I like Yugioh as a hobby and i think there is a good chance for decent future price performance, never the less the intrinsic value is 0. Its a speculative market that could go up but also could go down significant. I couldnt stomach more then 5- 10 percent of my portfolio in collectables. At the end everybody needs to find their own sweet spot.

Intrinsic is an interesting word to use, because hobbies are essential. Recreation is subjective in value, but hobbies and games are intrinsic to a significant portion of society. It’s only getting stronger as people fall into their hobbies more and more. But yeah, things can always go sideways in a market for any given reason! I started liquidating my meta cards into etfs as they spike. Re invest in classics.

Yugioh always has had a weird market. Partially Konami's fault. Having 100+ dollar staples and old school out of print cards in a higher rarity that have a cult following is strange

I feel like Yu-Gi-Oh is more complex than most markets because of the high rarity reprints that you mentioned. I tried to come up with a framework I called 'protected rarities' (made a video on this) to explain why certain reprints become more valuable than the original print. That being said, it is very tough to pin down which cards should be more expensive than others.

We’ve been in a cooloff for a while now! It’s not a bad time to be looking into some lovely cards. It’s a weird mix of mentalities these days for sure. I am more of a LP hunter. I want to have the damn card (or an investments worth of them) for a price that I can stomach. You can buy a LP RP01 BLue eyes ultimate for around 40-50, but NM are about double that, and sometimes sell for more. I don’t even want to think about graded price on that. I was buying NM BEUD for about what LPs are now. Just one example of “why would I pay graded prices for a card that I can hold on my hand, in great condition for 1/10 the price”?

I respect that. I recently bought my first pokemon cards in over a decade and the disparity between NM and LP cards is absurd. For some of the cards I bought, LP was $10 and NM was north of $200. I'm sure people just buy the NM ones with the hope that they can grade well as the 10s are going for close to $1000. None of that price structure makes sense to me.

@@Watomarmelon Appreciate the response, your commentary in the background of your videos is always extremely on point, My thought on these ridiculous disparities always comes down to the thought of, “does the near mint/max rarity variant come down in price, or does everything else rise to attempt to meet in the middle? Best example I can think of in yugioh recently is Trishula, I ask, “what’s likely to happen, does the DT Ultra come down? Does the starlight come down, or do the starlights/especially the ultis come up to meet the DT’s”? I think the ulti has a ton of room to grow into the DT ultra, and that may cause the DT to lag in value a bit over time.

Not really into yugioh, more of a MTG player, just collected because my nephew liked it and the anime. Found some 1st LOB, 1st MRL, 1st LOD, 1st LON which I have a complete set in binder+ duplicates, a god set and collector tin sets with cards. For Christmas I gave my nephew 1st edition yugi and kaiba starter decks, for him to play with his son. His son was more into the Pokémon cards I gave his sisters. I told nephew not to open them and gift it on his sons 18th birthday.

Personally i collect ghost rares and i think the premium from psa 9 to 10 is generally warranted considering 9s have light scratches and are easy to find relative to near flawless 10s which you would find to be extremely difficult to find

Yet another interesting discussion. I should pick up some cyberdark impact to try my luck on getting cyberdark dragon. Just made a cyberdark deck and it would look nice to have an ultimate rare one in the deck

Cyberdark ultimates are some of my favorites and I think Korea did a great job with the ultimate foiling on CDIP.

I will take ungraded cards over graded ones in yu gi oh almost 100% of the time. I'd rather have them in my binder over a plastic case unless the cards worth like 2k+

I'm not quite at that point, but I understand where you are coming from. There are a couple of my favorite cards that I want slabbed and the rest belong in binders.

This is fair. I like to build decks of all my best cards where in a case I couldn’t play but I would mind my winged kuriboh ultimate rare cased up my lob first edition would get a 2 grade but I still would like it sealed
