The 747 has such a serious and statesmanlike facial expression. And it's very, very good-looking too. If I was a jetliner I'd marry a 747 in a heartbeat. ✈❤✈
Funchal is still not a very long runway so floating so far down is scary. I first landed at Funchal before the big extension of the runway out over the sea,it was scary then.
Loved the last one. Reminded me of a landing at Paphos airport on Cyprus for a holiday years ago. It was also a visual approach with a very tight last minute turn onto final. It felt like the wing was going to touch the ground ✈️🍾❤️
I don't know if this is true everywhere, but in California firefighting helicopters can operated after dark while fixed-wing operations are restricted to daylight.
00:30 - Touching down waaaaaay after the marks is less of a problem than it might otherwise be if you're battling a strong side/headwind. The plane clearly had plenty of airspeed and a lot less ground speed than it would have had in calmer conditions, so the pilot evidently judged that his brakes and reversers would be more than enough for a safe landing at that particular time, in those particular circumstances. A go-around was always an option, but he had no guarantee that the blustery winds weren't going to get even worse, hence the decision to land late. It looked like a good decision to me. Know your plane, know your terrain, know your limitations. 🙂
@@gort8203 Hmmm… once they go past the TDZ markers how do you think they can judge how much runway they have left? This is a mandatory go around at any major airline otherwise you’ll be having a ‘no biscuits’ chat in the office with a manager.
If you have a strong headwind, you would land sooner, not later. The pilot didn’t “judge” anything on this. There is a reason why most airlines won’t allow this. This was a poor decision.
@@neiledwards8454 It may be a mandatory go around in today's airlines, but that doesn't mean the airplane didn't have enough room to safely stop under existing conditions. If it's a mandatory go around it's because airlines no longer trust their pilots to apply skill and judgement, and from what I've seen of pilot skill in many RUclips videos I can't blame them. And it becomes self- perpetuating because pilots who never land a bit long can't develop the judgment needed to determine how long is clearly safe. Glad I'm retired and don't have to fly with new-age automation managers.
@@rtbrtb_dutchy4183the runway at Funchal goes uphill with a clearly visible incline. So they knew they were on the slope before the incline, and thus had some indication of where they touched down.
Yes, you can get "idle" reverse thrust at the minimum setting, but on a wet runway the pilot needs more help slowing down because the wheel brakes are less effective.
I do love these videos, yet sometimes the description doesn't match the event. The 747 cargo float wasn't the result of a sudden wind gust, it was the result of an excessive pitch application for landing flare.
First one looked like he was just about to touch down when a cross gust hit him; instead of possibly damaging the plane, he straightened it THEN touched down. Note I am NOT a pilot; this is a guess based on observation - I could be wrong. I don't know which are the better pilots - fire fighters or LifeFlight .... I've watched both in action. I think they're even better than many Navy pilots!
Or maybe just a long lens? Paro is nestled between mountains in the middle of the Eastern Himalayas, so this might just be taken by someone at an elevated position that overlooks the airport. If you look it up on Google Maps with 3D terrain view or just watch Paro approach videos on RUclips, you'll see how it's surrounded by tall mountains. It is a famously difficult approach, and the number usually quoted is that only ~50 or so pilots are allowed to land there.
The first one...thats something i always wonder about. They usually go around, but looking at it realistically, its still easily a safe landing. Whats so wrong about landing?
@@sidewinder666666they are not “certified”. The authorities require a pilot to do a sim session or fly in with someone who has. The approach isn’t that hard, just unusual.

747 clip = smoothest go around ever
You could feel the brave fire-fighting pilot's intense concentration in his voice, and some understandable nervousness. Genuine heroes.
that china southern touchdown was butter

No gust of wind on ABC Dash 8, he simply flared too high. It happens and GA was the correct response
He was coming in way too fast also
agreed. nose would have dipped initially attempting to hold rate if it was a gust, right? opposite of a sudden nose up.
I thought you were talking about a De Havilland Dash 8 for a minute
@@imvivalamilo I did too. Think twice if you spell out "-" !!! Some of us are kinda dumb. Wouldn't have noticed the flare without this comment.

Paro is insane aproach
If that 747 didn’t do a go around, that would have been the smoothest landing ever.
Maybe but I m not sure the way she would have come to a complete stop would have been defined as smooth
The 747 wasn’t a wind gust, that was a ballon because they over flared.
Exactly.
Excellent 👏

Magnifique
Interesting livery on the Air Bridge Cargo plane and a smooth landing for the China Southern plane.
Great video!😸
Thank you
That air bridge has beautiful livery.
