This is legit prime Tony, the best Tony has ever looked against arguably his best opponent (RDA still in his prime here). The crazy thing is he still looks so young here but his next fight was a year later against Kevin Lee and he looked considerably older. And then he kept fighting just once a year until 2020... :(
@@LTD9392slightly is crazy he was clearly on the downside. Much slower, reflexes, spd, timing, everything. He was even declining in the Lee fight, jus wasn't that noticeable.
The 12 fight win streak of the boogeyman is his legacy, doesnt matter how many times he loses now. In his prime he could give any lightweight a horrible time.
@axe12yearsago El Cucuy could've beaten anyone today with the exception of Islam. He'd still give him a hard time until the end. He was completely unpredictable & he knew it. Now, that's scary.
Ive been a fan since I watched the UFC on tape in mid 90s, Ive seen all the greats come and go. Tony will always hold a special place in my MMA heart. I bought every PPV he was in from 2017 or 18 until recently.
He would've beat every lw today except Islam & prob Olives but I see him cooking Olives, keeping it on the feet. Poirier would've also been a tough fight for Tony but he would've beat him too.
The best and worst of Tony here. He was so fluid, so creative, a real terminator and had lasting power that carried past his prime. But he was getting hit with bombs on the regular. This Tony vs 2020 Gaethje would have been a much closer fight but it feels poetic that Gaethje, who unlike Tony, actually revised and refined his fighting style, got that win, unlike Tony who, since he didn't lose during the legendary 12 fight win-streak, never adjusted and walled up his defences even when he became worn down as his career went on.
Prime Tony would've cooked Gaethje, wouldn't had been close. A clearly out of prime version of himself nearly finished a prime Gaethje early in the 2nd, fresh off 2 weight cuts & a heavy grappling camp for Habib. If I'm not mistaken, wasn't the fight also on short-notice?
@@BlueprintGB-gz5qq yea, I forget how short but I think maybe 6 weeks. It was the first Covid Card. Khabib ran off to Russia and got landlocked, so they made it an interim fight between Tony and Gaethje. Also, Tony vs. Cowboy and Pettis should not have been as competitive as they were given where those guys were in their careers and where Tony was in his, those should've been our first signs of his decline.
@@gonzalorocha Pettis fight was Tony's first fight back after injury coming back premature from it, nursing himself apparently too. If u know, Tony simply wasn't the same after losing his mobility. Tony-Cowboy was as clear as day of him declining but still ended up beating the sh outta the last good version of Cowboy.
@BlueprintGB-gz5qq If I recall, he came back after 6 months of doing his own PT, and Cruz was talking about how that's a 9 month minimum recovery since he's had that knee surgery 3xs. Props to Pettis though cause dude was still dangerous (KO'd Wonderboy right after that fight), had Tony going Sonic and rolling away lol. Yea, it was fun while it lasted though. That was such a good fight. Cowboy looked good that first round.

And then he kept fighting just once a year wasting his peak years until 2020... :(
@@crazy4052 It didn't help for sure but Tony did show signs of decline before that. He was just good enough to win despite that. I think along with the double weight cut, was the fact that he overtrained for Khabib. That fight was booked in December and he eventually fought in May. That's 5 months of training for a five round fight when champions usually have 2-3 month training camps. And then there's his inactivity of fighting once a year beyond his control during his mid 30s. So many factors caused a crazy downfall :(
