🌽 60" Corn vs 30" with Inter Seeded Cover Crops 🍀

- Join us as we check out an awesome cover crop mix that was inter-seeded earlier this summer in both 60” and 30” corn rows! 🌾 🍀 🌽
And YES, there are huge differences when comparing 60” vs 30” regarding total biomass and which species & types of covers expressed themselves.
There are numerous benefits associated with inner seeding:
-feed for our livestock after combining,
-feed & habitat for our soil microbiology,
-and an opportunity to improve our ROI not only this year, but next as well.
So come along as we check out some tremendous inter-seeded cover crops from SE Minnesota!
To watch the 60" corn planting video from this exact field earlier this spring, check out this video with Luke Bergler: Search (Why 60" Corn?) on RUclips or here's the direct link: • WHY 60" Corn? 🌽🌽🌽

Please let us know the yield on the corn when it has been combined.
Update us on the yield difference when you know, please.
What do you use as an interseeder, when do you interested, and what is your interseeded blend?
It’s good to see the comparison. I’m wondering what the yield difference but there’s some good feed out there in the 60” row.
Cool video thanks. I wonder about stacking enterprises of processing and marketing fresh, dried, frozen, canned & fermented, pickled products on farm or with co-op processing of various cover crops.
Very good report!! Could you compare the biomass of the roots in 30" and 60"? Thanks a lot. Greetings from Bavaria.
Great idea.....we will see what we can do!
Do you have a follow up to the yield difference that you seen?
I want to know profit/ac not yield/ac. very cool this is on my bucket list
Thanks for the thought George!
Yes we have the opportunity to shift our focus from yield to ROI/profit per acre.
Keep up the great work Lance, love the videos and interviews. thanks for all your hard work.@@lanceklessigregenerativeag7901
Great video. Any idea when the cover crops were interseeded?
Good Day Kyle!
Thanks for the question and yes June 18th!
Have a great day! - Lance
@@lanceklessigregenerativeag7901 that's great, thank you! Any issues with turnips becoming "woody" or unpalatable to cattle by seeding so early since they have an earlier maturity? If aerial applying cover crops is there any advantage to doing it later in the year or will the corn be too canopied even with 60" rows to allow sunlight? Sorry for all the questions...I find this type of work very interesting!
@@kyletainter Regarding the turnips...cows will actually target them late into fall and winter. High value feed!
I think the we need to continue doing research re aerially applying seed and 60's. My hunch is that if we wait we likely will have alot more weed pressure and will be counting on a decent rain to get the seedlings started....which becomes more hit and miss into the summer.
And no worries re questions.....need to ask them to keep learning. Best! - Lance
So several have asked, yet there is no answer on the yields.
So are we to presume it was a much worse yield on the 60”?
Thanks for the question Rob.
Generally a 5-10% drop in yield is what we've seen. That said, this is an average as I've seen it where yield is maintained but also where 60" corn has a 25% reduction.
One also needs to make sure we are comparing apples to apples. lots of times we are also cutting our N rates. I've seen this too often where a guy says his 60" corn only yield 180 BPA while 30 ran 200. Then come to find out he didn't get weeds taken care of with 60" as well and he cut N rate by 25 pounds or %. Just a couple observations.
Best and thanks again for the ? - LAnce
Why not sow the maize as a double row with 60 inch spacing?
Not a bad idea!
Maybe in 2021 or utilize a different planter.
Great video!
How and when was the cover crop planted
What was the yield difference in this?
What yield on corn? What input costs?
What was your yield?
What was the results?
What population is the 60s verses 30s?
Thank for the question!
Here’s the planting video we did on the same field this spring regarding planting pop and other details.
ruclips.net/video/I7FONzPuenI/видео.html
The short answer is... an in row population of around 60-61,000 on the 60”. So across an acre the planted pop was about 30,000.
@@lanceklessigregenerativeag7901 I watched that video too. Didn't realize you were on same farm. Thanks
That should read “when do you interseed”, not “when do you interested”...apologies
Pat, check out a few of our other videos.
"Changing our focus...from yield to ROI" is a good one that shows some of the equipment. And typically around V1-V4 corn. I'll drop the video link in a different comment. Best!

@@lanceklessigregenerativeag7901 Thanks so much for taking the time to reply, Lance! Very much appreciated.
This could also be done by a drone
Novel idea
My Request to you all and scientists and Farmers market to grow such biggest Farm in my State Odisha, Bhubaneswar, Khurda, Cuttack in Odisha state in India
Why would you plant corn at all if your only gonna plant 60 inch rows? I don’t understand how a farmer could afford to plant that way and make a profit off of the corn harvest!!!
