Jean Butler, the original and the best! I can remember being transported watching her dance. And then we also have Micheal's chest and his fast moving feet. It's all a winning combination!
This reminds me of my younger days when as a young soldier and I was in a drunken stupor I tried to impress the younger ladies. When I retired as an older soldier I tried to impress the folks at the geriatric center with my skill as a Riverdancer. I failed miserably.
I was very fortunate to see Riverdance in 1997 and it was one of the most mind blowing, spiritual and energetic performances I've ever seen. Being of Celtic heritage brought me goosebumps indeed. Very powerful!! and we'll never see anything like this ever again!

He's retired now, a gentleman land-owner, chubbier, older... incredibly wealthy, (maybe bad ankles??) watching the next generation of Irish dancers come to the fore, and grow. But in that time... he changed something, forever. And, whether you were Irish or not - all our hearts beat a little faster when he'd take the stage. And for that? He should be proud, very proud...
One senior guy friend who had never been interested in "artsy" things, mostly loves sports, saw the Riverdance video when it was new at a relative's house and cried his eyes out. He bought his own copy and started buying more as gifts for his other non-artsy buddies who all got hooked. I have never seen anything like this. You are so right, this changed culture in a huge way. Step dancing is a popular activity even among kids and adults with no Irish kin.
HOW MANY YEARS LATER AND IT IS ALL SO AMAZING. EVERYONE KEEPS MENTIONS THE LEAD DANCERS BUT COME ON THOSE CORPS DANCERS ARE ON POINT. THEY ARE LIKE AN ARMY.
Has anyone other than me noticed that David Flatley dances with his right shoulder significantly lower than his left, while all the other dancers have their shoulders at the same even height?
