      I prefer the Rode. Thank you for such a thorough review. When you put the mic on the "cheap mic stand," what kind of cable extension did you use to allow the mic to be farther away from the camera, but still plugged into it?

    • @JakeMcHugh

      @Susannah Perri I just use a standard 3.5mm Female to Male Cable. I have one linked in the description under "3.5mm Extension Cable." The Length will depend on your needs, but I find around 10 feet to be a good all around size. I hope this helps!

    Terrific. Clear. Informative. Well organized and easy to follow. I also want to thank you for great advice. As I mentioned in my comment to the first video, you convinced me to get the Movo XR10 for my Canon m50 Mark ii. In this video you convinced me to get a mic stand and a foam cover even for indoor shooting. Again, thank you.

    The Movo while louder, sounds a lot more muffled to me. Not really a fan of it. Indoors the Rode was a clear winner. Outdoors, it’s hard to say. I think a lot of the difference honestly came from your input levels.

    • @JakeMcHugh
      @JakeMcHugh  3 года назад +2

      Good insight. While the input levels were different I made sure that my voice peaked the same around -12dB for consistency in the testing. While it was only a few notches for input levels on my a6400 when outside I think this would make a greater deal to canon users with bad pre amps. Thank you for watching!

    Excellent video! I watched both the original and this one. I think one thing you should do is do the silent test outdoors where you are not talking at. This really allows for the ability to hear what is being picked up from the ambient. I do have one question for you since you are shooting with the a6400. I shoot with the a6500 and I had a serious problem when shooting with the Rode VideoMicro. This problem only occurred when I was remotely controlling my camera with the Sony Imaging Edge app, either from a PC or Smartphone. When in this situation and starting and stopping recording using Sony Imaging Edge, it activated the AGC (Automatic Gain Control) in the camera, so that during moments of silence the audio sensitivity level would go to the max level, causing audio blowout when I started talking again. This does not occur when using the onboard camera controls. Have you had this experience, or do you only use the onboard controls?

    • @JakeMcHugh
      @JakeMcHugh  3 года назад +2

      The Rode tends to sound a little more "airy" compared to the Movo I think since it's Omnidirectional. I think it really depends on what you like better to your ears. Thanks for watching!

      Yeah the components are much better with the Rode but I like the movo slightly more for sound quality. Either way both are amazing for the price. I don’t have a videomic go on me to compare right now, but if it was me I would for sure go with the Videomicro instead! Thanks for watching!

    I'm struggling to figure what setup to use for auto for cars racing. Mic and camera is outside of car. So obviously I have to use a dead cat but I want the best audio I can get without editing the audio. Can I use the movo with the dead cat and actually get the good exhaust sound without the wind noise? Thanks for your content by the way. Impressive 👍

    • @JakeMcHugh
      @JakeMcHugh  3 года назад +1

      Yes, you could get away with the Movo, but I prefer the Rode more when there is concern with wind noise as I like the Deadcat with the Rode much more. Also I find that the Rode gives you a better sound out of camera for more ambient noises and requires less editing with most voices. The Movo is a lot stronger in the lower Frequencies which might create some problems with exhaust sounds and the Rode is more balance overall and less directional giving you better ambient noises. I hope this helps and thanks for the kind words!

    • @JakeMcHugh
      @JakeMcHugh  3 года назад +2

      I personally like the pre amps in Sony cameras so I think you would be well served with either one. I like the components of the Rode better, but the Movo being more directional has it's advantages if you are in more noisier environments. I hope this helps and thanks for watching!

      A trick you could do is use the Rode and have it faced backwards on the camera towards you and then flip it forwards when you want to capture audio on the front side. Otherwise yes the lav would work as well. I hope this helps and thanks for watching!

      @@JakeMcHugh how do you get rid of the hiss in post from the Movo?

    • @JakeMcHugh
      @JakeMcHugh  3 года назад +2

      @iglass_photo Depends on what NLE you are using, but for me when I'm dealing with a good amount of hiss or background noise I export the audio by itself and use Audacity. I would try to find at least 5-10 seconds of the room tone (no dialogue, just complete silence with background noise) highlight it, go under Effects> Noise Reduction> Get Noise Profile. Then Select the whole audio track and again go under Effects> Noise Reduction> Okay. Again, this might not be the best way to go about it, but I have found this to work for me so far. I highly recommend moving forward to have the recording voice hit around -12dB in camera and if you have the time or are doing a sit down shoot to record around 30 seconds of just the room tone in case you need it for noise reduction. I might do a more in depth video on how I record and edit my audio for video in the future, but I hope this helps you for now! Thanks for watching!
