It was a decent movie. I just watched Anujane Ellis-Taylor in The Supremes At Earl’s All You Can Eat. Here’s a fun fact: Caleb McLaughlin played Ricky Bell in The New Edition Story.
I believe that I would rather see more movies like The Supremes At Earl's All You Can Eat than The Deliverance in terms of positive movies than in my opinion a negative movie that Lee Daniels made here. That's just me.
Hey Sista. Yes I watched The Deliverance the other day & it was based on true events took all the way back in 2011!!! I find this movie very underrated, it wasn’t that bad honestly & the acting was great. Andra Day did a fantastic job in her acting, she used to pissed me off from the beginning but later liking her character in the end & Glenn Close a legend she did a good job too, it sucked she got killed!!! Aunjanue Ellis is a great actress, she killed it her performance as the Apostle I was pissed that she got killed & but she got guts pulling off holy water against the demon!!! Mo’nique she is great actress, even tho she does comedy roles but she’s so good pulling serious roles like this!!! In reality they did destroyed the curse house by bulldozed tractors but it’s disturbing that there’s still strange occurrences happening in that location! Great review Sista♥️
I liked this movie too. The performances were great. It had its issues with the story and not really horror but a good watch. I found it easy to empathize with the characters despite them not always being likable.
All these women absolutely killed their roles! And I agree, when Reverend Bernice showed up to the house alone to perform the deliverance I was like "girrrl where is the rest of the team?!" lol She was so brave to try to do that alone but I think she also felt like she had a score to settle since the first attempted deliverance was a fail. Usually when spaces are haunted, it's about the land and not necessarily what's put on the land, so I am not shocked that their may still be weird things happening at that location.
Apparently the guy from Ghost Adventures purchased the house after doing an episode of the show there and then ended up having the house demolished a couple of years later
I'm glad that you brought up that this film is from the stance of Black American Christianity. That's not something I focused on while watching. I'm not religious so that didn't resonate with me honestly. I agree the actual horror aspects weren't done well. He nailed the drama though.
Yea, I initially didn't consider the Black American Christianity piece until I sat with the ending for a little bit. Then, it all made more sense to me but at first I was like "that was an odd choice" lol
The acting was amazing 👏. The family dynamic was the best part. The "horror" element kinda fell flat to me, it was maybe 20 mins too long but overall was cool. I thought the "demon " was gonna be the mom's inner demons like that Tales from the Hood with David Alan Grier.
I agree, the climax of the film could have been a bit shorter. And it is funny you mentioned Monster from Tales from the Hood because I was thinking the same thing when I watched this movie! I don't know how that would have gone over with audiences, but it would have been an interesting twist for sure
Right! Actors/Actresses are always saying that the set was haunted or something happened. I think that was a good thing for her to do is speak in tongues.
The most crazy weird scenes is that the previous family when the mother was possessed & the way she decapitate her husband’s head off with an ax & starts laughing maniacally was disturbing & the scene with Mo’nique when the boy climbs up the ceiling was freaking creepy😳
Great review. I liked it but i thought it should have been labeled a drama. I also thought the acting was all A+. You're right about the white Mama's who grew up in the culture! So accurate. That said I believed the only demon was the mama and that's probably because of my field of work. But I'm happy she appeared to change, because change can and does happen for a lot of people. I know that iron deficient look well too 😆.
On one hand, I would have liked to see Ebony really confront her Mom about the abuse she endured. But on the other, I'm glad they didn't because they movie was already pretty heavy. It absolutely felt more like a drama but I think Lee Daniels may have been doing the whole "elevated horror" thing, which I am soooooo tired of!
Hey Sista Gurl on Films.🍿 I agree, it wasn't that bad. I believe Lee added other things in there as well. I'm going to try and watch it again for more.
Sounds like Deliverance is in the footsteps of Abby and Lord Shango that also has similar themes around the black church and the supernatural. Both i recommend to you as they are from the blaxploitation era.
I think both lee daniels and monique, although it wasnt her fault, wasted time on not making movies together that they now have a lot to catch up and in daniels case on whether he can get back in form creating a strong movie or past his best. It was a mistake to go with oprah for the butler which i wasnt a fan of, and he had the potential to deliver a run of strong films instead of following oprah and doing TV. In a way he should be up there with spike lee and john singleton who had a good run of films after they burst on the scene before they slowed down. Him doing horror back to back though is kind of interesting. Just hate it when talent gets wasted in an indutry where getting black films on a decent budget scale is difficult to begin with.
I agree with all of this! I'm just glad he did mend things with Monique because he was really hurting his own brand by participating in them folks blackballing that lady! I never saw The Butler but it doesn't get mentioned too often, so I'm assuming it didn't really stick with most audiences. I'm excited to see what Daniels and Monique bring us next. I wonder if Monique plans to step into the director's chair at some point?
@@SistaGurlonFilms Who knows. She could but i think its down to who is willing to give her the money and since she was ostracized by the industry they may not want to give her the power to make her own film. I do know her husband's production company produced The Reading with Daniels and he was ostracized too. I think daniels should return to what he is good at in making a drama film with a strong concept, a strong hook about the community and not a horror film or during his time with oprah making films about the community that always get movies made about them. I guess he figures horror gets greenlit quickly and are cheap to make as well as probably imitating Jordan Peele who has become the most important black film director in the last decade since lee and singleton because like them he has had a strong run of films since his directorial debut and like them focused on a particular genre or style which used several subjects of issues to tackle within the genre they in. Deliverance, Precious and the butler all share a theme about abusive households and a powerless person in that situation that has to also deal with society and the BS they add on top of it but in all the mess they somehow find a way to find their self worth and power.
Yea, that third act was not good. I was really hating the hospital scenes until I read the details about the real story and that scene was pretty accurate to what the hospital staff reported, which is insane!
This was the first open minded review discussion I had seen about this movie thus far.
Thank you for watching! I was really expecting this movie to be terrible based I some reviews I came across.

Oh I heard The Supremes at Earl's...was really good!
@@SistaGurlonFilms You should check it out.
"i can smell your nappy 😺" will live in my brain forever
😂😂😂 Lee Daniels knew what he was doing when he wrote that line

Ooh, I have not seen this movie, but I will now, just based on the cast and your review.
It's really not as bad at social media is trying to make it sound. Let me know what you think after you check it out 😁
Glenn Close does it again!

im watching it tonight so i can come back to watch this but just wanted to comment first 🥰
You're the best! Let me know what you think of it!
@@SistaGurlonFilms it really was the bad! the ending was a LITTLE sloppy and as a horror girlie i wish it was actually scary but its really not bad 😅
Girl i watched that last night that movie there is a lot the ending when she was speaking in tongues that whole scene gave me chills
Right! Actors/Actresses are always saying that the set was haunted or something happened. I think that was a good thing for her to do is speak in tongues.
The scene with her speaking in tongues gave me chills too! It was a very powerful moment
I enjoyed the movie before I even knew it took place in my home town.
The most crazy weird scenes is that the previous family when the mother was possessed & the way she decapitate her husband’s head off with an ax & starts laughing maniacally was disturbing & the scene with Mo’nique when the boy climbs up the ceiling was freaking creepy😳
That flashback was super creepy!!! I don't like being chased, so the mom screaming and running with the axe freaked me out!!!

6:51 the first brand in the film i seen was batman, i was shocked lol
Very true!!! I didn't even consider that logo but you're right!

ok ok!!! Now those sound right up my alley! I don't know if those are on the Blaxploitation watchlist, but they're about to be!

I appreciate the effort but that one line. I couldn’t take it seriously after that. Lee has issues 😂 But all star performances.
That line got people talking about this movie and made people go see what all the fuss was about. It was a risk but it was effective lol
I just wanna perform an exorcism now lol like Come out in the name of Jesus!

Overall, I liked it. But it fell apart during the third act. It was just too goofy.
