed. You recently hit 204 MPH for Gods sake! That speed was unheard of until very recent months. You've got this buddy!
The mgm x2 series is proven. Working with the x3 and so far no flames and over1000 phase amps, but around 900 amps it starts to limit phase power. Around 1100 amps is where the x3 fully cuts. It’s more about tuning the esc so it reaches max output @ max rpms. Kinda has a perfect pass built in. Take a lot of parking lot time to understand it first before heading to the runway. Also the 3080/4 is a beast vs the 3060, but powering them in a space limited situation….might need James Mckoy and Kevin’s stretch chassis and the mgm 1000 amp esc
Raz is back, constantly, missed your videos for sure! We all have bad days and not every is tested to work together. I don’t know enough about the systems to figure it out but I would say your thinking down the right path. Obviously they motor and esc don’t like a spike in something. 😞 like you said you can’t fault either manufacturer it is what it is. One of those sucky expensive lessons. Keep it up, your videos keep me entertained and I learn something new each time I watch them.
What does it matter if u say stop and read every time or no time? Whoever is so petty and just hates need to find something they can watch that's perfect in every aspect for them. And good luck on finding something that is perfect in every way to anyone or everyone. Cool video by the way. Keep them coming
After my experience of melting all the solder off the board of my XLX2 just bashing in a K8, I would never even think that the XLX2 would handle that motor. I wouldn’t even think of running that combo. If I were using that motor, I would only use the MGM ESC’s.
Man I'm a bit old skool and came up in the days of nicd packs and mod brushed motors, I was pumped to get my XTM stadium truck up to 40-45 with a speed gem 12 turn brushed motor and 1,500 nicd pack🤣 we got it easy today boys compared to 17 years ago 😁
Could you run a setup with mechanical brakes? Sounds like you've pushed the limit to where it's actually necessary. Either that, or a parachute... Keep it up man! I love what you're doing, and can't wait to see what you do next. Stop, read...lol
Ouch! Sorry to see that happen Raz. Now, using my extensive knowledge of engineering and physics, I can confidently say that the amount of energy generated while stopping the car is.....some Joules....
The regen will spike in voltage if not properly dumped back into the battery and fry the ESC. I build supercap controllers for competition robots, and the rules say we can only max at 50 watts from the battery, so these supercaps act as buffers when we need more power. Other teams have fried a lot of controllers and ESCs from preventing all the regen going back to the battery because negative watts don't count on the monitoring device and all the energy is effecticely "wasted" in terms of the rules. However when the controller doesn't react in time to take all that energy and stuff it into the capacitors, the voltage spikes to over 100 volts (because we had burnt 100V rated mosfets) on a 6s or 24 volt system. And compared to that RC car of yours, our motors are quite weak.
Raz, my friend. This is back voltage. The motor tries to send voltage back into the esc it's more than the esc can handle. If you don't hit the breaks and went mechanical you won't have a problem.

Cant wait to see the dual 2028 1700's currently running one in my Limitless V2, plan to eventually get a GT body and run dual! Sorry to see everything letting out the magic smoke :(
You could just try limit the braking with the castle software. If you think about it, you are trying to stop the car in a lot less distance than you are accelerating it, creating a lot more load under brakes than under power so it makes sense the motor is trying to feed more amps back into the esc under braking than the esc is giving to the motor to accelerate it.
Great video dude. Looking forward to the PP springs. But. You really want to look into doing your own Perfect Pass foams. Your products are easy to get. Foams from other companies are extremely hard to come by. Just a thought.
There a phrase crawler community, play brake repeat, that what I see in this video, and for me Raz you're always a inspiring person, just keep going with your forehead high
you should try to put a capacitor ramp of at least 20,000uf or even a little more! when you activate the braking you have a return of energy and there the ESC 🔥
I know it would probably involve more on the car than desired, as well as weight. And I don't know how well it would slow a car going 180mph down , buuut what about incorporating a physical handbrake. Aborting all use of the esc braking and using a perfect pass servo with a fancy lil arrma handbrake.
Days like this suck but it’s definitely just part of the hobby. As a basher I’ve fully switched to Hobbywing for ESCs because they have a no questions asked RMA

is there no way to put a tracking system on teh cars so you can mark a spot at the end of the runway and the system in the car will aim for the spot constantly so you dont need any steering input as the car would auto align ?
Thanks once again for your awesome content Raz. Pardon my ignorance (I'm not an RC car guy) but what is that rattling noise when the cars are rocked back and forth - is it some sort of dis-engaged gear or something?
That's the gears between the axil and motor, very strong magnts in these brushless motors and when you spin the wheels the rotor in the motor is going through the magnet phases. Very clunky when not being powered but super smooth when you run some volts through them.
Maybe current is bifurcated in two windings and excessive current only going to one phase in the line it's possible the DC injection under lenz law is to great hence only one phase gets toasted 🤔. Could also be CEMF I would test braking current in a lower load scenario to see what the load is on the esc logs
I’m also going to build a twin 2028 infraction, but it seems like your gonna get to it before me, but it I guess I’ll be able to see how it would act and how to plan mine out 😅
Love to see you test the MGM X3! That Lehner looks fancy and with that internal fan spinning at those speeds taking away the heat directly from its source it should break single motor records! What about dialing down brake force in the esc?
@@RecklessRcuk really good specs and twice the money of an XLX2... Should at least have same performance or durability or full warranty... I'm not going to be a guinea pig for twice the money... @@rcspeedrunner there’s no doubt in the ability or reliability of the mgm esc, I think they just need a bit of time and feedback and they will get there with it
I had a similar issue with a Lehner motor (2250 1100 KV), in a Kyosho Twin force (electric solid axle MT) converted to a center diff, the esc I used was a MGM 16026 esc. I had made some speed run type passes and it suddenly stopped working, I never got a good answer from MGM and shipping it for a replacement was high (US to Germany) so i just chalked it up to live and learn. Mind you this was in like 2005/2006 when I did this, but just letting you know I had the same issue with an MGM esc. What I think happened? Admittedly I didn't think of this then, we never bothered with ripple or anything like that back then, but seeing your issue made me think about it. The caps were not big enough to absorb the ripple. If Lehner is still doing 2 poles motors I think that long hit (full half turn of the rotor) is causing massive ripples where the 4/6 poles are making smaller faster ripples and more easily managed, the big ripple can't be so easily handled. If there was a bigger cap bank it might help mitigate. When you get the MGM esc try the 4/6 poles first and see what happens, you know they work with the castle esc, so they should work with the MGM just as well. I think it's the motor 2 pole causing massive ripples
Hi Raz love the show I see you having problem with brakes. Esc burning out have you ever thought about doing? What real cars do and it is running a parachute? This is a small one in case of emergency. Especially when you lose control of the car the chute will slow it down and straightened it out.
You can convert the 6 outputs to 3 outputs like you did on the 3060, but when braking the ESC on an RC car shortcuts the outputs to create resistance and a braking force... I think this is called "plugging", I'm not an electrical engineer, but maybe thats where it goes wrong...
I've been watching a lot of your videos. I bought a vendetta on sale to try speed running out. Hoping to get it to 100mph. As my skill grows I might try a serious build like you.
Raz what switch plate is that? That looks great for wire management. I recently reached out to pps to ask them if they could make one like that but have not heard nothing from them. Thank you.
You mentioned the fact that some other vehicles have disk breaks. Any plans on adding disk breaks to your rigs to lessen the draw on the esc to stop them?
Well I suppose you could install a mechanical break directly on the motor pinion gear, and only have the esc brake set to like 30%. The mecanical brake does the rest.
sounds like that motors requires more power than the esc can handle. has the ESC working too hard by allowing too much of a current to flow through. larger internal resistors and capacitors.
Maybe put a big low esr capacitor on it so if you brake on the motor you don’t have allot off “noice” in the system 🤷🏼♂️ it works on race drones so the voltage spikes won’t get out off control i don’t know if it’s the same in rc cars 🤷🏼♂️
Raz you need to look into using express lrs or tbs crossfire on your cars u can use them with your futaba radio these radio link have gone miles out with no problem or latency
hey why you never try something hobbywing max 4 ? is it too big? something else? genuinely curious.. great video as always and so sorry about the ESCs..
Dam 😮 expensive few runs that . Most unfortunate raz. A lot of forces at work during braking. Hopefully can sort the issue and see great things from that motor. Maybe some rotors rather than motor braking.
So I would say to test that theory use another xlx2 u got the runway it’s a big enough space see how fast you could get up too and don’t use the break let it gradually slow down there for when it stops and if it still works that there is proven but if it stops working n didn’t use the break and something else is wrong and by the way since both perfect past driveshafts are not in stock and you said you’re working on something it kind of sounded to me it may be different I don’t know I’m just assuming however will the old ones ever be back in stock 😂

I've been watching a lot of your videos. I bought a vendetta on sale to try speed running out. Hoping to get it to 100mph. As my skill grows I might try a serious build like you.
Mechanical breaks and parachute it is!!💸💸💸😜
That’s a 2pole motor right? If so that could be the reason. Like you said too much ripple. Maybe try a cap pack I dunno.
Anyone put chutes on one yet?
“No breaks again” famous last words buddy
hey why you never try something hobbywing max 4 ? is it too big? something else? genuinely curious.. great video as always and so sorry about the ESCs..
Could you possibly install the mechanical brake module from some of the arrma 6s cars and just disable the motor braking all together
maybe it needs stronger bullets. im sure ur right about the ripple, but it could be the bullets not being able to handle it anymore
Why do some brushless motors have 6 wires? Is it for sensoring or something?
Dam 😮 expensive few runs that . Most unfortunate raz. A lot of forces at work during braking. Hopefully can sort the issue and see great things from that motor. Maybe some rotors rather than motor braking.
GEEEZUZ !! @0:59
If you can find a set of wheels with a bigger diameter you might get faster speeds. Do you balance the wheels? That might be a stupid question lol
You definitely need a sporship by Castle and Hobbywing that would be nice 😅.
Any idea when the monster servo will be available?? Thank you for all your knowledge and entertaining content.
Thank you!
And yes we are hoping a week
Oh no and I'm griping about a servo lol
do you dyno the motors?
that motor/esc combo asks for a chute in the back of the car :D
Maybe a center section from a nitro buggy with the brake setup?
Would you consider using a mechanical brake just to be able to use that motor with the xlx2?
Btw is negative ripple when the motor is used for braking?
Expensive speed runs $$$$
Would like to see you speed run some fg 5th scale.
Yay... Razzy
