Fiji, a country in the South Pacific, is an archipelago of more than 300 islands. It's famed for rugged landscapes, palm-lined beaches and coral reefs with clear lagoons. Its major islands, Viti Levu and Vanua Levu, contain most of the population. Viti Levu is home to the capital, Suva, a port city with British colonial architecture. The Fiji Museum, in the Victorian-era Thurston Gardens, has ethnographic exhibits.

As a person who previously lived in Fiji for 7 years, I have never seen Fiji in the other light than being a very beautiful place with very pro max friendly locals.
Fiji is an amazing island. I can’t wait to go even deeper next time.

Very nice video, Ivain. It's really nice to see the different kind of resources that's available to the children in that community. I'm glad to see that the classes are not overcrowded. The students will definitely thrive in that system. I grew up wearing uniforms to school in Jamaica, I really do think that it encourages students to do their best in their studies. It's almost the same as Catholic or private school in the US. Great content brother. Thank you so much for sharing this visit to the school. I enjoyed watching 👍👍👍.

***How is the relationship between the Indians and the local Fiji population? Is it like they have it in Guyana, acrimonious?
Fiji was one of the places Indians were sent to during the British Indentured Labourer System.
Both communities get along well generally and there are interracial marriages too.
Respect boss man. I try to stay away from comparing channels but some travel channels do the skyscraper tourist trap thing, others go to like my country Jamaica and try to find the most derelict places. I like thaf you just do normal.

Ivan, that man doesn't have a village. He's a indian fijian descendant. Native fijians are the ones that have villages. If you wanna learn about the real FIJI, then i consider you ask a native fijian to take you around. Im 100% sure you'll find what you're looking for

Great vid. As a Fijian native but living overseas, im following yr fiji trip quite eagerly n loving yr the content. I can attest to the corporal punishment during my time growing up .. 70s & 80s and i tell ya - was no joke LOL. the debate is still out on that one i suppose - it did keep me in line and i went on to university then corporate ... but i know others that did NOT succeed due to the harsh discipline. But i fully support the change as our values as a modern society have changed as well. Not to say that Fiji parents no longer whoop their kids at home - oh no they do ! Just not in the school system no more. One thing i wish for is for teachers to get paid more for the hard work they do for such a vital profession.
Yes Fiji is a multi cultural society and i can say theres a lotta harmony between the races in the rural areas. A lil less in urban as you factor in money & business ownership & the so called "class" ( have n have nots ) and with urban rears the ugly head of politics which always hits on our differences as a people for polítical gain. But still as a whole we are harmonious though culturally native Fijians and indo Fijians are on opposite sides of the scale.
My recommendation to you Ivan is also go film at a high school .. and then a tour of the University of the South Pacific in Suva, my alma mater. Youll love it there seeing all the different students from all over the pacific ( as its a university for about 12 or 13 pac island countries) as well as exchange students from overseas including the US.

Hello Ivain. Wonderful information. The school infrastructure looks like any other school infrastructure in the developing world. The issue of not caning children came about as a result of countries ratifying the UN Convention on the "Rights of the child that was introduced in 1989". This treat came too late for the rest of us (older generation). Caning was normal. This treaty made it illegal to subject children to torture. It is one of the most widely ratified UN treaties. But there is one country that has not ratified it. Guess which one.

We had corporal punnishment in schools here in the U.S. way back in the sixtes, seventies and before that!

Great content Ivan. I thought you missed a key follow up point. The young man said they cremate starting from 17, 18 or so. My question is what happens to those who die aged 16 or younger.
Also Ivan , cremation is widely done in the US by christians , not sure about Muslims. Its just that it is not done in a public way which probably would spook those of us who are not Hindu. In a way it speaks to the comfortability of Hindus around life and death i guess. I am from Zimbabwe where we have many Indians and did not know about some of these practices. I also have been to Mauritius, Tanzania, Kenya, Zanzibar , South Africa etc where there are plenty of Indians and it is always fascinating for me to notice the subtle differences between how laid back the transplants seem to be versus those straight from India. I see you have 26K , true testament that if you provide good content people will subsribe and follow.

I have lived in that part of the world decades ago But I know there is still underlying tensions between Native Fijians and INDIANS ( They wish to Control the Island!!! ).

I think i subtly mentioned that, there was 2 coups because of that. Native fijians own 80% of the land, and many Indians has many businesses.
That is hindi culture bro, in regards to burning of the body. Indo fijian are cool, but is not regarded as Fijians or native Pacific islanders melanesians, polynesians or micronesians
Not these days, the coups stuffed that a long time ago and both communities get along well with each other mostly.
I don't see anything that will change how i see Fiji. It's still the same. The only thing different is that the Govt now provides Free Education which is a positive step in the right direction. Fijian children now are better educated then say 10 - 20 years ago.
Uhhm, the previous government implemented the free education scheme 16 years ago and even implemented loan and scholarships scheme for university student. This government is only continuing that scheme although they have amended the university scholarship and loan scheme.
@@ElenXSav That's right. The previous Govt did a lot in the development of Fiji in many areas including education, which is my comment on children now being better educated. This present "Money Grabbing Govt" is just riding on the back of the previous Govt's success. That's my own personal view and argument for a different Vlogg !

But I'm just letting you know, perhaps if you also want to learn about the fijian culture, then the culture that this man is showing you is not the fijian culture. Please don't get confused or mixed up with the two totally different cultures 🙂
