NOTE: As of RSM V1.80.0, the screen handling bugs that required us to use V1.76.0 are fixed. If you're following along with the video after January 9, 2024, you can use the latest version of the RSM repository and not worry about using an older version tag.
It's fun to play with! Although I suspect some archeology would be involved in finding a version of FileMan old enough that you could install it under DSM-11 on the P(i)DP-11. But it does still work great under later (but still DEC / pre-Intersystems) DSM versions on VAX/VMS!
Great video! Fantastic series as well. Would you consider diving into the PICK System of databases? It was born as an OS but has commercial and well as open source versions (Rocket Universe/U2 and OpenQM) - It's a application platform - Multivalue (NOSQL) database with the BASIC language.
It'd be interesting to look at! I briefly encountered it about 20 years ago. It seems any implementations out there have all been slurped up by Rocket Software. It'd be nice to find copies of older versions -- even all the way back to when it was an operating system if there are any emulators of systems we'd be able to run it on. My *particular* interest in PICK now is that the formerly ubiquitous library management software, Dynix (not to be confused with the Dynix operating system), was implemented on top of PICK. I have fond memories of the terminals in my school and public libraries accessing the OPAC. I'd really like to get my hands on some installation media, or even an installed system image we can run, for Dynix. But my hopes aren't high, I suspect it's pretty unobtainable at this point.
Another awesome video!! I have a question - is there a way to delete a file after it's been created? I set up a FileMan environment in a Debian VM to play around with it, and I want to delete a test file I created.
Put VPE alongside standalone (MSC) Fileman into my NetBSD RSM install and I miss VA Kernel a little bit. Such a shame YottaDB doesn't compile on NetBSD.
Yeah it'd be nice of there were a few Kernel features that were brought over to standalone FileMan (or put together into a 'standalone Kernel' that doesn't bring in everything that's required for VistA but just provided a nice base for generic applications), like users/login and the menu system.

Great stuff. I am now intrigued enough to install FileMan and have a play. Running on a PiDP11 with a proper VT220 attached should be very cool!

Well done good over view ...though fileman can run on yottadb/gtm also .....
Cool.

Yep, when you modify the file, you can change its name to "@" to delete it.
@@MatthewMainframes Many thanks!!

@@MatthewMainframes Or just have YottaDB (or GT.M) compile on NetBSD.
there is a docker image done weekly by yottadb of current va vista image
Where is new videos about mainframes?? Where is new videos about IBMi??
