How To Set Up A Diamond Drag Engraving Bit In Carbide Create and Program This Image of Spider-Man

- A quick tutorial showing how to set up the new tool and create a tool path using Carbide Create. I found this Spider-Man svg online and engrave a scrap piece of aluminum.
When imputing your new tool data, be sure to select a v bit. I set my diameter to .005”. I set my feed rate to 60 ipm. Another important thing to change is your depth per pass. That will most likely be 0. I change it to the same as my max depth .125”.

Thanks again Chris! to the point and all the info i need!
Glad you liked it. Thanks
Yet again, learning online from Chris Powell!
Nicely done, very complex pattern. But great finish.
Surprised the bit had such short spring compression distance. But such complex piece, greater retract height would have longer job cut time.
how did u set it up in carbide motion , probing ,etc
Hi, why did you set material to wood instead of metal/ aluminium?
It doesn’t matter.
@@ChrisPowellFSD thank you Chris!
How do you get past the bitsetter? My spring loaded drag bit will not compress the bitsetter
Easy. I don’t use a bit setter. I use a piece of paper to set z.
I use paper method to zero z also, but I have bitsetter and it wants to use it when starting a job and the spring loaded bit will not compress the bitsetter. I finally just decided to uncheck bitsetter and resend config when using the drag bit.
Stuff like that always seemed like more of a headache than it’s worth to me. I use depth stop collars on all of my bits. That way, I just set z once based on the given material thickness. When I need to change a bit, I just put it in and start running again.
Yes , but I have really enjoyed the bitsetter for tool changes. It has only been an issue for the drag bit. Love your videos btw! Very helpful
What kind of machine and bits do you use. What equipment and tools would I need to start doing this? Thanks
I use a shapeoko xxl cnc router. The bit used is a cheaper 60 degree diamond drag bit from Amazon. You can get a smaller, less expensive machine if this is all you want to do, but if you ever want to be able to do some of the stuff in my other videos, check out the Shapeoko.
Thank you but don’t like the sniffing!
Neither do I, but I’ve learned to live with it.
@@ChrisPowellFSD Well, that’s very brave of you but not nice to listen to in a video.
Yea I get that... I try to edit it out now. Thanks for the feedback.
Will you do the same but in Carveco?
That’s a good idea. I bet it would be better in Carveco because we can do a raster.

Hello - pls tell me what version of CC do you used for this my CC version is Build 316 (2018-7-20) --- it is difference than your - I do not have an SVG file but I have a DXF file - will it works? I do have a SO3 XXL and diamond drag 9- degree bit with 1/4" shank --- pls help me I want to etch on Arcylic for LED display
I hope you got everything working between our messages and the help you got from the Shapeoko group. Let me know if you need anything else.
@@ChrisPowellFSD - Thanks for your help on facebook - I got to update to the newest version of CC from 361 to 423 and I believe I got it to work. I load the gcode in CAMotics to view the simulation and it seemed to be working but I will have to actually carve it on Acrylic with the diamond drag 90 degrees and I am waiting for it to come, just order them last few days. Thanks again - Will make a video to show it to you, Sir. Thanks again
@@walkbehindtrimmer_attachment Any chance you could post something on the feeds and speeds for the acrylic? Just got my acrylic plate and a 90 degree DDB and could use some input so as not to waste too much plexiglass. Ordered all the parts and pieces today to do all of the wiring stuff for acrylic lit signs. Thanks.
@@johnross9369 --- I used the 90 degrees diamond drag bit - Step over=0.005 Depth per pass=0.125 Feed rate =77 RPM= 777 'this does not apply - router or spindle is OFF' --- Plungrate=33 ----- I use Pocket to fill areas that I want to highlight and on the line for areas not need to be highlight ( for example the outline 'No Offset' VS the filled one which I used 'Pocket style'.) Max depth = 0.033 not that much down. I am trying to express but my English is bad - the outline is much faster and created smaller gcodes file verse Pocket take much longer and created huge gcodes file - hope this help - check out my other works facebook.com/artcam.cad.cam
@@walkbehindtrimmer_attachment Thank you, I'll give it a try and hopefully be able to post back a positive reply for the results. One more question, for cutting out pieces from an acrylic panel 3/8 thick, what feeds and speeds for using a 1/8 up cut bit.
Thanks again for the help.
do you think this drag bit will work for a sawmill blade? my mother n law wants a scene of some sort engraved on one she has but I have never used a diamond drag bit nor cut on metal. Just curious.. if maybe you knew?
It should work on anything softer than a diamond, so yes. It should work on the saw blade.
@@ChrisPowellFSD so I’m still new to the game, when setting the cut depth to .125 and max depth .125 and let’s say the thickness of the project was .25 why wouldn’t it try to drag until it’s all the way an 8th of an inch into the project?
@@SpwnDragn you will handily destroy your diamond engraving drag bit if you try to V carve with it to those depths.
@@acerjuglans383 yes I know it would destroy it. Hence my question.
@@SpwnDragn The drag bit is spring loaded. If you had a regular bit installed with those settings, it would plunge to .125, make the cut, and be done since it just cut down to the max depth. With the drag bit installed, it *thinks* it is plunging to .125 but really it is just creating pressure with the spring to push the diamond onto the surface of the stock. It makes the cut in one pass which is really just dragging the bit along the surface, then thinks it is done because, again, it believes it just made a .125 deep cut and that's as deep as it was supposed to go.
Where did you get the spiderman file from. I have a drag bit on order.
I just search for Spider Man line art on google images.
@@ChrisPowellFSD Thanks.
@@ChrisPowellFSD Whenever I load the image and try to do a tool path I get no suitable vectors selected
@@ChrisPowellFSD I am getting no suitable vectors selected. What am I doing wrong?
@@ChrisPowellFSD What version of CC are you using?
His do you set the z the same as a regular bit?
@WebCatTV yes you do but just adjust with the depth of cut
Your video content is great, but the audio needs a lot of help! Can not hear what you are saying half the time. Not jus this one but most of them.
Might be something going on with your speakers if you’re having this issue with most of my videos.
@@ChrisPowellFSD Every one else's does just fine yours fades in and out. Will be fine for a little bit and then if you move it will fade to almost nothing
@@rolandjohnson732 I have watched dozens of videos made by Chris. Never had a problem understanding him. Never had an issue with fading in and out.
Love the video, but Roland and others have a point. At least, what I found is that I had to turn the video volume way up to hear Chris' spoken parts, and when it switched to the music, it was blaring loudly. Did I say great video?!
visual was non existing, i.e. it was blurry 😐👎
The video? Try changing your resolution.
Change your playback resolution in the RUclips settings. When set to play in 4K it is very sharp.
