  • The Metroparks Mountain Bike Area (MoMBA) at Huffman Park in Dayton, OH, has 9.5 miles of well-designed and well-maintained singletrack, with trails ranging from entry-level to advanced. The trails can also be ridden in either direction, effectively doubling the distance.
The trails featured in this video are Hawk's Lair and The Talon. Both trails are rated as difficult, and are intended for advanced riders. Hawk's Lair can be ridden in either direction. In this video, the trail is ridden counter-clockwise, beginning with a descent up "The Spiral," a heavily rock and root-filled climb of 100+ feet along a steep ridge. After arriving at the top of Hawk's Lair, riders will cross "The Big Bridge," a narrow 45 foot long polymer bridge overlooking Hamilton Ravine. The Big Bridge begins the easiest part of Hawk's Lair, as it is the gateway to twisty singletrack that has a narrow corridor in a densely wooded area, yet with little elevation change and the trail surface is smooth compacted clay. This doesn't last long, however: as the trail begins its descent, the terrain becomes more technical again, with heavily rock and root-filled sections. After the descent, riders are face with more technical riding in the Moonscape section of the trail, which is an open area of exposed rock. A short ride through a wooded section of trail takes riders back to Five Points Junction.
The Talon is just a short .3 mile trail, but offers the most difficult riding in the MoMBA trail system. Like Hawk's Lair, much of the terrain is heavily rock and root-filled. However, several features such as elevated skinnies, a boulder stair-case, a riding wall, and steep drops significantly elevate the difficulty of the trail. The entrance to the Talon is off the Moonscape section of Hawk's Lair.
Due to the increased difficulty of Hawk's Lair and the Talon in comparison to the other trails at MoMBA, it would be wise on the first ride-through to go at a slower pace and to scout some of the more technical terrain before attempting to ride it.
