To the people to their east, Russia has played the role of a Western imperialist nicely. I've never understood how they get away with portraying themselves as some great force for anti-colonialism. Any support they've given to anti-colonial movements has always been first and foremost about screwing with their European imperialist peers.

      Russian here.
Russia doesn't have a particular problem with how they treated minorities.
Although they still post "for rent" "for slavs only", meaning white people only, which BTW would be totally unacceptable in US, but still - it's just not their biggest problem, which is why this conversation is of limited use.
They had a problem with how they treated EVERYONE (except rich foreigners) ... which was much worse than even how Americans treated minorities.
And their incredibly weak and toothless society.
You as an American will never get to witness struggles of russian family living in Siberia for $100-200/month. But they are there, constantly surviving. Trying to stay alive as opposed to living.
I'm treated significantly better in US vs how I was treated in Russia, despite being Russian. Even thugs are somehow more educated and more polite in the US.

The bojarins never had their private property, it could be taken by the czar on a whim. There was no parliamentary tradition, even among the high society. It was always strong/vicious/violent leader and his peasants. So it is very difficult for an average russian to understand the principles of self-governance or the need for it, as it is epigenetically coded to be obedient or else you die/live in poverty.

More evidence that Russians are linked top Finno-Ugric / Mongolians and not Slavic Europeans people like Ukrainians and Polish ..
      1. Lets look at the city of Perm its Location is in Krai Russia Perm is a city and the administrative centerof Perm Krai, Russia, located on the banks of the Kama River near the Ural Mountains.
The name Perm is of Finno-Ugric etymology, likely of Uralic origin (Komi-Permyak: Перем, Perem; Komi: Перым, Perym). Komi is a member of the Permic group of Finno-Ugric languages, which is also named for Perm. In Finnish and Vepsian perämaa means "far-away land"; similarly, in Hungarian perem means "edge" or "verge". The geologic period of the Permian takes its name from the toponym.
Perm is located in the old Perman area, which was originally inhabited by Finno-Ugric peoples. Perm was first mentioned as the village of Yagoshikha (Ягошиха) in 1647; however, the history of the modern city of Perm starts with the development of the Ural region by Tsar Peter the Great. Vasily Tatishchev, appointed by the Tsar as a chief manager of Ural factories, founded Perm together with another major center of the Ural region, Yekaterinburg.
      More DNA evidence
      2. TO understand how and why Russians, in fact, are if Finno-Ugric descent and are NOT Slavic decent /ppl. like Ukrainians and Polish ppl are, we first have need to look at where the Finno-Ugric ppl. came from and what is a Finno-Ugric people and their background culture, ancestry, geneticists...
The Russian DNA is evidence that they (Russians are NOT white Europeans). Testes of today's Russian males DNA have shown that they, like their DNA brothers the Finnish people and share most of their chromosomes with the Chinese, and Mongolians (the Mongolian chromosomes ) just like the Finnish people do as well !!
According to a 2008 study, the mitochondrial lines of the Hungarians Finno-Ugric tribes are indistinct from that of neighboring Slavs like Polish and Ukrainians !!! A recent study has found that haplogroup NO of the Finno-Ugric peoples and their descendants probably spread to today's Russia from Northern China about 12,000-14,000 years ago.
Take a look at the facts about The exonym "Hungarian" comes from "Ugor".in 895 The Magyars/Hungarians belonged to the Onogur tribal alliance, and it is possible that they became its ethnic majority The Hungarian people refer to themselves by the demonym "Magyar" rather than "Hungarian". "Magyar" is Finno-Ugric from the Old Hungarian "mogyër". "Magyar" possibly derived from the name of the most prominent Hungarian tribe, the "Megyer". The tribal name "Megyer" became "Magyar" in reference to the Hungarian people as a whole
Anthropologically, the type of Magyars of the conquest phase shows similarity to that of the Andronovo people, in particular of the Sarmatian groups around the southern Urals. The Turanid (South-Siberian) and the Uralid types from the Europo-Mongoloids were dominant among the conquering Hungarians .. And this is the same as you will find in Russians finish today !!!
According to a 2008 study, the mitochondrial lines of the Hungarians are clearly indistinct from that of neighboring Slavs like Ukrainians and Polish people ..
The Hungarians like the Finish are of the same as Magyars what we today call Hungarian. (Magyar" is Finno-Ugric ) Four 10th century skeletons from well documented cemeteries in Hungary of ancient Magyar individuals were sampled. Two of the four males belonged to Y-DNA Haplogroup N confirming their Finno-Ugric origin that proves and supports the historical clams that todays Finish and Hungarians come from Turanid (South-Siberian) and lived around what we today call norther and eastern part of Russia ..
The Finno-Ugric peoples are any of several peoples of Eurasia who speak languages of the Finno-Ugric group Karelians, Finns, Udmurts and Komis. The traditional area of the indigenous Sami people is in Northern Finland and the Kola Peninsula in Northwest Russia and is known as Sápmi. Some other Finno-Ugric peoples have autonomous republics in Russia: Karelians (Republic of Karelia), Komi (Komi Republic), Udmurts (Udmurt Republic), Mari (Mari El Republic), and Mordvins (Moksha and Erzya; Republic of Mordovia).
German anthropologist J. F. Blumenbach compared Finnish, Sami (the Arctic reindeer herders) and Mongolian skulls and concluded that the Finns were ‘mongoloid’ and not ‘white’ like the Swedes or Finland’s Swedish-speaking aristocracy. This was widely accepted and led to the Turanian theory - that both the Finns and Sami had originally come from the East - as well as strengthening the view, according to Finland-Swede sociologist Nina af Enehjelm, that Finns were somehow ‘other’..
He found that Sami, Estonian, Hungarian were from the same family but so were a series of languages across Siberia such as Komi and Mari. And even languages like Mongolian seemed to have a similar grammatical structure. This led to the ‘Migration Theory,’ the Finno-Ugric peoples arrived in Europe from Mongolia around three thousand years ago and finally got to what to day is Finland and northern part of Russia. The more recent discovery of genetics has added further evidence to the ‘Mongol’ claim. Geneticist Richard Kittles found in 1998 that Finns have ‘Dual Origins’ between Finno-Ugric and Mongoloid as measured by their ‘Y Chromosome Haplotype Variation.’ Other geneticists estimated that Finno-Ugric have between 10 percent and a quarter mongoloid genes..
And in 2003, Slovenian geneticist Andrej Marusic observed that the Finnish and Russian propensity to alcoholism could be explained by the Mongolian ADH22 gene ‘which is common in Eastern peoples but almost unheard of Europe.’
Vladimir Lenin may have had Mordvin ancestry. There is a belief that President Vladimir Putin of Russia is potentially of Finno-Ugric Vepsian ancestry..
failures by Russians to never real get out it backward ways I think you can assigned to being "too Finish Urgic Mogoliish “ - meaning, primitive, backwards, culturally un-European.
When Russians attempt to define their own race and assert that they are European it just comes over as false, and as fare as todays scientific research goes, we can now conclude with certainty, Russian are not white europeans it is a myth !!!
Russians try too claim they are something they are not i!! Russians are NOT Western European (Russians have claim to be for a long time it goes back to Peter the great wish to be a European nation ) but it is nothing but a myth a type of fake nationalistic, myopic, backwardness , and unaccepting of objective truth that Russians are in-fact nothing more than dissidents of Finno-Ugric tribes that assimilated with Mongolians back when the land of Moskal ( northern Russia ) was annexes by the Mongolians and made it a part of the Golden Horde…
(unlike the Real slavic people the Ukrainians and polish people that never assimilated with Mongolian occupiers )
The Russian DNA is evidence that they are not white europeans. Testes of todays Russian males DNA have shows that they, like their ethnic brothers the Finnish people, share most of their chromosomes with the Chinese, and Mongolians (the Mongolian chromosomes ) just like the Finnish people do as well !! This has proven without a doubt that Russian are not European as they share their DNA with the Mongolians and the study also shows that no other Europeans (with the exception of Finno-Ugric people) share those same chromosome structor with the Mongolians like Russians do !! ..And why is this you ask ..
Answer… because Russians are Finno-Ugric people that assimilated with Mongolians and NOT white Europeans like Slavic or Germanic people are..
Why is it so vitally important to find this proof you ask ?
Answer… It shows a systematic falsification by Russia that started with Peter to falsify its history and links to Europe so Moscow can put down claim to the Kievan Russia history , cultural and lands !!
What conclusion can we take out of all this data ??
      1. Russians are NOT slavic it is a myth !!
      2. Russians are closer genetically linked to Finno-Ugric and Mongolians
      3. Slavic people like polish and Ukrainians are not genetically linked to Finno-Ugric and Mongolians..
      4. Russians need to reevaluate their own history and except the facts that they are nothing genetically to do with slavic peoples heritage and therefor have no calm to slavic lands !!

I don't think Russia sees itself as a natural ruler - at least since the end of the civil war. Actually I can think of only one country that sees itself as a natural ruler and it's an ocean away from Europe.
Russia is the most ethnically diverse country in the world. It's also the country with where most terrorist attacks happen. That's why the Russian govenment always worried about the stability of its neighbouring countries. We can disagree with their government on how they should act but if we keep saying that Russia has an ingrained cultural charachteristic - the urge to rule the world - and if we keep making no effort to understand their preocupations we'll never be able to help them and their neghboring countries to have a healthier relationship.
I disagree a lot with what Putin does - like invading Ukraine - but something I'm trying to learn is how a pro-European liberal guy became what he is today ... what caused that? BTW, I do understand why his politics tends to be authoritarian and being from Brazil I can't disagree with him (I do disagree with his excesses, though). Brazil became a republic in 1889 but it only became a real democracy after a dictatoship that started in 1930 and ended in 1945. Gen. Getulio Vargas was the dictator who would later be elected president in 1950. From the first days of his term, Vargas faced ruthless opposition and the political situation in Brazil got so unstable that many feared a civil war. In 1954, Getúlio Vargas made the only thing he could to silence the oposition and at the same time avoid a civil war: he shot himself in the heart.
Vargas is still admired and is known as The Father of the Poor because of legislations he imposed during this authoritarian government. In the same manner, there's a reason why Putin still holds high levels of popularity in Russia. Here's one of them: from 1991 to 2001 there was an excess death in the adult population estimated to be between 2.5 and 3 million people. Japan lost 2.2 million people during WWI and 3 million people died during the 17 year long Vietnam conflict. The average height of the Russians who were born in that period is 1 centimeter sorter than those who were bron before 1990 and after 2000. This drop in height is observed during periods of famine and war. BTW, the situation in Ukraine wasn't much different as the table bellow from the World Bank shows:
      data.worldbank.org/indicator/SP.DYN.LE00.IN?end=2001&locations=RU-UA&start=1990
remember that Ukraine is warmer, has a smaller population and has more arable land. The drop in life expectancy is quite similar, though.
      Why did that happen?

Factoring in the fact that majority of Russians live in Europe, alongside the predominant pre-Bolshevik Slavic culture, Russia is a European country.
However upon the decline of Orthodox Christianity and pan-Slavism (which tied both Russia and the Balkans together) due to the Soviets, it can be argued that Russia today does not share the common values held by other Europeans, mainly due to its disconnect with Slavs and Orthodox nations (Czechs and Greeks for example were heavily pro Russian for most of their history until the Soviet Union).
One can consider Russia a unique civilisation with historically heavy Byzantine influence, with its elite based in Europe, or one can argue it is simply a European nation with many similarities to Balkan and East European states. But to say Russia isn't European or that it is an Asian nation is ignorant of its history and culture.

I would not consider Russians any less European than Bosnians, Albanians, Southern Italians or the Spanish who - as ethnic groups - have considerable non-European admixture, with the former two adopting Turco-Persian names, the Islamic faith and Near Eastern customs.

The Asians learned too much from the Europeans, who lost then Central Asia 1700 years ago (hunnic invasions) and Anatolia a bit later (turkisk invasion). Religious sicknesses like buddhism, zoroastrism, christianism, have been a huge burden.
Because of that semitic religion, christianism, the european people have been divided into west and east. Beside, the sassanian empire was isolated. India, today, no matter how brown they look, is actually the only place where the ancient european spirit was kept alive. Friendship between India and Russia will play an important role, while China will be friend with the turkish, mongoloid and islamic people.

If you try to think logically. I think it depends on what people understand by the term Europe. Geographically, the majority of the Russian population lives in the European part of the country. If by the term Europe we mean white people whose cultural roots are in Ancient Greece, the Roman Empire and Christianity, then Russia is part of Europe. If Europe is a modern political union, then Russia is not part of Europe. If some people believe that the main thing about belonging to Europe is a set of values (“European values”), then we need to clarify what these values are and whether Russia corresponds to these values and for these people Russia may not be part of Europe. But then I have a question for such people, as far as I understand, “European values” are now usually called democracy, human rights, and so on, but if you take for example the Third Reich, human rights were not very good there, but it was still European state.

NATO is veiled US imperialism, a fall back for the USA so they don't have to take all the blame for the many bombings and destruction of countries (like with NATO's involvement in Libya).
Any country that is part of NATO are privileged slaves, who are aiding in the brutality caused by US imperialism across the globe.
Back in the 2plus4 negotiations NATO made a promise to Russia that they would NOT expand past the Elbe, if Russia would support German reunification.
Russia held their end of the agreement and supported German reunification, but a few years later NATO DOUBLED their membership meeting Russia's borders.
One could make the argument that while these talks were written down, they were not written as legal documents, this however utterly misses the point. The fact that Russia was willing to support German reunification, and get NOTHING in return, shows that 1. NATO'S word means nothing 2. It is very clearly ANTAGONIZATION. Do you seriously think that was not going to piss Russia off?
And if this was not enough, as an insult to injury NATO started flirting with Ukraine about potential membership again antagonizing Russia www.nato.int/cps/en/natohq/topics_37750.htm
Later on Zelensky would also go on to flirt with NATO next when he became ruler of Ukraine, which also fuled the current invasion.
THEN in 2014, the USA COUPED the Ukrainian government, because the president elect had pro Russia leanings, this is when Ukraine had officially became a western puppet state. This BTW would be one of the MAIN reasons why the Donbas wanted to separate from Ukraine, as the USA intervened to dethrone a democratically elected president who just so happened to be less western oriented, which of course the USA hated. This new government would be extra hostile towards Russia.
This was enough for Russia soon after to enter Crimea and take it back with ZERO casualties, not even a shot fired and then had a fair election where the vast majotiy of people voted to join with Russia, because the people there felt alienated by a country that they had little in common with politically (aka because of the coup), historically and linguistically (as Crimea was taken by the Russian empire, where the people spoke Russian), and because (especially at that time) Ukraine was (and is) the poorest country in europe per capita and was also runner up for most corrupt country in europe, but don't take it from me, western sources before the war said the same.
So if we are going to give Russia crap for taking Crimea, we should then be consistent and do the same with Kosovo which is still to this day being illegally occupied (by UN standards) by NATO, despite Kosovo being legally Serbian land and recognised as such by a crap ton of countries and of course Serbia itself, the host country.
TO TOP THAT, NATO then decided to Fund, Arm and Train far right Banderite terrorist groups in Ukraine who would go on to terrorize the people of Donbas FOR YEARS, just further adding to the antagonization of Russia, till they finally had enough.
Russia tried to deal with things diplomatically. Putin even tried to join NATO in the past, he tried FIVE TIMES (but was rejected even though turkey is allowed in nato despite occupying cyprus) just so he would not have to worry/deal with these hostile criminals at their borders.
It is not however in the wests interest to avoid/stop this war, because for one, war is very profitable for the military industrial complex (among other US companies like Blackrock), and they can pathetically try to make themselves look like the good guys by giving resources to Ukraine while also taking Russia down a peg or two, because the USA hate how much influence Russia has with regards to materials like oil and gas, and how much certain countries rely on these materials from Russia.
This conflict is an american pushed proxy war, so that NATO can fight Russia without getting nuked, in that the ukrainians are the victims and cannon fodder for american interests.
This war was pushed by the USA/NATO in order to weaken the Russian military, ISOLATE Russia from europe and because most of the money that has been appropriated to Ukraine security assistance doesnt actually go to Ukraine. It gets invested in American defense manufactoring.
The west for these reasons will NOT ALLOW Ukraine to go for peace talks to end the conflict, as Ukraine and Russia where to have a peace agreement, just for Boris Johnson to come along and TARNISH the entire thing, because Boris like the rest of the USA puppy states, want to fuel the war, even if it means more ukrainian lives are lost.
Just think about this logically, do you really honestly think that arming Ukraine will win them this war? NO, it will only make the war last longer, meaning more and more Ukrainian lives lost. Russia has only sent a SMALL FRACTION of their reserves to fight in ukraine. Just imagine what Russia could do if they had no morals and sent all their reserves? They could take all of ukraine in a few days, but this would result in a huge gigantic GENOCIDE, and Russia wants to avoid this. What Putin instead wants is for Ukraine to stop bending the knee to uncle sam, and TALK LIKE ADULTS and be done with it.
The USA knows they cannot do anything to China, but they can do something to Russia as a lower tier super power with influence in Europe, and the Ukraine war was a great idea to bring Russia down a peg while benefiting at the same time. I mean look at what happened to the NORDSTREAM pipelines.
As a closing, do you remember just how much the USA flipped out the moment Cuba RIGHTFULLY decided to put rockets at their borders facing the USA?
Yet you think Russia would be ok with these NATO criminal SCUM with their track record being near their borders? Let alone Ukraine being part of it, aka the guys who literally hate Russia.
For the record, Cuba and the Soviets put those missiles in Cuba as a backlash to the USA doing THE EXACT SAME THING by placing missiles in Turkey facing the USSR, and because the USA LITERALLY tried to coup the Cuban government
Additionally one could say that while the USA loves to Invade, coup, bomb, steal resources, sanction and fund/arm/train target countries terrorists like they do in the middle east, at least the USA/NATO does not annex land, right?
Well if we where to ignore decades of occupations, then why does the USA fund and support Israel to illegally annex/occupy the SYRIAN Golan Heights, Jerusalem and the west bank?
Why does the USA continue to occupy Cuba's Guantanamo bay? A treaty was made in 1903 for the US to use that bay for naval and coal usage, yet they use it as a off shore lawless prison where people are sent without trial to be tortured for decades. This treaty goes against international law, and Cuba demands the USA to stop occupying their land for criminal use. The USA however ignores these demands and continues to pay Cuba a laughably PATHETIC amount of money to rent the area to which Cuba continues to RIGHTLY reject any of it.
Why does NATO continue to occupy Kosovo even though it is technically not independent by UN standards, because Kosovo's independence was done illegally, as the host country does not recognise it among many other countries.
Why does NATO put up with Turkey illegally occupying Cyprus?

Irrespective of how many Russians they kill and oppress. It is easy to see, how Russia inspired George Orwell to write 1984.
There is an alternative. In that Russians could work to change their society and become a normal European country.
