    Solid review Shane for having it only 24 hours. I like the flat screen an convex buttons for not being places for water and dirt to collect. I'm a Bolt user and migrated after too many Garmin upload fails. The bolt has been solid for three years now!

    Great review, Shane! I'm not upgrading though, I love my Bolt. Only thing that leaves a little to be desired is checking the map and now quite dated micro usb. I love the monochromatic screen because it's very easy to see under bright sunlight without any backlight.

    I have the older unit and love it. Turn off the backlight if you want your battery to last a lot longer. There is no need for the backlight until you ride at night. I see everything clearly during the day. I prefer the smaller size and less weight on the old unit but the color screen on the new units looks preferable. Thanks for posting this video. I wondered about what changed and your video is excellent.

    Hey Shane! During your live stream yesterday, you asked me to share my feelings on the V2 after my ride big ride today. First the good, it works just like my Bolt V1, albeit with all the new features. The screen is so much better and easier to read and see. Routing was spectacular and also very easy to see and read. Honestly the screen is such a standout upgrade so far for me and I can't stop saying it. Also, although I didn't use the page, the colors for the HR and Power fields depending on your current zone are very cool and I'm loving those for future rides. The battery life seems way better than my OG Bolt. I was out for 4 hours 45 mins (3h30m moving time) and still had 70% battery when we finished the ride.
    Now for the bad (but not ugly). The only problem I had was getting my Vector 3 pedals set up correctly. The unit kept finding a device called "Vector 3" with what looked like an ANT+ ID when I would try to pair them. Problem is that it indicated the ANT+ ID of this unit was "unknown". So it would connect, but it wouldn't display any power data. I tried a couple times on the ride to fix it to no avail, assuming that I was just missing an update. I was missing an update, but that didn't fix it when I got home. After some more testing when I got home, I made the Bolt forget the "Vector 3" unit and tried to pair to the pedals again, this time instead of selecting "the Vector 3" option that always shows up as primary, I clicked the button for more on the pairing screen. This then showed me a unit called "Power", which shared the ANT+ ID of my pedals, as well as green bars for connectivity which were missing with the Vector 3 option. Voila! All fixed.
    So while that was a poor experience, I'm guessing that issue has more to do with the pedals than with the Bolt because of how the Garmin pedals connect to each other to connect to the head unit for dual power. Looking forward to many more rides with this beauty.

    • @gplama
      @gplama  3 года назад +1

      Interesting. I wonder if the 'Vector 3' named pairing was BLE and that's what it was having issues with. I've paired my Rally (which are effectively V3) via ANT+ with good results.

    Thanks for your latest review! I had the original Bolt, then upgraded to the Roam. When I did this, the color screen was nice, and the larger size screen was a very slight improvement. That said, I never found much use for the side LED lights, and the larger screen was only a minor advantage. After seeing this new Bolt, with the integrated colors for HR and Power Zones, I have been thinking a lot about the idea of switching to the new lighter unit, but my Roam still worked well, so I wasn't in any hurry to change. As fate would have it, after a ride in a remote location, I managed to put my Roam on my car's hood, while mounting my bike to the car rack, and wouldn't you know it?... I forgot it, and my Roam is now probably in a parking lot far away from home! Today I expect to take delivery of the new Bolt! I'm still scratching my head wondering if losing my Roam was a subconsciously intentional act!

    Thanks for testing a few off route scenarios. It is clear it has the same issue as roam does. It hides the thick black original route until you reach the end of the blue return route which results in infuriated rider who doesn’t know where to go after he is back on the route and it takes up to 3-4 seconds for black original route to reappear

    Used my Bolt v2 this past weekend. Loved all the the new features. Sadly, my Wahoo HR monitor and cadence sensor kept dropping out. Cadence was not too bad, but the HR was in and out every minute or so for the entire ride. I never had that happen on the original Bolt. I cleaned the sensors and popped a new battery in the HR monitor. Will try again this weekend.

    I received the Wahoo Bolt V2 yesterday. There was immediately a software update that I have made. Since I had a Bolt V1, I know my way around and have set everything as I need it. I have installed all the maps of Germany and neighboring countries. Today I did a 2h test ride, using route planning and a TraingsPeak workout. What I noticed immediately that the maps are not displayed correctly although I had my iPhone with me, was in the display the whole trip "LADE". I did get the road I was riding on displayed, but nothing of the surrounding area. The training data and sensors (power crank & RPM (Stages) & heart rate Tickr) worked fine. Something I'm surprised about the power consumption, because after 2h was already 20% battery power gone. The also shrunk from 100 to 79%. So a maximum driving time of just under 10h would be possible. Tonight there was a new update to WA20-11596, maybe it helps. Greetings Rouven

      @Click Bait The reason I've heard is because cycling is a bit of a niche industry. Because of this there's less investment, slower development in technology, and relatively high prices. Whereas everyone uses a cell phone so there are greater incentives to advance the technology.

      I wanted to stay positive in my initial comment so as to not detract from the quality job Shane did. But, moving on...I agree with others. For example, what's with the size of those bezels!? Bike GPS units are many years behind their smartphone brothers in utilizing the space available for the display screen and that's a shame for consumers and an embarrassment for the manufacturers. Not enough competition in the bike GPS market needed to push the screen technology forward? It may be a niche market, but it's not like these companies need to invent this technology. It's already out there in hundreds of millions of smartphones!

    Observation regarding the black-out: at 12:57 when you turn left the guide on top of the screen says you need to turn left in 146 meters, you turn "too soon" (you really don't) but the map says to turn when you did (so map and guide is not in sync). Just before it goes blank (13:05) it still states to turn left in 143 meters, after it comes back from the black screen it has reset the guide on the top of the screen to state turn right in 114 meters which I guess is correct. The fact that map and guide wan't synced might be the reason for the black-out

    The best part about the original bolt is gone: its e-ink like display. I really wish they would have gone for a colored version of it since they really felt obligated to add color for some reason. The original is high contrast and easy to read all the time, and looks high resolution because of the nature of the screen tech. This looks low res by comparison. I like wahoo because they chose to simplify where garmin and whatever others seem to just add add add. I hope they don't continue to go down that route.

      My bolt works fine with my Saris H3 trainer over ANT FE-C for structured workouts with ERG, manual settings, etc.
      However, when I last tried about a year ago, the Bolt’s ability to re-ride an outdoor ride inside on the trainer did not work except on an actual kickr. Supposedly this function still used KICKR proprietary Bluetooth control, but maybe that has changed...

    My first ride - I jumped away as with Favero and now Rally Pedals - the AVG PWR for the workout is low - I know that to fix it in TP you can simply cut a few seconds - but while training the head unit displays a low number - the individual laps seem fine. During import - TR and Strava are always higher (I assume correctly) but the device and app will show that. Is the answer to just not display AVG power workout, the NP is correct(?) - do you know why, it is different - the 530 and SRM PC8 numbers aren't low and they also have the exact same delay from the pedals from a stop?

    Hmm, good little review. I'm so embedded in the Garmin eco-system (multiple Edge units, multiple Forerunner watches, Varia Radar and a tonne of various sensors) I think I'd find it hard to switch over to Wahoo. That being said, I have a KickR (latest version) and a TickR, so things are kind of moving that way, sort of by accident. Does Wahoo have something like Garmin Connect, if so, does it offer the same level of metrics and statistics and can you transfer historical data from one to another. Fed up with various Garmin products failing on me and then battling with customer services, and I like the look of this new Bolt unit, but don't want to use different ecosystems 🤔

      I think it's assumed that you are using something like Strava for your metrics. The Wahoo companion app handles the data transfer/sync like Connect. All the Garmin sensors should work fine on the Wahoo though.

    • @lennartmeinke8861
      @lennartmeinke8861 3 года назад +1

      Wahoo certainly has better bike computers but Garmin is the better training tool I find, mainly because you can use their own app to plan workouts whereas you need third party apps for wahoo workouts.
      So, you might also decide to get the Bolt for navigation and showing data while having the workouts on the garmin watch (if you already own one)

    Quick question about battery Life?
    Hey Shane, Thank you for the detailed reviews.
    I own a Bolt V1 and I had for close to 3 years, my issue with it is the battery life can hardly last more than 8 hours with all the sensors (radar, heart rate, cadance and ...) this means on many longer rides I'm about to say my ride did not happen as the unit will die and I can't put the complete ride on strava. Long story short, Could you please share your opinion on Battery Comparison between the three Bolt1 ad bolt 2 and Roam, this will help me and many others on the upgrades.

      @testalino 3 года назад

      @@gplama that is true and I like a lot of things about it. Besides some k2 quirks that can be fixed, the screen readability in the sun and the battery usage of a bit more than 10 percent per h will likely never change. Also, the unit is absolutely massive compared to the bolt.

All units should have multiple touch screen UI and also be much larger screen size for the money payed for them.
