For any artist to discover new inspiration after many years is a huge challenge yet this is just what Steeleye Span achieved with Wintersmith, the 22nd studio album in a remarkable career. Born from their friendship with author Terry Pratchett, their musical interpretation of his novel provided them with a gateway to a magical world, allowing the band to explore familiar themes in the company of a new set of characters - all of whom allow Steeleye to delve into the darker side of their music.
Received warmly by both critics and audience - Wintersmith saw Steeleye return to the UK album charts - the resulting concert tour was a celebration of both the past and the present. With violinist Peter Knight making his farewell, these live shows marked a major chapter in the band’s history. Filmed in Salisbury, the Wintersmith DVD captures all the magic - especially fitting as Pratchett was in the audience and joined them on stage. This is the perfect record of a special meeting of minds.

I've just read Terry Pratchett's biography by his personal assistant, Rob Wilkins, in it, Wilkins says that in Sir Terry's last days Maddy visited him and sang 'Thomas the Rhymer' for him. What a wonderful thing to do.
Oh, would that be connected with the Dark Morris dance in one of the Discworld books?
Oh god ....... weeping now.
Yes.@@suebursztynski2530
@suebursztynski2530 yes.
What a great gift our musicians have given us. I'm 76 and was listening to Steeleye Span 55 years ago. My generation got lucky with all the great music.
Maddy still sounds bloody brilliant! English music at it's finest!
Rest in peace Sir Terry Pratchett may you always be remembered with smiles. Crivens!

Fantastic band, something the UK should be proud of.
Not an hour ago I finished reading "Wintersmith" for the third or fourth time. Which led me as usual to Morris dancing on RUclips, which led me to this, which I'd never heard before. Synchronicity! Also: wow!!
They have an entire Wintersmith album!
love this, just read Wintersmith 2.. i am in tears, and now this, and also with STP warning not to dance this in school shows... girlis, watch, don't doo this dance,,, leave it tio Summer Lady

What a voice she has 💜. I love this song.
She's a lovely person too. Her voice, so rich. And what a song!! I don't know whose idea it was for Steeleye to write an album about Wintersmith, but it was genius.
Rock On Steeleyes! Gods know we could really use some of this in Texas!
We've got the pc brigade trying to get it banned because somehow the blackened faces are racist
Always dancing the dark morris it's much more fun!
Just finished reading wintersmyth and found this, brilliant!! We should all do the dark Morris, black faces and all.
awesome, but scary..i prefer regular Morris... bels an all

I think Wintersmith was their best album in this century. And I _like_ their other albums!
Great stuff what an awesome gitar riff and performance . Steeleye span still rocking hard after all these years!

Sir Terry Pratchett will be regaling Them with wondrous stories while Steeleye Span play the music. That is one lucky bunch of Dark Gods.

Some parts of this remind me of 1980's Jethro Tull.
(Yes, I'm aware of Ian Anderson's work with Steeleye in the 70's)
Always FABULOUS!
Sounds like a Jefferson Airplane - Black Sabbath mash-up. Stunning! They know how to rock, Maddy singing at her best. Vocal harmonies superb. Playing this over and over. Addictive :-) Come back to Sligo, I missed you, did not know you was on, nor did my friends.
Fantastic folk metal

Who are the Morris Dancers in this album?
How did they get a wizard for the drums?
Applied to the Unseen University, where else?
@@joannagodfrey5111 My thoughts exactly.
Now we know what Mustrum Ridcully gets up to on his days off 😆!
Is it the Stick and Bucket Dance that they're doing
No, it's the expurgated version of the Dark Morris. Very well done too, with a balanced set of dancers :)
@@MuttleyMutter I knew perfectly well that it was the Dark Morris, however, the Stick & Bucket dance appears in another of Terry's books about Tiffany Aching, so it seemed entirely appropriate. I am really waiting for some scholar (perhaps from the Unseen University) to come up with the words and tune to the Hedgehog Song
Lol I get it
No, no one's ever to bring up the Stick and Bucket dance again!

How very pleasant it is that none of the Snowflakes have as yet come across this video so we can enjoy it in the spirit it should be seen and heard, and with the memory of Sir Terry in our minds. I think the dancers are excellent and fully as I imagine them from the book
Speaking as one of said snowflakes, you couldn't be more of a strawman-building jackass if you tried. Quite a few "snoflakes" generally like Sir Terry's work, and what he was about as a person.
Strange that they had to write about a dance that is performed in silence.
Where did they get the Justin Trudeau tribute dance troupe from ?
i'm just happy that no one is screaming: "blackface" for no fucking reason, for once.
Nice song by the way, i find old people stylish and the rythm is pretty good.
You do realise that the only ones screaming this are you and the 2 other people trying to shoehorn their political views into this? Blackface is about white people using make up in an effort to imitate Africans' racial stereotypes. Where in this video do you see that happening? I don't see it either because as you can deduce from the song's lyrics and explanation, aka 'context', that is not why anyone in this video is using make up. At all. So why bring it up?
Anyone foolish enough to cry blackface when witnessing the dark Morris is probably going to get a very personal visit from the Wintersmith
"Can't ya see? You're not makin' morris dancin' better, you're just makin' folk-rock worse!" -- Hank O' the Hill
Jesus God are you changing camera angles quick enough? This isn't a slipknot video let's see the freaking show
Love dem "black" boys. Well done, Steeleye, for kicking stupid PC right up the arse.
Michael Igoe I completely agree!
Pretty sure thats not why they're doing it
Political correctness be buggered..that lady Morris Dancer is just very attractive...
"lady" morris dancer is certainly not traditional ... Political Correctness has already changed that former exclusion :)
@@Qkano
Actually, historically there have been female morris dancers - especially in the NW. But some of the morris revival organisations either didn't know this or chose to ignore it and until recently had a men only policy.
And, as of 2024 there are more 'morris women' than 'morris men' (a modern term by the way).
@@YorkyOne 400y ago? Really?
OK ... if you say so ... just not mentioned in anything I've read back to early 19th century.
@@Qkano
Of course it is rare prior to the 19th century but Will Kemp whilst morris dancing from London to Norwich in 1600 was asked by a young maid if she could dance with him - wanting to 'have the olde fashion, with napkins on her arms' (rather than new fangled handkerchiefs).
And there are possible sightings in the 1600's.
Fuckin heavy!!! To bad ya can’t do black face anymore lol
Black face?
When there's lot going on on stage we don't need close ups of individuals, very badly filmed.
I’m only surprised someone hasn’t started moaning about “black face” 🙄
I don't think they are allowed to black up anymore. Sure it's banned. Another chipping away at our culture
@@julieobrien8252The Dark Morris is alive and well and still in blackface for the original reason.
@@SteveW139 good to know. Thank you and long may it continue
@@julieobrien8252
Blacking up isn't banned as such.
But organisations such as the Morris Ring have deemed it a sensitive matter and if you want to be a member you must desist from engaging in the practice.
But any other colour combination is fine.
@@YorkyOne thank you for clarification
Morris men should be men
'Morris men' is a modern term - but historically there have been 'morris women'.
