    hello sir, If I may ask, how long did you soak the twinkies/oreo in LN2? because I assume that 0:58-1:00 is a cut.. and if you felt a little pain in your mouth and lips when you ate them.. thank you sir.. :)

    • @BealsScience
      @BealsScience  7 лет назад +1

      I leave the snack foods in for about 30 seconds (minimum) before biting into them, sometimes as much as several minutes. Usually when I do this demonstration for schools or groups, I am telling a story as I go along ("I used to be a dragon trainer and because dragon's breath so much fire, you have to give them snacks to cool them down....(something along these lines)....") While I tell the story, the foods soak up and freeze.
      Pain? Not much pain but after chewing up several frozen snack foods it can make your tongue (and lips if your not careful) a little uncomfortable. This is due to the outermost layers of skin freezing (it doesn't matter how careful you are, wet skin and -320F liquid don't interact well) but the effects wear off quickly and I have never had any more complications than a very small amount of discomfort - anything for science, right?!

    Our school tried this, and I'm curious if there is any health risks of doing this?

    • @BealsScience
      @BealsScience  8 лет назад +2

      there are risks from the temperature but not from the Nitrogen. The cold food could freeze your tongue or parts of your mouth if you are not careful (similar to if you were to stick your tongue to a metal sign post on a freezing day) but as long as you don't let the food sit in one spot it shouldn't freeze your skin and cause damage - I would NEVER allow children to do this, because of this reason.
      The nitrogen is virtually harmless because it is in inert gas and you are breathing it all of the time anyway. However, if you inhaled only nitrogen gas for a period of time you would not be intaking enough oxygen and...well...without oxygen you will pass out!
      So, it is cool that you got to try this but always exercise caution!!

    • @BealsScience
      @BealsScience  8 лет назад

      nate123450 good question. The safest thing is to not try this at home. But, if you do, don't swallow any of the food until it has warmed up and the nitrogen has vaporized!

    where can i get this liquid nitrogen?

    • @BealsScience
      @BealsScience  8 лет назад +2

      Where to buy liquid nitrogen?
      Liquid nitrogen can be purchased at an industrial gas supplier or medical gas supplier. You may have to do some searching in your area but these suppliers usually carry oxygen gas for medical use, acetylene gas for welding and liquid nitrogen for medical and agricultural uses. The container you need to carry liquid nitrogen is called a Dewar which are quite expensive. Most places will not sell you liquid nitrogen if you don't have a Dewar although some suppliers will rent or loan you one. More info and links to equipment on my website if you need it: www.bealsscience.com/single-post/2016/05/02/Liquid-Nitrogen-Oreos-and-Twinkies

      Don't just eat it! Make sure you chew it up quickly and don't let it stay in one place in your mouth for too long or it WILL burn/freeze your skin or tongue. And, of course, do not swallow anything soaked in liquid nitrogen as it will severely damage your insides! But....you can chew it up quickly and enjoy a little freezing cool nitrogen!

    • @BealsScience

      No. The air around us is 78% nitrogen so there is no risk of poisoning from the gas itself. The cold is the major danger here.

    • @BealsScience
      @BealsScience  7 лет назад

      No. It is probably not very healthy...
      There is a real risk of freezing the tongue, throat, lips, or anything else the liquid nitrogen might touch. So, I would definitely put it in the 'unsafe' category. But, as a science demonstration for educational purposes, it is a very good attention getter and discussion starter!

    hey where did you buy tha container of liquid nitrogen? btw SUB! :)

    • @BealsScience
      @BealsScience  8 лет назад

      The actual container that holds liquid nitrogen is called a Dewar. You can buy them from science supply stores or on amazon (amzn.to/2a33uLg). The liquid nitrogen can be purchased at an industrial supply store or welding supply store or medical supply store - you will have to search your local listings for these. Industrial supply stores carry oxygen tanks, acetylene tanks, etc and most of them carry liquid nitrogen as well. Many of them will rent you (or loan) a Nitrogen Dewar to use so you don't have to buy one, but you would need to do some calling around to find out. Good luck on your hunt for Liquid Nitrogen!!

    Isnt it harmful for human being

    • @BealsScience
      @BealsScience  7 лет назад

      Pruthvesh Chaudhari it could be very harmful if a person allows the Nitrogen to come in contact with their skin for very long. And if you swallow it the damage would be very bad!

    • @pruthveshchaudhari6820

      Beals Science then how u ate the oreo ?

    • @BealsScience
      @BealsScience  7 лет назад

      Pruthvesh Chaudhari the heat and moisture in my mouth cause the liquid nitrogen to vaporize very quickly. This actually causes a barrier of gas between the liquid nitrogen and my skin! This barrier does not last very long because eventually even the skin will cool and start to freeze. But, for a very short amount of time my skin won't freeze! Oh, and I don't swallow any Oreo before all the nitrogen has vaporized from it; otherwise it would damage my throats and stomach.

      I've got about seven other videos with liquid nitrogen here: www.bealsscience.com/science-experiments but would love to have some fresh ideas if you think of any!

      +Tim Swanson Such a great way to learn! They are associating it with fun, and fun sticks! Just like fun memories! Exciting! Gah, when I grow up, I am going to get some liquid nitrogen and try some super cooled junkies!

      Thanks! My kids have been bugging me constantly to try the frozen treats - instead, because I didn't want them to freeze their faces off, I let them eat all of the "uncooled" left overs!
