Yes absolutely. I used acrylic but chalk paint would work great. I have also used latex paint because it’s what I had.

Can you super glue the books one on top of the others to make sure they stay?

I have a silhouette cameo machine and I made a vinyl stencil. You can use any letter stencil though. Or letter stamps could work also.

It was a typewriter font. I have a few different ones.

How to paint if book has glossy finish?

You could mod podge fabric over it or depending on the paper or material you could try to scuff it up. If not then dab paint on with a sponge. Let dry and do in layers. I don’t suggest using vinyl as a stencil because it will probably take the paint right off. If possible I would try to get matte or fabric covered books.
