I lived in the campus for 24 magical years of my life between 1984, and 2008 (I left to the usa for higher studies in 2008). My dad taught at the dept. of metallurgy. He retired in 2013 and passed away in 2019.
While living there, I always used to attend some family oriented events like the dance competition and music concerts with my parents and sister. Saarang was called MARDI GRAS until about 1996 or 97. When I turned 13, because of my friends’ influence, I developed an interest in rock music. So since I was also old enough to attend the concerts with friends at Saarang. The rock concert and the dance competition at the OAT and the acoustic solo music competition (used to be called “unwind” back then and it was held under the trees outside the CLT building which was across the road from OAT. we also used to have a juke box outside the oat what used to blast songs on request during the day time. The whole road between Cauvery hostel and Gajendra circle was closed for vehicles for 5 to 6 days. I kept attending until 2008. I have fond memories of Mardi Gras / Saarang. I will make it a point to make it to Saarang next time I am in India.
