The New BL1 'Bakerloop' Bus

- TfL have put out a consultation about added a new bus to the Superlook network - the BL1 which would run along the route of the proposed Bakerloo Line extension.
I got to have a sneak peek of what they bus looked like, and chat to the MD of Go Ahead, who would most likely run the bus out of their Camberwell Garage.
The TfL Consulation is here : haveyoursay.tf...

Is this the first time there's been a bus replacement service before there even IS a service? 😄 Love it!
Bus replacement rail service soon.
EL routes were meant to be replaced with trams.
@@davidparsons97 I've only ever heard of this once, in Essex, where trains were accepting local bus tickets, due to a road being effectively closed to all large vehicles.
I just love the name “bakerloop”, gives it so much more emphasis into what it’s made for
TfL missed out on the Jubileeloop as part of the proposed Jubilee line extension to Stratford and then the Northernloop as part of the proposed extension to Battersea Power Station Station.
@@MTGP1525jubileeloop would probably be a riverboat because of the number of times the jle crosses the thames
@@MTGP1525 Jubeloop, surely?
@NinjaSurferTrainspotting "Jubiloop"
Also the last tube moquette on a bus was on the Leyland Titan and MCW Metrobus based on the D Stock and the 1983 tube stock.
aha!! Great to know - thank you!
Great reply. Thanks!
Thanks for clarifying this. I wouldn't have known the bus/tube stocks but a quick google search confirms I know exactly which moquette is was.
@@geofftech2 NICE VIDEO MAN
That moquette was also found on many Leyland Olympians and Atlanteans in other parts of the country. Remember seeing it every day on the Yorkshire Rider Atlanteans I rode to school. Think it was a Leyland/BMC design rather than London Transport.
The fact that your videos get nearly 2000 views in just 23 mins shows how popular you are!
TfL should make Superloop bus routes for all the railway lines they are campaigning for, use stats for those buses to help with the business case for the railway and build up the ridership that can later move onto the trains.
As each railway extension finally gets authorised and built, the Superloop buses should be moved onto the next thing.
Brilliant, that would really shake things up.
Good idea actually
The 'Loop Bus services should be retained, and run in parallel with the same-named lines. This would make all-night running a bit easier to manage, as well as having a pre-built rail-replacement bus service. Naturally, all the fares and OSIs should still work with the buses.
How about having a cross-platform interchange between a bus and train ?
I've only just noticed that there's no daytime bus route that goes from Lewisham to Waterloo, you have to change for the 453 or 172 at New Cross. The only other direct option is the train which often face delays at Lewisham. And the only bus going between OKR and Lewisham is the 21 which gets filled to the brim often. So the BL1 would definitely do a lot for Lewisham.
the goat has uploaded again :)
helloo! thanks Nathan!! :-)
There is a prototype map my bosses at New York City Transit are thinking of implementing that would show our Select Bus Service BRT-ish routes on the map along with the subway.
The problem with adding this to the tube map, at least currently, is, personally, it’s already at information overload.
The SBS routes would be simple blue lines, not on par with the subway lines.
And for Bakerloop to join the map, you need some very specific way to convey “this is not the tube, this is a bus”.
They should. It’s on other maps
'Bakerloop' is fun to say for some reason
Innit 😃
"Bakerloo" is a good name as well, as Baker Street is about the only Z12 station to have an actual public toilet.
Do it, Do it, Do it. Been waiting so long for the extension
Bakerloop. I love that name. Very interesting name.
Finally, a Bakerloo line extension, but on a bus 😁 I was waiting for something like this to happen. The OKR routes are all very popular.
Bakerloop would be a nice stopgap before the Bakerloo Line extension.
Whilst I agree... there is nothing so permenant as a temporary solution 😞
EL routes were meant to be replaced with trams.
@@NikolaHoward Especially in British Rail days.
Need it on the section north of Queens Park too to aid the 18 which is always so overcrowded. 😅😢😭
Hi Geoff. Brilliant idea. To me it looks like a bus replacement service for the yet to be built Bakerloo extension. Cheaper than building the extension. 😂
I do like the livery, inside and out. 👏👏
PS Good to say hello and thank you at Egham Orbit parkrun yesterday. 🏃🏃♀️🏃♂️
Need something similar for the current line north of Marylebone to aid the 18 which ends uo acting as a rail replacement service thanks to the constant terminus of northbound trains at Queens park. 😅😢😭
The District Line D Stock had the same mocquette as the Metrobus, Titan, Olympian, and Nynny & Nynty , the two Dodge Minibuses A1 + A2 that ran the PB1. They were given those nicknames by PB staff because of their reg numbers, NYN 1Y & NYN 2Y.
Great video Geoff, much appreciated. From Australia🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺
Could this be the start of other types of routes such as the CentraLoop or the PiccaLoop services?
They should just bring back the Greenline express routes, so places around London can also benefit from these types of services. Would love the 724 (Harlow to Heathrow) to come under London Transport again.
Seconded I remember as a kid using the Green Rover ticket for days out in the school holidays
This would make a good trolleybus route! It would be great to have trolleybuses in the UK again.
W video Geoff! I'm very excited for the new superloop 2 map to come very soon 😊
Of course a tube train holds many more passengers than a bus, so extending the line should still be a priority.
Here in Queens, NY they just finished up a complete redesign of the entire bus network for the Borough. A massive undertaking with a lot of public input. I believe Brooklyn is next up for a redesign.
If the Bakerloo Line can't be extended further south than Elephant, then I quite like the idea of the Bakerloop, if only the buses were brown instead of red.
Nice one, Geoff 👍
The Bakerloo _can_ be extended. This is an interim route to test the waters.
I love when Geoff does buses, they're such interesting content.
Loving the bus series 👏🏽
is this a way for them to cancel the tube extension ?
This liveried bus is currently running on the 320 route.
that is a bit random
no. it's ebd27 tracking as ebd21.
Great Vid Geoff!
Great video Geoff is the New supperloop In service yet Bakerloop is good name 👍
Hi Geoff, sounds like the interior work was done by HD Trim in Eastleigh - ironically in the old rail yard!
It’s like it’s the Bakerloo line, but above ground.
In my opinion route BL1 to Waterloo aint that necessary because the existing Bakerloo line still stops at Waterloo
As well as the district mentioned here ,straub moquette was used on the metropolitan ,DMS ,BL,LS SMS from the C stock and 1972mk2 ,1973 and 1959 on transfer to the northern even the RCLs had straub when brought in use as buses ,nice 😊😊
Rupert the bear's trousers as a scarf is a fun look.
I reckon this is a ploy to take the extension off the books. Once up and running the route would effect the CBA of the extension. Ridership would be high on the BL1 so it would be difficult to argue for the building of a tube line to replace a bus route. The BL1 would make it less, and not more, likely that the Bakerloo extension would get funded.
Nice one Geoff Double Decker Anton works from Camberwell Bus Garage looks like you'll have to ride more bus routes you need to do a colab with him
One day we will hopefully meet each other, yes!
@geofftech2 OK I was watching your Baker Street video when this video came up
Prepared at Hants & Dorset Trim in Eastleigh. Not far from the Arlington Fleet Group works. May be an idea for a couple of future videos???
I seem to remember the Metrobuses in the late 90s had the same moquette as the D stock.
Love the concept definitely here for it. Just not the BYD’s please!
That's actually really cool
that bus could act as step while we wait for the bakerloo line extension.
Hants and dorest trim do the livery’s and seats in Eastleigh near Southampton and Winchester
Surely it should serve one of the Peckham stations? Seeing as that it would go past the area. a double run.
A double run would be against the point of an express right?
Now you’re back to alternative routes. BLE via Camberwell or OKRd? That was sorted after lengthy discussion. You don’t happen to live in Peckham, do you?
@Bruce-h8w maybe tfl should (not would) run two separate bus routes for each proposal, BL1 and bl2, to solve this issue, BL2 starting at elephant & castle and running to Lewisham (or even just New Cross Gate to reduce PVR) via peckham & camberwell
@progamingderash4566 they had two options for the BLE. Option 1 was Camberwell and Peckham Rye which got started but never finished. And Option 2 which is what TFL settled on permanently due to potential development for the area which is Old Kent Road.
Maybe a potential Crossrail 3, North West to South East. With Camberwell, Peckham and Lewisham. Long way away but hey who knows.
Super express buses should be on the tube map. To show connectivity to the tube
I am obviously in favour of the Bakerloop bus. However, I was born in 1948. When I was about 12 I remember reading a book on the London Underground which said that that it was proposed to extend the Bakerloo to Camberwell, and then perhaps on to Lewisham. Will I see that in my lifetime?
There used to be an illuminated sign at Warwick Avenue station which showed the stations served. Below Elephant & Castle was a blank space where something had been painted out. After many years the black paint started to peel off revealing ‘Camberwell’. I hope thar sign found its way to the LT Museum.
The current plans are to get to at least Lewisham by 2040 (knowing TfL though...)
I have seen the Bakerloo Line extension being proposed on and off since the mid 1980s, with Camberwell, Bricklayers' Arms, New Cross being prominent stops amongst most of those proposals. I think we're closer to it than it's ever been, but it's still touch and go.
Although this proposal of the Bakerloop express route is one of Sadiq Khan’s good consultations that he’s made, I would’ve preferred to see the whole bus exterior applied in an all-over brown livery to colour coordinate with the Tube line. Though it is really nice to see that their train’s Barman moquette has been fitted inside which
Well it's not quite a Tube line, but I suppose it's the next best thing (apart from a tram). Will this route have bus lanes and signal priority so that it can avoid getting stuck in traffic?
These new routes will be good
Waterloo was directly connected by bus with Lewisham for most of the last century, until comparatively recently. Routes 1 and 199 were the routes involved, usually one or the other, but occasionally both, although they went via a devious routeing. The main reason Old Kent Road and Lewisham have always been starved of much direct contact with each other relates to the way surface public transport was developed in S.E. London with bus and tram taking different roles and 'corridors'. Westminster and Blackfriars Bridges were fitted with tram tracks, but Waterloo Bridge never was, nor Waterloo Road. Old Kent Road was host to both modes, and it even had its own, relatively small garage (code P) which operated the 21 and 53 in conjunction with other garages, all now closed. The 21 competed with a tram route between Bricklayers Arms, Lewisham and on to Eltham, which was numbered 182 when RT buses replaced the trams in 1962. Cuts and consolidation followed over the years, so the 182, which reached Cannon Street Station via Southwark Bridge, ran for the last time in the 1960s.
I had to check that it wasn't February Fool's Day
As for the consultation, rerouting 453 to Lewisham and 436 to deptford may be enough without having to introduce an entirely new route
i think when they first announced this last year it was April 2nd, wasn't it? and i had the same thought!
What's the point of that if there's 21
@@fokuz2025 'cos the 21 doesn't go to Elephant and Waterloo.
The main reason for not doing it is because simply rerouting the 453 doesn't alleviate overcrowding on the route.
@ oh ok
I wonder if they will bring out BL2, BL3 and so on… 🤔🤣
I hope for a BLT!
Via Camberwell and Peckham
I hope not. All these branches will dilute from it being a "line".
You should get over to Kent to see fast track buses as it’s the only fully electric bus company. Going to be running 28 electric I tram buses as part of go head group.
This could be pretty interesting.... A sort of tester to see how many passengers use it, in order to justify the Bakerloo Line Tube extension,
that actually looks rlly nice
i know more about london buses than my own city's (liverpool) buses at this point
It looks weird seeing the bakeloo Line's moquette on a bus, they could at least put some plastic at the side like what Go ahead did with their normal seats
The return of the Chocolate Express - nice.
Good practice for Rail Replacement service as well if BLE does happen future maintenance happens. I hope they give us BL2 and BL3 beyond Lewisham to service Beckenham, Bromley and Hayes.
Did you have a 'Camberwell Carrot' whilst you're down there? 😂😂😂
As a recent recipient of an OAP's English Bus Pass,
1. Can I use it on Superloop?
2. How does the bus company get paid for my trip?
Not accepted on TfL, check their website for other fares but standard rate for Superloop is only £1.75 anyway.
@@georgecandelin8720 I have used it on Standard London Buses!
I use my OAP bus pass frequently for SL8, SL9 and SL10. So yes, it certainly is accepted.
@@brianparker663 Thank you @brianparker663, It's nice to know for sure. 👍
Anyone else think that by having what is basically a rail replacement service, even though there is nothing yet to replace this will delay the building of the extension even more ?
BL 1, eh? Will there be a courier on board serving bacon and lettuce sandwiches but without tomato???
You know how you can have afternoon tea on an old routemaster? These could become BL-Tea buses once the tube extension is complete.
Don't get too attached to the name Bakerloop, they can always change it to something else we'd have to get used to like they did to the Goblin..
Man, I would've loved these so much more if they'd been trams...
Ah, but I remember the old trams. I know they've been heavily modernised, but they retain their inbuilt weaknesses.
@Bruce-h8w You mean the weaknesses of not getting stuck in traffic, being faster, more reliable due to using the same timetabling as tube trains, holding more passengers than buses, being more energy efficient, greener for the environment, having better climate control, more charging ports, being quieter, and costing far, far less to operate in the long run?
Oh, so it looks like we will not get the much-needed Bakerloo Line extension to Lewisham to serve the tube desert that is South East London, but a bus instead. What does Major Khan know that we don't?
I thought the whole purpose of extending is the Bakerloo is to relieve the Old Kent Road which is congested from all the buses.
If this works instead then I can see the extension never happening...
BTW, district seat moquete was used on some buses in the Orpington area (e.g. 51) in the early 90s.
I can wait see the SL11 SL12 and BL1 bus
What I would want SL13 like (Arriva using electro liners) Caterham on the hill - addington via selsdon
I’d be better then the 466 which takes forever
My issue with calling it Bakerloop is that it's not part of a loop, it's just an express route which has an interchange with the Superloop.
See also SL6 and SL8. Worse still, the upcoming SL4 doesn't interchange with the loop, and the SL6 isn't even express between Croydon and West Norwood.
The orbitals should have been numbered 1-8 and the radials from 9 onwards, or preferably just kept as Xs and renumbered from 1 in order of introduction, seeing as there are several more to come!
Hmm, not part of the loop. Can we call it “Superloo” then? It is brown…
Have they taken into account the horrendous traffic conditions along the Old Kent Road?
Nice video Geoff! I hope the bakerloo extention becomes a reality 🤞🤞 Also, would you ever do a video in the South cotswolds area? Because apart from me and my friend, this area hasn't ever really been covered before
This does make me wonder if there are other places where a tube extension bus might work. May be UNO might rebrand their 614/644 service as either Jubliloop or Northloop as they extend the Jubliee and Northern lines in to Herts with a fast section on the A1(M)
The current "Superloop" buses in my area are slower than "normal" buses, so it's actually quicker to walk.
Is this East London or is it the SL9? Those are the only ones that come to mind
Being as slow as normal buses I’d get but how are they slowER?
@Ro99 He's talking tripe.
my question is if the extension comes to fruition, why is the bus route going to be a thing if it just goes the same route? wouldn’t one negate the other
Why is this part of SuperLoop ? It doesn't exactly travel orbitally around London. The SuperLoop network is essentially a complete circle, so what does the BL1 add to the SuperLoop ?
That aside, the BL1 BakerLoop is a great idea, especially if it gets onto the UndergrounD map, and takes on some characteristics of a BRT line.
One thing though. If the BLE gets built, will it use the presence of a ready-made Replacement Bus Service to justify constant service interruptions ?
the superloop is just the express buses
Do you know why they are starting the route at Waterloo? - maybe the change from tube to bus will be easier there? - or perhaps they anticipate a lot of people arriving at Waterloo station from the west country will want to travel to the Old Kent Road, and this will save them one change?
I believe there's no capacity at Elephant for another bus to terminate there. One of the proposed cutbacks a few years ago involved changing where one of the existing buses terminated in order to curtail another route to that point. I forget which number(s) but I remember the detail 'cos I used to interchange there and it would have inconvenienced me.
I didn't expect that
Route BL1 will temporarily use until the Bakerloo Line extension open?
Bakerloop needs to be added so that there isn't congestion at Waterloo at rush hours
Ahhh, my favourite GAL depot that's (Q) Camberwell that is, even tho Merton is HQ for GAL it is actually Camberwell
It’s a bit odd that TFL renumbered buses like the 36a or similar as they didn’t want routes with letters and end up with SL routes after all. So much for progress as it were.
Tfl only got rid of suffixes, not letters entirely
29th comment! I usually don’t watch RUclips but I check it every day to see if you have made a video
If this was 1st April I would question this video
How Long Is It On Trial For Please I Want To Know And Where Whold I See The Bakerloop
You mean these Go Ahead vehicles aren't painted by hand like in Yorkshire Go Ahead by 1x person. Wouldn't it also take long to refurb seat coverings, has stated overnight.
Waterloo - Lewisham via Elephant and castle Burgess Park, Old Kent road, New Cross gate and Loampt vale
Just watched old video from the old euro star at Waterloo Station
Nice 🙂🚂🚂🚂
sonce its thr bakerloop, can we rename waterloo to waterloop?
Oh! Buses as interim service offering, the danger is temporary measures all to easily become permanent!
These services are really just a branding exercise and mostly just use existing route and provide an excuse to cut existing services. Just like the cutting of 'overbussed' central services would mean that they were redeployed and what we got was a cut in suburban services too. The current proposals of the outer loop will just carve up existing services.
I love this but this is not an 'excuse' or 'replacement' of the BLE
Never seen Barman in brown before.
The BL1 will probably be a failure as the two attempts at an express 53 service in the 1990s, namely the X53 and the 53ˣ were a failure, as they clearly no longer operate (53ˣ was withdrawn by 2000).
I can commend Go-Ahead London for maybe trying to make this 'Experimental' route work when it officially launches.
And What Dates Is It Active
The bus which has train seat on it as the ScotRail bus in Glasgow what goes from central station Glasgow Queen Street Buchannon bus station and it finishes at Glasgow Central and it’s a loop bus so that’s the one but I definitely like the super loop bus I wish we had that in Glasgow that would be so good for the city but I do think the super loop bus has had the idea from filx bus they run in the same way they don’t stop at many stops and I’m much quicker and the other buses I’ve always liked that idea
New bus
If there weren't any objections to have a zero or an "O" on a route name/number, then the "BLO" or "BL0" route would trip off the tongue better.
bakerloop
😃👍🏾 (I'm the one who makes fictional transport) But I didn't know this.
