*A QUICK NOTE AND APOLOGY:* I really fought myself on if I should use the phrase “my brain is broken” in the video when talking about ADHD for this exact reason. It’s very new to me and I personally want it treated for myself, and my therapist even heavily suggested that I should get it treated with medication. I know medication isn’t the right way to manage ADHD for everyone. Some people can get by on their own. Some people just need therapy. Some people need therapy and medication. Everyone’s different. There is no “fix."
So on that note, apologies if my language made it seem like I think everyone with ADHD has “broken brains.” That was not my intent at all. That’s just how I personally feel about my own brain, and maybe that’s the wrong way to look at it. It's all very new to me. But I do appreciate everyone with ADHD in the comments being incredibly supportive and kind as I navigate this new part of my life. Thank you 💜

Hi! I have ADHD, and I dunno if it helps, but a few really good resources for me have been the RUclips channel "How to ADHD", and additudemag
      Wishing you the best!
Also, knowing you have ADHD is going to help a lot. It's a process, but you'll be able to learn how to work with it, rather than having it work against you. It can be hard, and it'll take time, but it's going to help you in the long run. Learning how ADHD affects you can be scary, but it's also a relief in a lot of ways. You just have to remind yourself that it's not all your fault, and that struggling doesn't make you *insert any negative adjectives you may use here*. It gets easier, it just takes time. You've got this!

I'm sure some people appreciate the apology, but I don't think it was necessary. There is literally nothing wrong with being formulaic, quite the opposite, being formulaic is so often a good thing.
When something is formulaic, it means it's predictable but being predictable also means that something is dependable! And dependability is a great thing, it's a form of stability every heathy human needs! After a long hard day, week or month do you want something strange, unfamiliar, or unknown? No, you want something familiar or formulaic so your brain/body and reset and relax.
You need these beacons of stability otherwise you're liable to go crazy! It's why human need (formulaic) schedules in their lives, they need a stable place to live, and need stable people around them. Being formulaic is the backbone of human society and that's a good thing!
Not only that, but are humans are literally programed to recognize and enjoy formulaic things in media. That was the entire argument behind Campbell's Hero's Journey. He argued that a plethora of stories throughout human history followed the same basic structure that appeals to humans on a biological level. And because these stories appealed to us on this biological level, they were easily understood and enjoyed by humans.
But recently, a lot of creators/storytellers are putting too much focus on making modern media "new" or radically different just for the sake of it. It's likee being new of different is automatically good! Such a philosophy is a direct response to the formulaic and it's missing the entire point of why being formulaic is so important! The formulaic represents dependability and stability in stories and that's a great thing. It lets us understand stories on an intimate level and even lets us identify and analyze differences in the formula when they do emerge.
Like the Hero's Journey is a story structure that has been at work for thousands of years yet I see people calling it "tired" or "boring" or "predicable". They are essentially calling it obsolete but it can't be obsolete when our brains are programed to enjoy it. And you can tell lots of different hero journey stories even when the same fundamental structure is. the same. Same with Scooby Doo, every mystery is different even when the formula is the same.
Look, I'm not trying change, innovation or things that are new are bad. Change can be great and people need to expand their boundaries. All that I am saying is that change, innovation, or the new isn't automatically good just because it's different and we shouldn't act as if being formulaic bad thing and needs to be eliminated. Formulaic-ism is rooted in the human psyche and instead of fighting this fundamental part of our brain, we should be embracing it and using it as a tool to tell and understand stories. That's the best and most efficient way to tell impactful *and* enjoyable stories.

    • @katmhcharis1236
      @katmhcharis1236 3 года назад +1

      *Taking notes*
And it should be noted that the juxtaposition of formula versus innovation can make said changes even more impactful! Or that formulaic stories can form the backbone, but be used to explore more complex and thought provoking ideas! You need a status quo or a formula within your story so it remains internally consistent, (otherwise you’re story is gonna be all over the place) and having aspects of a story be consistent and reliable can be a real source of comfort, which prevents the audience from being to jarred. It’s all about striking the right balance of tried and true and innovative storytelling!

I love that you mentioned that how rewatching a media of comfort, because you already know what happens in the show, gives you a prediction of your feelings, which kind of gives you a bit of control over your mood, which as you said, makes a huge difference when you're going through darker/difficult episodes. I've felt stupidly guilty in the past watching various movies I knew were socially considered dumb, but were the trash I needed at the time, and I have negatively judged myself for watching that trash. So hearing you say that bit gave me some validation. My brain picked that trash for a reason, let me enjoy my trash, haha. And as an aside, A Pup Named Scooby-Doo was a show I enjoyed as a kid too! I don't ever hear it talked about, and while it's not a surprise coming from you, I'm glad you brought it up. Gave me some nostalgia feels x3 I'm glad you seem to be doing better, I hope things settle for you soon, and you can squeeze in some relaxation time :)

Welcome to the ADHD squad. Keep an eye out for autism, it tends to be hanging around out of sight, waiting to pounce.
Joking aside, autism is wildly misunderstood by ADHD online personalities and content creators (as in people who make content about ADHD, not people who have ADHD and also make content) but is co-morbid with ADHD between 30% and 66% of time. It's actually more common in adult diagnosed people because the symptoms of one often compensate or mask the other. I was diagnosed with autism first and then ADHD 5 years later and it was so hard trying to get a handle on one without understanding the other.

I don’t watch any other RUclips videos more than 10 minutes due to my ADD (ADHD’s less fun cousin), but you are engaging, honest and fun, which keeps my brain intrigued. Our brains aren’t flawed, but we do need to be honest with ourselves and find the tools to keep us from being overwhelmed

Then I deleted it due to being self conscious and it causing me to delete it. I have a lot of anxiety myself and a lot of it takes the form of me second guessing and doubting whether or not what I say is the correct thing to say and whether or not I may say the wrong things. But in the end, as much as I struggle to determine what's the right thing to say, I still want you to know that I really respect you and love what you do. When it comes to anxiety, we may struggle with our problems, but in the end we need to push on and hope that due to our efforts that things go right for us

Hang in there, man. I've been binging episodes of MST3K off and on for the last nearly 30 years to deal with depression (~90 minutes to shut off my brain & laugh? Yes, please and thank you!), so I can fully understand the need to retreat into something familiar for a while. I say do what you have to do - occasionally you just have to sit on the couch and do 'nothing'.
Mental issues can feel like a constant battle. Fighting to get from one day to the next, sometimes from one hour to the next. Sometimes just from one breath to the next, and it can be exhausting. But even Sun Tzu knew that at times the best tactic is to retreat, to regroup, to rest. Stepping back is not failure, it's strategy. And when you've had your rest, and it's time to get up off the couch and take some action, you're a lot better equipped (even if only for a a moment, but often a moment is all you need) to make yourself stand up and get back into the fray.
That's all. Love your videos. thank you for doing what you do.

I'm from a spanish speaking country, I didn't have friends when I grew up expect for my lil bro, we watched pup after school and on weekends mornings. I know full well I enjoyed it a lil bit more, I was the one looking out for pup time and we always stopped what we were doing to watch it together.
