- The AP Bhavan Canteen is situated at the junction of Jaswant Singh Road and Ashok Road. It is not too far from Connaught Place or India Gate. You can easily identify it by the cars parked on both sides of the road and the milling crowds - a rarity in this part of Lutyen's Delhi.
Entry is thru a rotating metal gate, en route to the canteen you will see an Andhra Bank ATM, a Vijaya Milk Parlor and some vendors selling plastic toys, Andhra pickles and other trinkets.
Once you are inside, you are treated to boisterous crowds awaiting their turn to enter the Bhavan on Sundays and fairly decent crowds on other days of the week.
We were fortunate enough (I was there on Friday and Saturday) to be able to walk without much waiting time - Sundays could be easily an hour - for me on Fri/Sat it was all of 5 minutes. Seated efficiently and the plate plonked in front of you with varieties galore, it is a visual spectacle and gastronomic delight.
There are the following in the typical Unlimited Meals offered for Rs.180
a) Sweet
b) Curd
c) Curry-1
d) Curry-2
e) Vegetables-1
f) Vegetables-2 or Green Leafy Vegetables (keera as they call it)
g) Papad (charged if more than one is required)
h) Poori's (unlimited)
i) Pulav
j) Plain Rice (unlimited)
k) Sambhaar
l) Rasam
Plus on the table are always handily available
a) Gongura Pickle
b) Avakaya Mango Pickle
c) Lemon Pickle
d) Dal/Lentil Powder (Pappulu Podi, locally called)
e) Ghee (clarified butter)
Plus incrementally you can also buy
a) Mutton Curry
b) Mutton Fry
c) Chicken Curry
d) Chicken Fry
By the time you maneuver your way thru even half of this thaali, you are filled up like an "anaconda". It is so filling and so delicious that you would want to make one more visit and one more and one more and so on.
