Super cool to see a performing artist who could play a warehouse rave and showing how he can do an entire set. Excellent episode!
Exactly! There’s not too many of these out there so it was cool to have Pat involved
And that's the way it should be 👽👌 definitely my preferred approach
Agree.
This is exactly how I'm setting up my whole workflow. 100% improvised. For me it's because I just can't get my brain to come back to the same thought after a session. I can't stand the idea of building up a "playlist" for a set. That sounds like torture to me. Major executive dysfunction stuff. But I love just learning the tricks of the tools to just tweak stuff on the fly. It's so much more satisfying to me. Love this vid!
Glad that you’re into this! Thx for watching!
💯 gotta keep it fun 😃
This was, by far, the most helpful video coming across my feed in a long, long time now.... My evolving process of completely-improvised electro music has been progressing at the proverbial snail's pace, and this video and you guys have truly just pushed things very much forward for me! Can't thank you both enough, and big cheers and happy New Year to all y'all 🙏🙏🙏🌌
I’m so glad to hear it! Thanks for watching
Same here. Heard similar stuff from stoors knob twiddlers hangout but everybody does things differently and that's a good thing. I'm also trying to figure out a way to do live improvised techno and videos like this one are gold. Way to go Liam.
This kind of feedback is exactly why we do this sort of thing. Thanks guys, hope to hear your sets soon!
Very cool, indeed! From the philosophy, it reminded me of Surgeon's approach to improvised live techno. If you enjoyed Pat's stuff, check out the videos out there on Surgeon. Interestingly, Surgeon also started using the T-1.
That sequencer looks like a lot of fun.
It really does
Very good video. Lots of great insights. I’d love to see more of these kinds of approaches in your videos. You ask good questions!
Thanks for watching! 😊
I LOVE these types of gear & technique breakdowns!
Appreciate you watching!
Damn, rocking a crowd with only a TR-8s is some true skill and talent
That is a skillll for sure.
Wow, fascinating video! Really interesting to see how dynamic and on the fly that is. This setup feels more like playing an instrument rather than a series of loops and patterns that were made beforehand. Great stuff!
Exactly!! That's exactly what it is - building an instrument.
very interesting, love the torso, more videos about different approaches to improvising please! thank you
Already got a bunch of other artists lined up! We’ll see how it goooeesss!!
I loved this, very informative to see how others build their live sets.
Absolutely! Thx for watching 😊
I’m loving this setups videos with guests. 🎉
I love them tooooo!!
Thanks for this video ! I like the interview style, this setup looks like fun ! Faderfox stuff is awesome.
I've got another one of these in the process of being created :-)
Great video - Thanks Liam - really love seeing how other artists do their thing! - in detail!. More Please! - I not only learned a lot, but it inspired me to make some tracks!
Noted! Thx for watching!
Stoked to hear that 😃
This is the best video that I've ever seen, it's the exact workflow I've been looking for ❤
Awesome! Glad that it's helping you out :-)
Great to see a truly improvised way of doing techno live sets. Would love to know more on sound design during live performance.
Noted!
Such great episode - thanks a million to you both.
Thank you for watching!
🙏😊
Fantastic!! So awesome to see someone's personal process! Need more of this :)
Lots more lined up!
Excellent use of the Mod Dwarf that I totally never thought about! Thank you for sharing!
Always a pleasure :-)
Nice to see other improviser's setups!
Absolutely!
This is great. Gives insight into on the spot Dawless performing to a degree I've never seen before.
Glad to hear it 😊
Awesome! Thx for watching 😊
My guy
Torso is great. Back in the 90s, some people used two MC303 and a dj mixer to go from track to track
Thinking of picking one up myself 😏
A lot to digest here. Quality content my man. Thank you for inviting your homie. I thought you had finally bought a Rytm..Improv is another dimension, excited to experiement with that with Oxi for Techno, ' just enough control'.. lots of learning here. Graci!
I’m still stuck on the TR-8S for now 😏
That's a great machine!@@LiamKillen
You can do it, I believe in you 🙌 thanks for tuning in 🙏
@@stereo_img4595 are you using the single cycle wave forms from the Rytm or third-party?
I am so happy to found this video, my approach is very similar, everything in one pattern and evolved on the fly feels more intuitive than struggle with multiples patterns pre programmed
I was blown away by Pat's approach. Thank you for watching ! :-)
This is a brilliant and very interesting video! Thank you to both of you!
So glad that it's helpful ! Thx for being here :-)
Also, if you're looking for synth community vibes, hit up my Discord ! discord.gg/xj8J2xJuBP
Hey hey great stuff and great explanation! I like the impro and i am building up my setup including also voice and guitar with rc202. Thanks for sharing all this tips!
It’s my pleasure!
That was really insightful! Thanks a lot for sharing your workflow!
Thanks for watching! 🍻
Good stuff!!! I play with the RYTM and MX-12 for years, faderfox and Elektron gear are a great combo :)
The perfect combo
Great stuff, I like the whole format of this video
Thanks for checking it out!
Damn, super cool setup, thanks for sharing all the insights!
Always a pleasure
Great bloody video. I actually watched the whole thing. Aces mate!!!
Awesome! Thanks for watching and glad to help :-)
This video was great. I love to hear about finding spots in the room and how you can manipulate the energy of the crowd with sound and also ways to make DJ/Techo performance more hands-on. The way he controls each aspect of the sounds calls for Roland or someone like that to make a better device! I'll try to do a lot of what he said with the mappable encoders on the MC-707 and see how far I get.
Yeah that’s a major pro tip!!
@@LiamKillen You are good at asking these working DJ/Techno questions. It would be cool to hear to talk to a series of performers who do this type of setup.
Super insightful. Thanks both!
Pleasure!
Wow, this was informative and inspiring - thank you 🙏🏽 Better get jamming extensively with those single patterns!
1 bar is apparently all you need! Lol
Sometimes 1/4 bar is all you need 😅
Like a sourdough starter but for endless delicious musical experimentations 🍞✨
very cool, please make more like this, of people showing their setups
Thanks for watching!
Thqnk you! Loved to see such a competent video diving into detail on this subject and I like the elektron/non elektron approach! I have a similar setup and focus on improvisation, but using an MPC live together with some semi modulars instead. With some practice you can make some surprisingly decent improvised live sets. Especially after realising the q-link knobs can be mapped to do basixally anything!
For those of you who are interested in doing improvised techno: make it enjoyable for yourself, make it easy. Less is more.
Don't fall into the trap of thinking more stnths equals more potential. It is true, but it also means more distractions and less focus.
Your feelings behind the knobs will be translated to the crowd whatever they may be.
Thanks for dropping your set up and really appreciate you watching :-)
as someone one who is slowly moving into DAWless techno, this was a great watch!
awesome seeing the Torso T-1 in action as well, been looking at it, but ended up getting a Korg SQ64 instead as it was better for my wallet.
I have one Elektron device(cycles), and everytime I see something else from them, I want it. Its workflow seems to reward creativity and experimentation.
I want the t-1 now 😏
What a sweet setup!! Such bad ass tunes too. Ok you got a new sub for sure.
Allen and Heath are sweet becuase the interface is built into the mixer which they pretty much innovated, I love Allen & Heath
Thank you!
Yeah they’re on top of the game
Improvised performance is a funny thing. I think ppl think it means to create new ideas on the spot. It’s not really true… at least in live traditional music (blue, jazz, rock). It’s more about substituting in things you know work at the right time. This actually blew my mind years ago when I read it in an interview and learned it to be true… and it really helped me sound better when I hit the stage as I was much more confident in what I was performing. Of course you can do what you want… but thought I’d mention it in case it helps someone.
Thanks for your take on this and thx for watching :-)
Really cool setup! I really like the single cycle waveform's on the tom row. Usually I lose 2 dual OSC voices to bass and lead synth sounds and barely use the tom row or play top loops. Will have to make some samples.
Yeah Pat kills it! Thx for watching!
Glad you caught that detail. It's really useful.
really good insight, thank you for this!
Always a pleasure
Perhaps a stupid question -- how do you have both the Torso T-1 AND Faderfox going Analog Rytm? I'm trying to accomplish this with Digitakt, but Digitakt only has one midi input. So how best to solve that problem?
I’m not sure 100% but the pc 12 has two midi ins + 2 midi outs so it might have something to do with that
A midi merge box is what you need if you want multiple machines going into a single midi input.
So cool! I want to see his live set so bad
He’s great live!
I learned so much watching this.
Thank you for watching!
Super impressive .. cheers to improvisation .. in all its forms! ..
Cheers!
🍻
this is a real nugget!! thanks for the vid and the insights.
My pleasure - thanks for watching.
Amazing amount of ideas covered in this movie! Are there any plans for a series with this kind of content?
I’ve already reached out to a bunch of other artists - we’ll see who bites!
@@LiamKillen looking forward, good luck :)
I like that. I used to play with a Doepfer Drehbank and the Pc12 with about 30 Tracks in Ableton. There is no too much. This was very much fun. And this seems like the same amount of fun to me. Makes me think about starting again... 🙄
Yes! Start again!
Pc12 for the win 🙌
Love your videos! It would be nice if at the end of each interview, there was an extended music session.
I would do that - and this is going to sound pretty lame and content creator-ey to say - but if I include a long performance, most people just won't watch it and it will affect who actually sees this video.
I would recommend checking out Pat's music, linked in the description! :-)
Great stuff! I have a somewhat similar setup but same mindset. I'm using the Torso to sequence three voices in a modular synth, and drums from Ableton. I'm using the Faderfox PC4 to control effects and params in the whole setup but after seeing this I kind of want even more knobs haha. Protip: I opted to set my kick on channel 16 in the Torso, so that I can easily mute it with one hand, while using the other to turn knobs.
Thanks for watching and for the additional pro tip! :-)
That’s a brilliant tip thanks. Been struggling with this today and it never occurred to me to switch things up so could do one handed!
Thanks for sharing this discussion. I got a lot of great info from this. "Its more about more feelibg than more sound." Perfect advice.
Great to see Faderfox pc12 in live jamming. I love mine and highly recommend it. I use it with bitwig and voltage modular 2, and tend towards more ambient and berlin svhool, but many principles of the set-up are identical. Since i do.not use hardware synths, I use the faderfox for the synths, arps and drum sounds, and an akai midiMix for the drum pattern control.
Thanks so much for watching and glad that it helped you out :-)
That was an awesome watch! Please do more “How I Play” vids of hardware set performers like this.
Any chance I could get some more insight on what’s in his mastering chain on the MOD software and/or how it’s dialed in to get a good club master?
Yes! I'm in the process of editing another one right now actually and it's completely different from this one haha.
Awesome, thanks for the reply! either a text answer or a video on how to get a good mastering chain for a hardware set up would be great! I’ve seen the doctron IMC be used (very expensive) and these mod devices are a great alternative for some EQ/Saturation/limiting with stereo ins/outs when not using a DAW/computer. Would have loved to hear a few thoughts on setting that up so like he said your sound can stand up beside DJs who you may be playing alongside at such an event.
Such an addictive groove on this L K !
I know right!?
cool dude, saw him at stereo a couple of times ... even was a regular at his barbershop a few years back
Yeah I’ve gotten some chops from him too! Lol
Great vid, thanks a lot guys!
🍻
Such a beast of a setup. Great concepts tho, I'll try to apply this to Circuit Rhythm and TR-6S setup
Absolutely!
Great vid Liam thanks!
My pleasure!
Nice setup. Would have been nice to hear about the mastering chain. You could actually take just an mc707 and the torso and do almost the same. Ableton Clip thing, eq and multiband compression and limiter on the master out and drum and synth voices with integrated mappable knobs. And faders.
Oh cool thanks for this addition! And thx for watching
True, definitely considered it. I just wish that midi implementation chart was deeper. I feel the same way about the tr8-s.
@stereo_img4595 true the mc is still a bit too wonky regarding midi. I use it but with the internal sequencer. Also the good thing about the rytm is the power of the kick+ distortion. It funny that you are using the rytm + controller almost like a tanzbär
That was sooo helpfull to me. THX
It's a pleasure - thanks for watching :-)
Great video! very inspirational. Q: Where did you get the white/different buttons? that's a really good idea. Are they included with the Faderfox?
That's actually a really good question - i'm not sure.
@@LiamKillen they sell it on the faderfox page faderfox.de/accessories.html
This was great!
Thx for watching!
thnks for this video !! really really interesting ! 1 instrument master, a lot of controls and only 1 pattern for 1 live !! UFO set up but really interesting to get close of total improvisation instead of all the other artists that are 100% prepared live set. Its great to invit artists like him !
Yes! I’ve got some other artists coming in again soon 😊
thanks for these type of videos with the guest explaining their workflow. one suggestion i have is to put their name in the title or at least in the description. and maybe links to some of their websites. thanks again though!
I’ve left links to their website / music in the description + pointed to their social media handle at the beginning of the video 😊
As for including their artist names in the title, I really want these videos to be more about the gear than anything else- because that’s what most of audience would rather focus on!
Thank you for watching!
@@LiamKillen wow i apologise, i dont know how i missed the link in the description. maybe i was looking for "stereo image" not "stereo img". anyways my bad!
Very inspiring stuff
🙏
This is great 🙌❤️
Thanks for watching!
I have the toriaz sp 16 has a lot of the features of the rmx 1000 included which is really nice for transitioning , little menu diving great sequencer but catered more to making loop based songs . Kinda like a sp 404 on adrenaline..
I think it's best to focus on mastering your existing gear, the root reason for constantly trading gear for other gear is probably the individual’s probablm
Yeah 100% I’m in the same boat about mastering gear that you own
💯 the best gear is the ones you know
@stereo_img4595 👍 Agree another things is Discipline, I mean think about it, if the perfect piece of gear that does everything every surfaced will really it be the solution to our problem ?? I highly doubt it..
@@romi2910001That perfect piece is the RMX-1000 😄🤙🌌
Always love your setup 👍🏿how do you like the t-1?
Yeah Pat’s set up is killer in this one!
T-1 is magical ✨🔮
Nice setup and thank you for the video! Is there any way to get more information about the ModDwarf mastering chain? I would be very happy to get more insight into the programmed signal chain.
I don’t know too much about it but maybe it’ll make another appearance on the channel one day 😊
Nah nah, no, you ain't gonna do us like that, we want the extended cut of the ending jam.
😅
Second time watching this… a third is on the horizon… amazing producers… amazing music … clear, simple expert opinion couple with toe-tapping goodness 🙏
Hey I really appreciate you tuning in. All the best in 2024
Interesting setup ✨
My guy stereo IMG kills it
@@LiamKillen dope dope dope 😋
Great video! Many thanks 🙏 but Liam, tell me more about the handhoover 😂 which one is the best for gear? I‘m still a standard befaco handbrush user
I bought a blower from a company called opolar!
He's in good company using the Torso T-1 to drive a set like this. Anthony Childs (AKA Surgeon) too. Declarative Techno is a great way to go for generating material, leaves the performer to concentrate on sound sculpting, arrangement, mixing, effects and transitions. It's a bit more like being a conductor than having to take care of every little detail. Neat idea using the Mod Dwarf for mastering chain. There aren't too many standalone devices to do that, if you don't want to either bring a laptop, or spend really quite a lot on the DOCtron Stimming Instant Mastering Chain. Idk, maybe the newer Analog Heat mk.II can also be useful for that, compared to the Analog Heat mk.I?
Yeah I so want the T-1 now
lmao you and that dust blower 😂 sweet jam my dude :)
I need it!! Lol thx for watching
No external mixer needed ? One of the coolest videos, I’ve watched 🖤 🖤 🖤
Yeah it's all contained in this set up! Insane, right?
@@LiamKillen This is interesting, I’ll try this setup for my next live and see. Thanks for answering so quickly. Peace
Hey Great Vid I’m waiting on a FF MX 12 for my Rytm MK 2. Just wondering what stand was used. Looking for something just like that! Please and thanks for your time!!
Check out KV Gear! They should have what you need.
That Torso T1 sequencer is just massive!! Is there any way you can do this within Ableton (with Push maybe)? The way he just hit that random knob and it looped 4 or 8 beats of that sequence is amazing! I'm always struggling with playing a pattern (synths or claps or just anything, on top of 2 tracks that I'm mixing) that I programmed myself on the spot. It's always a bit cheesy imo, so to have it generated and to be surprised in the moment would be a game changer!
I’m sure there’s a work around to make that happen I’m just really not sure how to do it in Ableton lol
There are max for live sequencers which allow a similar approach to T1. Not exactly of course but euclidean is usually covered.
@@midiscripts yes I was thinking that indeed, using a sequencer and mapping a ‘random’ to a button is definitely an option!
There aren't a lot of things that capture exactly what the t-1 can do, mostly about the interface and ease of use. I have a push 3 SA and have tried a lot of tricks, still haven't found any devices or sets of devices to replace the t-1
super video ☺♥sounds amazing ♦☺☺♪
Super BRO
Thx for watching!
🍻
@liamkillen I’d be very interested in what you would do in a similar workflow with your Oxi One, PC12, Digitakt, Digitone and RMX1000!
Sounds gnarly AF! That’s a complex workflow- something to consider
Sounds like a really solid setup
amazing, u are the first american to play such cool music thank you
I’m Canadian AF
But thanks so much for watching 😊
Free style/impro🤗 seems to be catching on these days.
I think so, and I'm loving the trend. It feels more like "Playing music" instead of "Producing music"
Me likey
Absolutely
Bangin!
Truly! Thanks as always for watching!
Rytm was made for this and beyond, but octatrack it's the king... or any laptop & controller does the same buy and play fun and comfy : )
Yeah- plus laptop + controller is the quickest workflow !
very inspiring stuff. How do you assign one encoder to the decay for both HH & OH though?
You can do that through cc assign on the pc 12! 😊
@@LiamKillen awesome. I'm getting the MX12 this week and thought you could only assign 1 cc value per knob
This is actually a really nuanced question. Unfortunately you can only assign one function per encoder on the pc12. My work around was to map both function to the performance macros and then map the faderfox to the macros. Happy mapping!
very smart workaround, thanks a lot for the tip!@@stereo_img4595
Thank you for the great video. I really would like to listen to some of his sets. Where can I find them?
I listed his Bandcamp in the description
I hear you 😉 I'll make an effort to get something tasty recorded. It's on my to-do list ✅
@@stereo_img4595so there are no sets out there yet? Okay I can stop searching. I‘m really looking foreward to it, beause I‘m so curious how this setup turns out in a longer set. Where would you upload it? RUclips? Soundcloud?
Cool video!
What’s is the stand you are using for the gear?
I think it’s a kv stand? I’m not 100% sure
This one is from a brand called "Headliner" but it is similar to the KV stands too
Cool set up. I am confused how he hooks up the k2 to the black box though. Does it have usb midi?
I’m not 100% sure tbh
I’m really thinking (hard) about the 1010 music Black Box, to pair with my TR8s. I was gonna invest in the T.E. KO ll but I can’t tell you how much the manufacture issues have put me off!
Yeahhhh I understand your take on this
You should have an affiliate link for that tiny vacuum/brush - been trying to find it on Amazon and can't quite match it
I don't thin this model is available anymore but it's the opolar air blower.
@@LiamKillen Even so, this already helped - I was searching for a vacuum, haha. Just ordered a similar model!
Oh, and I also blame you for ordering a Model 1.4 sooo... thanks for that 😂
very cool that he jams everything live, which only works for techno ofcourse
Yeah I love Pat's set up - i've seen him perform live a bunch!
Ambient too!
I guess if one replaces those synths with MIDI controllers and adds a half decent laptop it will be as useable if not more useable. Just map knobs to some VSTs parameters and there won't be any difference, at least the same level of "immediacy" during live performance.
that's absolutely still an option - just a different "intrument" or workflow.
My hero
😂
I think the best sequencer for transitions right now is the Squarp Hapax imho.
What about the Oxi one? 😭
I've been side eyeing both haha 👀
@@LiamKillen if Oxi made it bigger like my 24X32 button grid on my Misa Digital NSC 32 sequencer I would be all over it. Especially if they could keep it under $1200.
So inspiring. Is it possible to do the same setup, but with synakt instead of the rytm?
You could but it wouldn’t be as good IMO 😏
@@LiamKillen
i think its because of the lack on sample using?
The adapter combo on the blackbox looks dangerous
Really? I’ll let him know!
Yeah, strong leverage. I would use a 3.5 to 6.3 mm cable@@LiamKillen
this is cool
Thx for watching!
Finally some real Techno ;P
Yeah this guy’s full techno baby
Can only find 5 vids on RUclips about him. All 5-8y old. Why ???😮
Any links from his music would be nice 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Thx for introduce his way to entertain us 😊
Yeah he focuses pretty much 100 % on live play now and not so much on the online presence.
The way around transitioning is more Elektron devices 😀
Maybe haha
Hahahha definitely! I like to make things needlessly difficult 😅
gold
Techno gold 😏
