To study the Buddha Way is to study the self. To study the self is to forget the self. To forget the self is to be enlightened by the ten thousand things. Dogen

    Hey--"Calling occupants, of interplanetary craft...."
Love that 45 in the background. Asadly forgotten Carpenters single.
Interesting discussion. And 30 blows with a heavy book! Thanks! 🙏🧘‍♀️🧘

    Not lacking even a little...except a little realization.🤩

Here's a guess about the meaning of the word bank in this context. Bank, from which we derive the word for the financial institution, originally referred to the bench at which men sat conducting financial transactions. (The German word Bank retains this meaning as bench.) We still use bank in this sense, borrowed from French as en banc, to refer to a panel of judges. So maybe winning the entire bank means persuading a group of assembled judges? Just a guess, but I thought it was worth a go.

realism--something that Dogen grasps and something that a lot of buddhists miss. I love his essays on words. Chan buddhism (and Renzai) really pooh-pooh words--i.e., 'words can't express the way', 'studying sutras is lame', etc--but Dogen sees that words themselves (and sounds and colors) are expressions of the way. Words are not separate from enlightenment, because nothing is separate from enlightenment. None of this 'reality is an illusion' or 'reality is just a product of the mind' bullshit.

Tao Te Ching (Chapter 12) has a slightly different take on this issue:
"The five colours cause one's eyes to be blind.
The five tones cause one's ears to be deaf.
The five flavours cause one's palate to be spoiled.
Racing and hunting cause one's mind to be mad.
Goods that are hard to get injure one's activities.
For this reason the sage is concerned with the belly and not the eyes.
Therefore he rejects the one but accepts the other."

I think what Tao Te Ching intends to say here is that the data we receive through our five senses provide us a limited picture of the real world, and one needs to use their higher intuitive faculties to have a better understanding of the reality beyond the phenomenal world (which is a common theme in all mystical traditions).

"The world we see before us...is also a manifestation of the ultimate"
This is the most important sentence in the whole video.
And an idea that infiltrated Buddhism many centuries after the founder.
Both original Buddhism and Jainism are dualistic in that they do not accept this oceanic metaphor....where waves are only a manifestation of water.

Well, I'd say, said text is Kanbun, including diacritical marks, indicating the alternate word-order, when reading it in Japanese.
Proposal for translation for said phrase:
    a) Fully commit to learning (via theory, via practice) the teachings (of the Law)! Go for it all (“Va banque!“)! (Well, what would one expect, after all, it's a sermon, given by/at the Upper-Hall?)
    b) This learning should be done according to the true reality of all and everything, which is “so“ (here we go again: What should this “so“ mean, be ... or what/what not?)
A mountain - not a mountain - a mointain again, just so? One may wonder. Good old Zen-(quasi-)dialectics, again?
    Anyhow, thanks for sharing. -Regards

"I'm going to smack them on the head...with this book."
You get a similar impression reading a verbatim character-by-character translation of the Tao Te Ching. The words seem to have little or no relationship with the English translations which are wildly different from each other. Most of it is imaginative.

@@jttj742 Well spotify is £11.99 per month, so if I listened to 15 albums a month (and I wouldn't listen to that many) that would still be £11.99 for 15 albums. So not zero dollars (or pounds).
