In this video, we dive into one of the most fascinating comparisons of World War II naval warfare: the USS Enterprise and the IJN Shokaku. These two formidable aircraft carriers represented the pinnacle of naval power for their respective nations, the United States and Japan. Both carriers played pivotal roles in the Pacific Theater, but how did they truly stack up against each other in terms of design, firepower, air capabilities, and combat effectiveness?

Which legendary aircraft carrier do YOU think was more impactful in WWII - the USS Enterprise or the IJN Shōkaku?
USS Enterprise
The one that isnt a compilation
The Big E, obviously
The USS Enterprise.
Grey Ghost aka Enterprise
It's a real shame that USS Enterprise was scrapped, rather than being preserved as a museum ship. She absolutely deserved to be saved, not only due to her being one of the most decorated ships in history, but also being the only one of the 3 Yorktown class carriers to survive the war. At least other carriers have carried on this name to preserve her legacy.
I don't often have this opinion because it seems like some people want to save every ship but I think the _Enterprise_ deserved preservation.
They used Metal from CV-6 Enterprise to build CVN-65 Enterprise, which they're using metal from to build CVN-80.
I think the fact we couldn't preserve her was a lesson within itself about how easily we can lose important things.
But I think her legacy lives on, not just in ships that bore her name afterwards, but it pop media such as Star Trek, where every Enterprise lives up to its name, even as other ships join her.
If she were never scrapped, President 47 would have her scrapped for cold, hard cash
There was no purpose or idea for doing this back then, but it would have been awesome if the USS Enterprise had been made into an artificial reef.
"Let us make sure history never forgets the name, Enterprise."
"Fate, protects fools, little children, and ships named Enterprise."
Then they scrapped it.
That's what star trek is for
The US Navy is building another Enterprise. She's the 2nd carrier in the Gerald R Ford class carrier.
The first nuclear power aircraft carrier in the world: U.S.S. Enterprise CNV-65.
If ANY ship deserved to be preserved as a MUSEUM...
It was this USS Enterprise...
its too sad that it got scrapped for parts
@@chaszczekboth ships deserved to be preserved
HMS Warspite, IJN Yukikaze, and KMS Prinz Eugen are also up there
The fact that they are building a Gerald R. Ford class Enterprise is both scary and badass. Scary because everytime an Enterprise comes around there is a major conflict, badass because every Enterprise is an iconic war-hero.
I've persuaded myself into believing that Enterprise would not want to be a museum ship just sitting in harbor, but rather reincarnate into a bigger and better ship every time to roam the high seas
Enterprise deserves a Sabaton hype song
I second that
Yes!
Yes
Wise words!
I will ask them in Hannover because I want a Song about the Enterprise too and I have a VIP Ticket including Backstage Pass for their concert in December
I'm proud that my grandfather served aboard the Enterprise in 5 campaigns in the Pacific during WW2.
Shokaku and zuikaku aka the crane sister were pretty underrated in history, the IJN heavily relied both of those ships and most of the decisive battle were led with the shokaku class. Had they been sunk early the us navy wouldve saved 2 cv along with being able to project air power in Guadalcanal much easily
Yeah they were the best aircraft carriers before Essex class outclassed them. The shokaku class always bested the Yorktown class carriers whenever they fought each other once at coral Sea where they sank the Lexington though I would argue if the Japanese aircraft focused their attack on Yorktown instead of Lexington, Yorktown possibly would have been sunk instead in the coral Sea and wouldn't have been able to be present at midway and then on Santa Cruz where shokaku and zuikaku sank the hornet and both shokaku and zuikaku survived the assault they faced from aircrafts of hornet and enterprise.
@@cluster4583 Lexton was hit by two torpedoes and three bombs, that same amount of damage left Yorktown bordering on the line of sinking at Midway. As Coral Sea as much, much farther from any allied base than Yorktown was from Midway Island historically, it's debatable at best whether the US would have just scuttled Yorktown. Even if they took her under tow, if she didn't just capsize underway, a submarine probably would have finished her off I-168 style.
The Shokakus were actually built at the same time as the Yamatos as another superweapon; while not really “super”, they definitely did inflict considerable damage to the Allies.
Simple history has got to be the best channel for history
Agreed
I agree
Fat electrician is pretty great too
Yes in Thailand have "History world" but this channel is better them

finanlly, the star trek reference i've been looking for
Anything with USS Enterprise is something i will watch hands down
Impressive ships and their histories.
USS Enterprise name has been in 2 previous carriers CV-6 and CVN-65 and will be a 3rd in the future as CVN-80. Interestingly, the metal and steel is passed down from previous carrier to current carrier.
IJN Shokaku's wreck is still in the Philippine Sea and has still not yet been discovered.
Has the zuikaku's wreck been discovered?
@DouglaszillaAwesome
Possibly it was discovered by Scrap-hunters from China and took most of it's parts.
IJN Zuikaku's wreck is in Cape Engaño but there were no discovered sightings and none were confirmed so far.
Also Ugh! Scrap=hunters are such Grave robbers, so much for such a resting place for sailors who died and who served their duties in their ship and homes for the fishes.
(Me looking sadly at Indonesia's Seas and all the illegal salvages of shipwrecks in the area. REMEMBER THEIR NAMES!) 😭
So fun fact. When word of Shokaku’s loss at the Battle of the Philippine Sea got back to Enterprise. The entire crew celebrated.
Legendary match up, love yall who animate and voice over these videos ya'll do great, much appreciated.
The starship seen at the end of Enterprise's video is the Excelsior-class USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-B), commanded by Capt. John Harriman. Right out of spacedock she had to deal with a mystery energy field rampaging through the Solar System. Saving her from this "Nexus" was the last (known) heroic deed of Capt. Harriman's special guest, the legendary Adm. James T. Kirk. 😊
Nope this was not the Enterprse-B because the shown Excelsior Class was not the Retrofit Version like Enterprise B ist was the base model like USS Excelsior NX/NCC-2000 himself
That was the enterprise b @@SaschaDBrickman
@@mikemccolum5832the enterprise-B was a retrofit version of the ship shown.
Enterprise vs Japan. She was reported sunk so many times by the Japanese in 1942 that the crew nicknamed the ship the grey ghost
Also, enterprise rent a car was founded by an enterprise crew member.
It is incredible that either shokaku or zuikaku wreck are yet to be found but nowone searching for them. So sad, they were beautiful ships design
The wreck of Shokaku sits beneath approximately three miles of ocean. We know where she went down, but the remains are a war grave and off-limits to ALL salvage. That might be why she’s never been located.
Scrapping the Enterprise seems rather disgraceful considering how well she served her country. 😟
Well as it said, funding to preserved it was limited, considering how smaller museum ships had funding problems to keep up maintence of the ship, i can't imagine the struggle to keep the funding to keep the enterprise in shap to be museum ship

This video was very compelling, well done Simple History. The exploits of the Big E are worthy of a Sabaton song.
The USS Enterprise (CV 6) probably saved my father and his rear gunner's lives. My father was an SBD pilot on the USS Hornet (CV 8) and flew in combat at the Battle of Santa Cruz. During the battle, his squadron VS-8 was attacking the Japanese carrier Shokaku as the Hornet was being bombed and torpedoed. He hit the Shokaku with a 1000 lb. bomb but unfortunately his squadron was unable to sink it. However, it did put Shokaku out of the war for almost 7 months. During his return to the US fleet, he was attacked by a Zero which severely wounded his rear gunner. He was able to escape but when he sighted the Hornet it was dead in the water, listing, and unable to land planes. Fortunately he was able to find the USS Enterprise but its deck was full of planes. After an initial wave off and with almost empty fuel tanks he finally got the clearance to land. His rear gunner had lost so much blood that as his plane was being pushed aside, an Enterprise plane handler pointed at his SBD and said "Look that plane is bleeding!" His rear gunner spent 6 months in the hospital but survived and lived until 2007. It's so sad that that after the war Admiral Halsey's efforts to raise money to make the Enterprise a museum ship fell short.
Her enemy , the Japanese gave her the name of the GRAY GHOST , because they knew that they had sunk her three times .
Fun fact: Shoukaku class are arguably the fastest carrier of world war II and they have more Horsepower than the Yamato class battleship
Oh that's interesting and remarkable so they had more powerful engines than the super twice as large and heavy Yamato class battleships? that's cool. The soryu class also had some sort of special engines for their turbines right? can't remember what was that special feature of their engines that made them different.
Some might say The Crane Sisters are the first super carriers; purpose built hulls, massive plane capacity, armor and suviveability that would make heavy cruisers blush.
Big E:Shoukaku!!!
Shoukaku:GRAY GHOST!!!!

Ain't that Zui Zui's line?
@@dominicgorriceta6487 yes Zuikaku not Shokaku

It’s inexcusable that she wasn’t saved as a museum/ national monument!
That first night operation changed the designation of the big E from CV-6 to CVN-6, I think it was very sad to scrap that highly decorated war vessel and I'm certain that this decision broke many People's hearts
How i love to learn about the USS Enterprise
The Big E was a legendary ship and most definitely deserved to be preserved as a museum. However, Roddenberry also strongly considered Yorktown before finally deciding upon Enterprise. Also, the vessel you show is a standard Excelsior class. Even the Enterprise-B was an Excelsior Refit. Plus the original Enterprise was a Constitution class vessel, which also received the Constitution Refit; and the Enterprise-A, which also was a Constitution Refit. It has been said the vessel that became the Enterprise-A was the previously named Yorktown in homage to that original choice, but I do not believe it's official cannon. There was never a standard Excelsior class that bore the name Enterprise.
Great video as always; i was hoping for a little animated battle based off the title lol
I'd say Yorktowns are a tad better because of damage control capabilities and safety features.
But when it comes to technical specifications, the Shōkakus are better.
The shokaku class had much better skilled and experienced crews at the start though, and they also always bested the Yorktown class whenever they fought with sinking one of the us carriers while losing none of their own at coral Sea and Santa Cruz eventually they were out of their luck and experienced aviators
Any on paper comparison is mute since we have actual results since the kakus and yorktown actually fought each other in combat, and the kakus came out on top.
-Battle of the Coral Sea: Zuikaku badly damages Yorktown with a single bomb hit, and assists Shokaku in sinking USS Lexington.
-Battle of the Eastern Solomons: Overall US victory, but Shokaku and Zuikaku still got the better of USS Enterprise, crippling her with three bomb hits while avoiding damage themselves.
-Battle of Santa Cruz- Shokaku survives up to 6 bomb hits while remaining operation, and in turn Zuikaku dive bombers and Shokaku torpedo bombers sink USS Hornet, while Shokaku dive bombers cripple Enterprise again.
Please make more pacific war videos this is peak content
Every time I hear about the USS enterprises final days, I don't know why but I just cry every time I hear about it. The like you said, she will never be forgotten. As long as there are Americans, to keep her memories alive. And to tell her storys.
Ijn shukaku, did not deserve her final fate. Sadly enough it was the man who operated her. It's just sad to think that massive creations like that are destroyed over mankind's wants and needs. Take ijn Yamato for example, the world's largest and most powerful battleship ever created. And all she got was a couple major battles, and destroyed. But more than likely all three of these ships I just mentioned will never be forgotten. As long as there are people to tell the stories and helping people remember them. As long as there are history in school they will never be forgotten, they will live on.
Love the video I cannot wait for the next one.❤❤
i think the next "vs" episode should be the battleships, possibly Japan Yamato class, US New York or Colorado class, or Germany Bismark. The decision of course is up to you.
Fun fact: USS Enterprise was a secondary target to Japanese, Henderson Field was a primary target and important for them.
The Japanese spent only less than 10% warheads on US Carriers and rest to the other Fleet in Guadalcanal Campaign.
Big E carried the whole Pacific theater gang 😁
I remember uss enterprise in history channel series
I will never forgive my country for scrapping Enterprise. A ship that went through so much deserved to be a museum. She deserved to be preserved not scrapped.

Could we potentially see a video on the Japanese destroyer Yukikaze, Japan's famed fortune ship, which survived the entire war without being hit by a single bomb, shell, or torpedo, and only lost 6 men in combat.
Love how you used the enterprise C. We really need a series based on that ship.
It is somewhat understandable that not enough financing was found so fast after the tremendously expensive war effort. Took a few years to school and house all GI's. As another note, the Yorktown was going through emergency repair, just 3 or 4 days and nights before the Midway battle and was abandoned too soon after the new damage. It was finally lost to a Japanese sub torpedo, while being occupied again by many of its crew and being towed back to Pearl Harbor. Finally, the "Turkey Shoot" showed the loss by then of Japanese veteran pilots at the same time the American pilots were well trained and had got their superb Hellcats, as well as radar support (vectoring the defenses).
I don't get why this comparison is so popular given that the Yorktowns and Shokakus actually fought each other in combat (and the Shokakus came outon top). It's like asking "which battleship would win, KMS Bismarck or HMS Hood".
Don't forget Enterprise also sank the heavy cruiser Mikuma and crippled the heavy cruiser Mogami at Midway
we need more world war 2 videos
I see Enterprise, i click
its simple really
Why no mention of the shokaku and zuikaku sinking the hornet at santa cruz though? You only mentioned shokaku was damaged in the battle that's it
Hey simple history, can we get a video about the many ships that held the name enterprise and the future carrier carrying on the Big E?
The USS Enterprise was my battle group from 1999-2003.
You left out that a business man was a Veteran and named his rental car business “Enterprise” in honor of the ship. I believe his father or other relative served on her.
An suggestion for a video, if you haven't covered it yet. The U.S.S. Laffey (DD-724) versus the Japanese naval air forces on April 16th, 1945 and became the ship that refused to die.
The Enterprise had a more impressive service record but still impressive how the Japanese were a capable threat in the beginning of the war
I'm part of the welding crew at Newport News Shipbuilding who is working CVN-80 and I can tell you with a fair degree of certainty that she likely will not launch until late this year, at the earliest, or sometime in the first third of 2026 due to a longer than anticipated recovery of supply chains from the 2020 pandemic and the fact that there are/were hang-ups surrounding the scrapping of CVN-65, of which a portion of her steel is to be refurbished and recycled for use on CVN-80.
Call me superstitious if you want, but I unwaveringly believe that recycled steel to be imbued with pieces of the heart and soul of everyone who ever worked on or served aboard the previous iterations of the ship, hopefully being as consummate of professionals as I am, thus giving her a "machine spirit" for lack of a better term. To that end I have been giving and will continue to give 110%, A-plus Valedictorian effort to the construction of CVN-80 in hopes that my contribution to the pot, as it were, makes her that much more resilient to whatever nature or any potential enemies throw at her.
Nah, I like to think that the spirit of the Enterprise has strong holds for her new crew. She is going to show her new crew members that she'll never giving up her fighting spirit even when she is up in space, her legacy will carry on as Earth mightiest protector, that how I see Enterprise, Earth mightiest protector.
Thank you for your service and all your hard work.I believe shipbuilding don't get the same credit as the ship and crew.As a former crewman on the USS EISENHOWER (CVN-69)I 'll be sad to see her go.I know it's impossible to museum a nuclear ship, but I hope they will save enough of one so she can be remembered for years to come.Again thank you,you are appreciated.🎉❤😊
@@kevinpresley3136 It is definitely a thankless job which requires a degree of selflessness to overlook that fact, but nothing matches the satisfaction of seeing a ship that you helped build come home from another tour. If fortune is on my side, I hope to live long enough and have sufficient marbles rolling around in my head to witness CVN-80's retirement.
Thank you for saying what I was already gonna say My friendly welder friend From a ship fitter on the same program. Side note.Did you see that massive unit get put in.
"Let's make sure that history never forgets....the name....Enterprise." - Capt Jean-Luc Picard
The Enterprise was far more destructive to the Japanese navy than entire Commonwealth nations and China navies combined. She destroyed 950 planes , 5 aircraft carriers , 2 battleships etc.
Japan vs USA now best friends
Have you done one in the uss liberty?
Lol
Stop noticing
The Yorktown class did not have an armored flight deck.... No US carrier did until the Midway class I believe. The lack of the armored deck though a drawback also meant repairs could be made quickly. Case and point Yorktown being repaired in a couple days to be available for the battle of midway
It’ll be interesting if you make a video about iranian SWAT known as NOPO

Nice video overall but small correction here: the first japanese vessel that was sunk by the americans in ww2 was a midget submarine that took part in the pearl harbor attack and had infiltrated the harbor.

More like the Yorktowns in general vs. Both Shokakus. From Coral Sea to Leyte Gulf.
The world's first shuttle (NASA) (non-orbital) was called Enterprise, thanks to Trekkie.
my nerd cred needs to do this.
a) that was the Excelsior Class Enterprise B not the original Constitution Class Enterprise.
B) Gene originally wanted to call the hero ship Yorktown he later changed it to Enterprise
either way, I swear that even the slowest carrier in the fleet by 1945 Big E was invincible
A question of understanding: Why did aircraft carriers need cannons in the Pacific during the Second World War? Didn't the greatest danger come from enemy aircraft, which at that time were best fought with machine guns?
One reason was because of the shell the cannon was using. One ammo option for the cannons was the beehive shell which operates on a timer Fuze and was designed to explode and spread shrapnel in the area which could hit aircraft.
@@The_Empowered_Q So the cannons could be used as flak guns? I had almost thought so.
Uss Enterprise was also called the Grey Ghost or the Galloping Ghost of the Oahu Coast
Riveting narrative voice. I could care less the animation is similar to South Park's. I enjoy how the animation content is put together to follow the narration, and I think of South Park; all good stuff! Such a great channel!
As a both fan of Kantai Collection and Azur Lane, I would say that Zuikaku would be angry at Enterprise every time when she saw the Grey Ghost, on the other hand I really hope that Kancolle would add Enterprise in the game despite being Region-locked and exclusive for the Japanese.
