DJ Subaru, a Leeds-based producer and DJ with a passion for collecting and sharing sleazy synth music from across the globe.
Since starting to DJ out in the wild post-pandemic, DJ Subaru has built up a reputation for being a genre-defying selector in Leeds's queer nightlife scene. Starting their party last year, Pleasuremaxxx, a club night for music made for dancing but not for the club.
When not working the dancefloor, Dj Subaru can be found working in the studio on their synth-pop project Babes In love or other Italo-adjacent club music.
'For this mix, I selected nine of my favourite Italo disco tracks, all recorded in Italy between 1983 - 1986. Unearthing treasures full of fragile nostalgia and seaside sunshine straight from Nonna's record collection!'

It's awesome how many sounds, chord progressions and overall track moods are similar between Italo Disco and japanese City Pop
What you are hearing is the influence of early 80's American disco/r'n'b music, what people call Boogie now. Both Italo and City Pop borrow from it, City Pop much more so. Though some boogie classics were actually played by Italians, for example the Change albums.

Thanks for that reference Ruru, I wasn't aware of japanese City Pop. I was born really, really far away from Japan, its culture and any references to it. I'm surprised (due to ignorance!) how much amazing music they have created. I started listening to jazz recently and the amount of absolulelt mind bending jazz from Japan is amazing.

Both derive from early 70's funk.
Italo Disco is so underrated. Maybe its in the Eastern European in me but its just unbeatable.
Oh no, it's definitely a genre-defining sound for a different time. You would never find a party in Los Angeles in the 80's that wasn't playing classic bangers like "Spin It" by Sunbelt, "Danger" by The Flirts, "My Forbidden Lover" also the Flirts, and "Living on Video" by Trans X
Before House music, Chicago clubs plays many Italo-Disco tracks
try to listen Klein M.B.O. - Dirty Talk (USA Connection Instrumental) from 1982, a proto-house track 😀

In the USA it's almost entirely non-existent. At least with anyone under 40. (I am 25). Many songs have such a Warm, Vibrant, Beachy/Tropical kind of sound too them. Really uplifting to your Mood.
