The alpine cattle drive is still an important event for the farmers today.
Often, they set off for the long march to the alp in the middle of the night.
The three harmonized bells around the animals necks are probably the only instrument in the world played by cows.

It’s wonderful to see that the traditions of probably hundreds of years are still alive and are passed on to the next generations. In case anyone thinks that this is just put on for the tourist trade, it’s absolutely not the case. Bringing the farm animals up to the high pastures once the snow has melted and the new grass is growing allows the farmers grow the crops in the more fertile land. After the harvest, in late August and into September, the animals are brought back down to the farms.
