I had a hysteroscopy and mirena coil fitted five years ago, declined local anaesthetic for hysteroscopy as didn't really fancy needles in my cervix. Absolutely fine, uncomfortable, undignified but nothing worse than that. Coil is now due for renewal, been to the gp today for swabs and will have a new mirena in a fortnight. not everyone has a horror story but when I was waiting for my first one, all I could find were the bad ones 😢. please don't be put off, having my ears pierced as a kid was worse and definitely , having wisdom teeth out at the dentist was worse
Just to add to this,,, went to have my coil changed, no sign of the threads. This was community gynae clinic, doctor tried a coil extractor with no luck. I am 52 now and he refused to do anything else as the cervix is less easy to dilate as you get older. Got to go back and have a quick scan and local anaesthetic so he can go in and have a good rummage. Not foreseeing any issues, will update when all sorted
Thank you for this. I'm having a Mirena fitting for the first time this afternoon as part of my HRT. Despite going through many procedures and surgeries I am really nervous. Reading this has helped!
Good explanation. This afternoon I had two biopsy’s a camara up and a coil change all at the same time. The pain was terrible would have taken pain relief but I thought it was a regular gyn appointment...
Just had my fitted - pain is far more than moderate for me! Not saying this to scare others, just to make them aware. Internet says mild to moderate pain but ffs this is not mild or moderate.
Same just had one fitted thought it would have been much less pain I got myself a bit worked up though and felt like i was going to faint! I'm like that with blood tests and sudden shocks so that made it worse
@@Estherc91 That woulda been a nice option to have!! "You might feel a little pressure...." Hmmm yeah..."pressure"...try stinging pain?😭 Thank god I'm already prescribes Lyrica and muscle relaxers for chronic pain...I cannot imagine what just getting it done without them woulda been like.

I'm doing research ahead of hopefully having my first one fitted and that's so helpful - thanks for sharing your positive experience!

I got mine on Tuesday it's a bit painful I don't know whether the pain was caused by opening of the cervix
