Love your posts Bobby. I learn a lot from you, keep up the great work. Quick question - why do you need a nesting box when you have those amazing kindling totes?
We don’t need nesting boxes unless all our kindling totes are taken. Once the kits are 10 days old we remove them to a seperate cage with mama. we’ll use a nesting box for about another week to give the litter a place to cluster. This helps the rabbits stay comfortable and contained for easy inspection for the next 4 weeks until we start weaning them. thanks for asking!

Nesting boxes still work. By surrounding your nesting box with straw and installing hardware cloth around the lower walls of your cage that will help greatly. The majority of your kits should be fine. If you can build drop down cages that might be a a better option too.
I wouldn’t recommend this nesting box for new born rabbits because they’re blind for the first 10 days and will get pulled out of the cluster. This nesting box is for 14 days and older
@@TheRabbitryCenter thanks for the guidance. So you think a nesting box with a higher lip would keep them from getting dragged out while nursing? great content, where i am there is not freezing but the little bunnies' get killed by mother stepping on them. i made the cages bigger and also the nesting box bigger. but they still got killed and 2 of the rabbits are unable to walk. any advice.
I'm sorry to hear that. I'd re-breed mom and give her another chance see if things turn around. Sounds like you made a spacious cage and nesting box. Your nesting box should allow a couple inches of clearance on each side that should suffice your cages should be no less than .5 ft.² per pound of rabbit. 5sqft

I like the concept of the nest box but why do you put the wire in the bottom if you put paper with pine shavings and hay? I understood it's there to let pee and poop go through but that's not going to happen with all the other stuff in the box. So I was just wondering why bother with the wire.
If you don't have the wire all the bacteria collects in the bottom of the box. With a cage floor the shavings soften the paper, the paper gets torn to small bits, it all falls through after about 4-5 days and by then you want a clean nest anyway so at that point you simply make a new nest with paper shavings and straw. All the paper does is buy you some time. Without it the shaving and hay are gone the next day. At four weeks I remove the box and put in a small hide. Mama can get away and close down the milk bar when she wants.
Can I get some clarification please? So if you are not using the tote system, do you use the nest box with the short lip from the get-go? So she kindles in it? Or do you have her kindle in a box more enclosed, and then move them to the one with the short lip after a week or two? Thank you
I wouldn’t use this nesting box before your rabbits reach 14 days old Use a traditional nesting box like the one below amzn.to/35LcbMG You can also simply turn your nesting box on its side once the rabbits start hopping out of the nesting box This video shares more ruclips.net/video/6f4VWg9CS0A/видео.html
I have found your videos extremely helpful! Thank you! I was wondering, why not just attach the screen to the bottom of the box as opposed to having a lip on the inside? Wouldn't this help to prevent urine and feces buildup?
The kits are so small- there’s very little urine and feces and it gets swapped out with fresh shavings and straw at 14 days old and then removed 1-2weeks later.
All of my bunnies have been jumping out of the nest at 14 days. They opened their eyes and keep trying to chase momma around. Should I swap to this as soon as I can't keep them in?
Good evening Bobby, I breed my rabbits for the first time today. Had good fall off so hopefully I have babies soon. The nesting box you just shown with the very shallow side. Is that to be used from birth on or only when they get bigger? Thanks for your input. Have a wonderful day

@@jaket8947 if you can find it use it although I’ve never had a problem with 16 gauge half inch by 1 inch flooring most important thing is not to over feed feed the rabbits which will cause stress on the hocks. Where do you buy 14 gauge half inch by 1 inch?
@@TheRabbitryCenter that’s what I use because I was given a five slot nest box with those in there already. I cut a thin board with holes drilled for ventilation and to let urine escape and so far it’s worked great. Of course I put nesting material on top of it. It’s very easy for babies to go in and out. I’m in the southeast so it’s warmer here. We have raccoons as well but it hasn’t been a problem yet. The cage is on the bedroom side of the property so hopefully we will hear intruders plus a good LGD doesn’t hurt.
I will say all of the info I got from you has been great except this box. I’ve tried it three times now and it’s a miss for us. Don’t know if you aren’t suggesting letting them give birth in these?
I'm so sorry you had trouble. These are not birth boxes or intended to replace a traditional nesting box system. These are Day 10 boxes to mimic a nesting box on its side at two weeks. (We turn our nesting boxes on their side at 2weeks so the kits can come and go as they please) Only after gathering the kits from the kindling totes on day 10, do we use these. They're specifically to be used with our kindling totes. That way they can make their way in and out of the nesting box ( in their new grow out cage) and not get trapped outside of the cluster and freeze. Hope that helps.
@@Woodflooralchemist I'm terribly sorry for the confusion in the video I'm referring to our kindling tote system. I'm going to change the title and thumbnail pic to avoid this going forward.
The small baby rabbits manure is small the size of BBs they’re not really a problem because the newspaper will only last 3 to 4 days before ripping up into little pieces then I will clean the nesting box replace with another sheet of paper and shavings A few more days later they will have enough fur that I can start using straw for bedding and no more paper and shavings In the summertime I use very little due to the heat
I’m sorry to hear that. It can happen in cold temps. I recommend using our kindling totes in cold or hot temps Here’s a video sharing more ruclips.net/video/XsugHQxiGRA/видео.html
Hi Bobby, great video! I built our nesting boxes similar to yours! : )) I have a problem, maybe you can help me out. We got 2 does and 1 buck about 6 weeks ago (first time). The one doe isn't interested in breeding at all. She runs in circles around the buck and even jumps over him. With the other doe, everything went fine, the breeding seemed successful, there were 3 fall-offs. She started building a nest about 3 weeks into pregnancy, and then...she didn't give birth. It's now day 37, I guess it would be more than optimistic to still hope for kits. I just don't understand why she built that beautiful huge nest, she pulled so much hair, I could fill a pillow with it! Do you have any experience with this behavior? And of course with the behavior of the other doe.
Did you check in the nest and make sure there aren’t kits under all that hair, for the one who took. Maybe try his breeding the stubborn doe videos for help with the other one.
I’d rebreed the doe that had the false litter today . She’ll think she’s pregnant due to the breeding but sometimes it doesn’t take. Be sure to have your buck only breed one doe every other day to make sure his fertility has a high count
@@TheRabbitryCenter So it's common for a doe to build a nest though not pregnant.. I rebred her already. Fingers crossed! The other one is still the same. I tried everything you explain in your videos. Thanks for the answer!
If it's the rabbit's first litter, she only has one or two kittens and not understanding what is happening, she may eat them by accident when trying to remove the sack. I usually tried to have three rabbits giving birth at the same time so I could distribute the number of kittens between them. When introducing a new kitten, I would rub it into the fur of the adopting mother so it would smell right.
Contrary to popular belief rabbits remain active and thrive outside in the cold. Rabbits are covered in fur and are built to survive very cold temperatures. Temperatures 40-55F are perfect but rabbits remain comfortable as low as -30F.
To clarify this nesting box is only for those that use our kindling tote system. Day10: At this point they’ve already consumed Cecotropes in the kindling tote before their eyes have even opened. We move them on day 10 and only at that point do we implement this box. This way they can come and go as they please, in and out of this short nesting box
Jeff Lake good question -the paper helps the straw stay in the cage for 3-4 days. Without the paper a majority of the straw would be gone the next day. You only need to add straw a couple times and about a week later the kits are little bunnies who don’t need the straw any more
I hear you it is a little weird I try to mix it up I still use the original intro sometimes That’s a little country intro I wrote years ago so I’m glad you like it I appreciate the feed back
@@TheRabbitryCenter Np, it's very tranquil and fits well as an intro. Having the same song for an intro gives the vids a sense of familiarity, like you kno what you're in for. It's like a pavolovian response, or a ritual to let people know their in for a comfy vid about rabuts.

@@TheRabbitryCenter I use 14g for the bottoms, seems to do better for their feet.
@@jaket8947 if you can find it use it although I’ve never had a problem with 16 gauge half inch by 1 inch flooring most important thing is not to over feed feed the rabbits which will cause stress on the hocks.
Where do you buy 14 gauge half inch by 1 inch?
Have you ever used drop down nest boxes built into the cage? All wire.
I haven’t used them mostly because my hutch is outside with a herd of raccoons that frequent the area but I’ve heard good things about them
@@TheRabbitryCenter that’s what I use because I was given a five slot nest box with those in there already.
(We turn our nesting boxes on their side at 2weeks so the kits can come and go as they please)
Only after gathering the kits from the kindling totes on day 10, do we use these. They're specifically to be used with our kindling totes. That way they can make their way in and out of the nesting box ( in their new grow out cage) and not get trapped outside of the cluster and freeze. Hope that helps.
You specifically say using this box will avoid loosing rabbit on the wire. So I guess I was confused.
@@Woodflooralchemist I'm terribly sorry for the confusion in the video I'm referring to our kindling tote system.
I'm going to change the title and thumbnail pic to avoid this going forward.
Ok I see the combo of the two. Np. I still walk away with experience and greatly appreciate your content.

What’s up -thanks for watching
@@TheRabbitryCenter Thanks
How will the poop fall out with newspaper in there? Won't the poop stay inside?
The small baby rabbits manure is small the size of BBs they’re not really a problem because the newspaper will only last 3 to 4 days before ripping up into little pieces then I will clean the nesting box replace with another sheet of paper and shavings A few more days later they will have enough fur that I can start using straw for bedding and no more paper and shavings
In the summertime I use very little due to the heat
👍🤟
I had 2 kits that froze to death inside the nesting box.
I’m sorry to hear that. It can happen in cold temps. I recommend using our kindling totes in cold or hot temps
Here’s a video sharing more

Hi Bobby, great video! I built our nesting boxes similar to yours! : ))
I have a problem, maybe you can help me out.
@@tatianawolf1253 I checked it, nothing.
I've never used a nesting box I always let the rabbit make her own
Do they have them on the wire? If you don't use a nesting box where do they make a nest at? Colony Raising?
@@TheRabbitryCenter I have homemade cages with wood bottoms and I always have straw for bedding
How do they not freeze
Contrary to popular belief rabbits remain active and thrive outside in the cold. Rabbits are covered in fur and are built to survive very cold temperatures. Temperatures 40-55F are perfect but rabbits remain comfortable as low as -30F.
What about the cecotropes?
To clarify this nesting box is only for those that use our kindling tote system.
Day10:
At this point they’ve already consumed Cecotropes in the kindling tote before their eyes have even opened. We move them on day 10 and only at that point do we implement this box. This way they can come and go as they please, in and out of this short nesting box
@@TheRabbitryCenter i see. Thanks for responding.
hi sir
Do this nesting box can be used regardless of breed?
If not then what are your recommendations?
Medium and small breeds
How do you get a black eye New Zealand rabbit?
Mix your purebred rabbits blue and red make chestnut /chestnut and white will have a variety
Doesn't the paper and straw on top of the floor defeat the purpose of the wire floor? How often do you clean out that bedding material?
Jeff Lake good question -the paper helps the straw stay in the cage for 3-4 days. Without the paper a majority of the straw would be gone the next day.
You only need to add straw a couple times and about a week later the kits are little bunnies who don’t need the straw any more
Good vid, but I really liked your old simple guitar intro. There doesn't seem to eb a consistent one now, and this one was just weird.
I hear you it is a little weird I try to mix it up
I still use the original intro sometimes
That’s a little country intro I wrote years ago so I’m glad you like it I appreciate the feed back
@@TheRabbitryCenter Np, it's very tranquil and fits well as an intro. Having the same song for an intro gives the vids a sense of familiarity, like you kno what you're in for. It's like a pavolovian response, or a ritual to let people know their in for a comfy vid about rabuts.
What size for a Flemish giant rabbits
I haven't raised giants so I couldn't tell you for sure
Hello Sir I'm Febie from the Philippines if you need a worker in your farm..I am available anytime for interview. I am currently working in my own small backyard rabbitry which I had started only last year when pandemic is started .I'm inspired for what you are posting in your blog regarding Rabbitry that is why I get interest more to work in your farm .
I’m so glad you like the content. Thank you Febie for commenting!
would you or do you sell these? a set for 2 does.
We don’t sell them the dimensions are on the video to help you build them
I wonder, if the designs can be tweaked a little bit, so you can use a nesting box, flipped upside down, as a hide box?
I’ve used hide boxes as nesting boxes-yea I don’t see why not- thanks for commenting
Our cages have drop down nest boxes. What is your take on them?
I haven't used them but have heard good things. If they're outside I'd be concerned about how low they drop down. I wouldn't want a predator to get their claws threw the cage. If they were in a barn or shed I wouldn't be worried. They'll work great.
I use drop down nesting boxes and I love them. I’ll never use any other way.
@@TheRabbitryCenter thanks your videos are a big help
You should sell them lol
Everyone should! Go for it and put some money in your pocket!
