In todays NFL there are now 3 types of starting QBs. 1, the franchise cornerstone where they spend 90% of their career with one team. 2, the journeyman QB, who's usually on move from on team to the next and is the backup or a spot starter. And 3, the category that Cousins falls into. The private contractor. They will give a team stability at the position, win the games they're expected to, and usually can be relied to make smart decisions with little mistakes. But here's the catch, all of these "services" will come with a premium price tag. With a disclaimer of no guarantee of a Super Bowl appearance. This is what the Atlanta Falcons are now finding out about Kirk Cousins.
I’d say the bridge QB is who the journey man is in sense get us some wins help mentor and make the transition smooth from the vet to the rookie these types have been the norm for some time now though it is more common to expect a Rookie to be the cornerstone immediately these roles have always been there
Some People owe the Falcons front office an apology. They over paid a little bit for their QB room, but better safe than sorry. Especially at that position. Still, I wouldn’t have given Kirk 100 million guaranteed.
@@Cambo14 it’s the fact that Kirk was coming off of an achilles injury. I feel like they could’ve gotten him or someone comparable to him for less. Plus it would’ve been easier to move off of Kirk if he had less guaranteed
Maybe i'm little biased cause Michael is my guy, huge fan of him here. I don't know when but i know for sure that sooner or later,Michael is gonna be the franchise quarterback for the Atlanta Falcons. Great qb,with the strongest arm from the past draft and also very accurate. Falcons pick Michael in the draft, was the right decision for their future, their fault was the big contract to give to Kirk at 36 after coming back from ACL.
Actually Achilles tendon rupture. The teams in the draft that picked a QB with 50 or more starts in college probably have a "keeper"! Penix carried his team to the championship game last college. I think he's the most pro ready in any system in the last draft.

Im not a Falcons fan but I am a big time football fan. I think the Falcons were on point to pay Cousins who is a NFL caliber starting QB (who is in the very final years of his career) and to draft Penix to sit in the wings and learn the ropes of the NFL behind a pro with a lot of experience. Much like the Packers did with Love. No matter how Penix looked in practice and pre-season, It IS NOT the same once NFL teams actually game plan specifically for what teams know you can and can not do well. I think this is what happened. The Falcons wanted Kirk for this season, but with Kirk's agent not budging off that high contract the Falcons got a bad feeling. They could be bamboozled completely by Kirk and absolutely needed a contingency.

To be fair, it looks like they are doing what Carolina should have done with Bryce Young last year, only they didn't go out and overpay a vet QB with expectations that he would be anything other than Kirk Cousins. The modern way of wanting to throw rookies into the fire in week 1 has shown to be a failure more often than not as opposed to allowing them to learn from the bench. The example of the Panthers again, the team would have been far better off letting Andy Dalton play because he could have at least avoided the majority of the rookie mistakes that Bryce made and possibly squeaked out another win or two (at least enough to bump CHI out of the first draft space so losing the pick hurt just a tad less), and then let Bryce give it a go towards the end. I hate retconning things through hindsight, but I wonder with how he played against GB if he could have really lit it up for the last 6-7 games of the season altogether if he'd sat for the first 10-11.
