Depending on how dense the plastic is, you'd be surprised at how effective plastic CAN be at stopping bullets. Not saying it will stop a .50 BMG but maybe a 9mm or 10mm, which would be impressive if it can.
i think leaving a little cube or other shapes of this stuff in various liquids like your other "leaving [thing] in [liquid] for 30 days" videos could be interesting to see what can eat away at this stuff or weaken its structure or just generally seeing the changes

So back when I worked in a haunted house we used these things to put in our vampire fangs. Basically the thermoplast was crammed into the fang and then we held it against our teeth to make a perfect fitting denture. Also these are the same types of plastic used to make football helmets.

I played around with this stuff ages back. Yes, it makes fantastic repairs or custom/ad-hoc grips for tools. There is absolutely nothing more ergonomic. It's even quite easy to impregnate cloth/mesh with it which is probably my plan for upgrading the camping kit. A mesh reinforced stable plastic roll? Could repair anything or even be used as a cast/splint if you had enough of it. The only problem is you can't leave anything you make with it in the car in the summer. I had a knife handle melt and irreversibly integrate itself into the fabric of the rear seat.
Yep, it's a double-edged sword. Its biggest strength also means this really works best in cold climates, since there's little risk of unintended "applications" on a hot summer day.
So far it looks like this should be a useful addition to anyone's camping bag. Another thought was it seems well suited for making an improved splint or cast if you couldn't get to medical services while camping within a couple of days..... Overall looks like a very ingenious product that could find uses in anyone's garage/workshop.
Maybe you should just be more careful camping instead of carrying the extra weight? If you can't be that careful, don't camp two days out. It's pretty simple. Otherwise how is it especially ingenious to merely recognize that there are a few thermoplastics that melt within the boiling point of water? However, if you want something for your stated purpose, it would be a lot handier to take epoxy with you, then to make your cast you just take cloth, cut it into strips, wrap around the needed area and coat it with the epoxy, sort of like laying fiberglass. No need then, for an injured person or anyone else, to have to fool around with having a pot, water, making a fire, waiting for it to heat up, instead of simply mixing some epoxy together and waiting 5 minutes for it to set.

You could achieve similar results with other materials/methods but this one allows for a little more control if a specific shape/function is desired and repairs only require creating a fire instead of using up the limited amount of epoxy someone can bring.

Like 15 years ago when I did special F/X makeup this kind of stuff was slowly making its way into private markets. It makes good teeth, fingernails, and horns for all you cosplayers.
this stuff has been around for YEARS (Decades)... as an ART SUPPLY. it was called Fantastic Plastic (back in the day). We used it as kids to make pins & chains (using paperclips as links).. and mold small figurines.
I've been using them in my small repair business for years. They're very handy. They're made of the same thermoplastic that many commercial products are made from so are just as strong.
Umm, no, there are several thermoplastics and merely, also being a thermoplastic, does not magically make them all "just as strong", and no, most commercial products are not made from Polycaprolactone, where its higher cost and lower melting point are usually seen as DISadvantages that make there be no sense in selecting it. It's really only the best for the marketed purpose, that with the low melting point it can be shaped by hand so you can... shape it by hand. Name one other commercial product made from Polycaprolactone? I mean besides the raw material sold for hobbyist/etc uses.

In our shop I have a little hammer with an aluminum handle, one side of the head is brass and the other is plastic kind of similar to the type you're using. It's super useful for anything I need to lightly tap. Very useful to me in making fine adjustments to my machines.
Do a type of jar video! Put 5 foods inside the molded plastic! See how well the food keeps, and how easy it is to get to the food in an emergency situation.

Why? The torque #'s would be lower than tapping threads into any harder material. It would just prove what is already obvious, that low melting point plastics are a poor choice for that.
Welllllllll, yes you could but those products were injection molded,,,,,,,,,, so they were forced under roughly 20-30 000 PSI in a mold under hydraulic clamping force and mold that were almost perfect shapes................................... so you could never ever ever ever ever ever do this at home,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, thats unless you had an injection molding machine and the ability to make a mold for it....................................... Get off youtube and get a real job you loosers. Oh wait you could its called the principle, so if you have a hyraulic press, and heat up plastic then force it into a mold thats very well machined and made, you could. not just melting it in a pot........................................................................
I take Thermo plastic camping. I have used it to patch a boat. I have made tent stakes and rings to attach ropes. Fixed a gun butt. And made cups and a bowl. Used for cereal.

I like to heat the metal part directly and stick it in the dry beads. It sticks to the metal a lot better and it doesn't rust so much. When you use water it traps water against the metal and it rusts pretty quick. I also found out that this type of plastic degrades in 2 years time and gets brittle as well as much stickier when melted.
i work in a plastics factory, that just looks like the material we use to make the stuff. the clear kind is used for things like those brita jars, or the thing that covers the car lights. you can really make anything out of it, you just need to heat it up so it'll melt and then mold it. obviously in a factory it's melted at over 200ºc, so it becomes liquid, which is easier for machines to inject into the mold. however, if you use boiled water, that's around 100ºc, it'll make the plastic soft enough to work like a putty, and if you're quick, you'll be able to mold it by hand before it cools down into shape. and if you make a mistake, you can just put it on another pot of boiling water and start again. so yeah i guess one could use it as a fake tooth, you'd just need something shape the plastic to the right size and shape and then find a way to keep it in place
@@tpad6 i meant it in the sense of while you're molding it, the water will have cooled down and you'll need to reboil it. not in the sense of getting a different pot of water to boil when there's a pot of water next to you

In regards to the full plastic hammer, you could get some pipe fittings and pipe, full with lead and mold around it and make a dead blow hammer. That could be neat!
If the object you are binding is porous enough it can basically fuse the objects together. The shrinkage on cooling however isn't great for smooth things.
Oh hey! This reminds me of my job! i work in a plastic pipe factory and take the left-over plastic grind it up with a huge grinder and then put that into a machine called a pelletizer that heats it up, pushes it through a screen then cuts it into tiny pellets. Those then get made into more pipes! ^)^
Great video Tyler! I would've loved to see you use the screws that were in the saw handle with this. Can you drill through it easily to make the screw holes? I think that would be really interesting. Does it get pliable again if left in the sun or in a hot car?
And you gotta heat the hammer head to get a tighter fit. When the hot plastic hits the cold hammer it starts to solidify. Hotter hammer slows down cooling process. Again great video.

Tyler, what do you think about using this type of thing again but having a mold of the item? Squishing the beads into the shape you specifically want and chipping/sanding away at the edges so you can perfectly mold the right tool/item? Thought about that when you used the hammer. Overall super cool stuff
I’m no pro but I’d assume the issues you were having with the saw and hammer were because the table wasn’t sturdy. It was bouncing on the nail test and wobbling on the saw test
It's also because if you don't have a steady support, you use the back end of the saw blade and shorter strokes, not the front end. The hammer was just uncoordinated and poor planning.

One little chain link was able to hold 485lbs, I would imagine in small scale use you could use this to replace a broken bar, but I'm not quite sure on the feasibility on a WHOLE ladder. I guess it comes down to the thickness of the ladder as well as your body weight.

I use this stuff when when making teeth for my bands masks, in all honesty is you get the beads to a shape you like and put it in the freezer they harden quick
I have used it with an old hotwheels mold kit to make hotwheels cars. Smash it down around something to make a mold you can use to make copies of things.
Maybe if you molded the chain link and then threw the whole thing back in the water to make it soft and bond the ends to each other more. I think it might get that 600 pounds !!
That's a great idea, since it melts back together the bond should be stronger! Regardless I think he showed that stuff is very tough! I wonder if cooling it rapidly would make it stronger or more brittle like heat treating and quenching steel.
Tbh I could see the point of using this stuff to fill in a chipped molar that lost it’s filling, it’s compressive strength is more than enough and the color is a bonus
I could actually see this being really useful to make tools that are non conductive and won’t set off a metal detector or stick to an electromagnet. This would be awesome for like a custom lockpick set, or bypass devices. Great way to have tools on you in a nonpermisive environment.

I used these to mold a toe insert for my ski boots to reduce some volume in the toe box. Worked like a charm

Try forming it over some Bolts/nuts and see what kind of TQ numbers you can get out of them as socket wrenches and such.

I take Thermo plastic camping. I have used it to patch a boat. I have made tent stakes and rings to attach ropes. Fixed a gun butt. And made cups and a bowl. Used for cereal.
Id like to see if you could make a lawn mower blade ,can it be sharpened to cut grass and take the forces of being run at high rpms.
Then you need another way to spend your time because that would be a silly waste of time and not work well at all.

I like to heat the metal part directly and stick it in the dry beads. It sticks to the metal a lot better and it doesn't rust so much. When you use water it traps water against the metal and it rusts pretty quick. I also found out that this type of plastic degrades in 2 years time and gets brittle as well as much stickier when melted.
You should’ve compared the Love Hammer with the plastic one.

Indeed, I suspect the saw would have been much more stable to saw with used on a workbench.
Try using it like an epoxy stick to repair things, like patching a damaged PVC/pex pipe and seeing how it holds up.
i work in a plastics factory, that just looks like the material we use to make the stuff. the clear kind is used for things like those brita jars, or the thing that covers the car lights. you can really make anything out of it, you just need to heat it up so it'll melt and then mold it. obviously in a factory it's melted at over 200ºc, so it becomes liquid, which is easier for machines to inject into the mold. however, if you use boiled water, that's around 100ºc, it'll make the plastic soft enough to work like a putty, and if you're quick, you'll be able to mold it by hand before it cools down into shape. and if you make a mistake, you can just put it on another pot of boiling water and start again.
so yeah i guess one could use it as a fake tooth, you'd just need something shape the plastic to the right size and shape and then find a way to keep it in place

@@tpad6 i meant it in the sense of while you're molding it, the water will have cooled down and you'll need to reboil it. not in the sense of getting a different pot of water to boil when there's a pot of water next to you

In regards to the full plastic hammer, you could get some pipe fittings and pipe, full with lead and mold around it and make a dead blow hammer. That could be neat!

Trying using it as a glue and separating it with the wooden blocks and the crane scale.
If the object you are binding is porous enough it can basically fuse the objects together. The shrinkage on cooling however isn't great for smooth things.
Oh hey! This reminds me of my job! i work in a plastic pipe factory and take the left-over plastic grind it up with a huge grinder and then put that into a machine called a pelletizer that heats it up, pushes it through a screen then cuts it into tiny pellets. Those then get made into more pipes! ^)^
The fully plastic "hammer", although way better than I expected, wouldn't replace a metal hammer but it looks like it would be a fantastic *mallet.*

Great video Tyler! I would've loved to see you use the screws that were in the saw handle with this. Can you drill through it easily to make the screw holes? I think that would be really interesting. Does it get pliable again if left in the sun or in a hot car?
This stuff has been around in the miniature community for ages.
We use it to make molds for casting, simple small parts.

And you gotta heat the hammer head to get a tighter fit. When the hot plastic hits the cold hammer it starts to solidify. Hotter hammer slows down cooling process. Again great video.

Tyler, what do you think about using this type of thing again but having a mold of the item? Squishing the beads into the shape you specifically want and chipping/sanding away at the edges so you can perfectly mold the right tool/item? Thought about that when you used the hammer. Overall super cool stuff
I’m no pro but I’d assume the issues you were having with the saw and hammer were because the table wasn’t sturdy. It was bouncing on the nail test and wobbling on the saw test
It's also because if you don't have a steady support, you use the back end of the saw blade and shorter strokes, not the front end. The hammer was just uncoordinated and poor planning.
This has been a long standing issue on Tyler tube. I'd like to see him put together a real work bench with a built in vice.

i've made a couple of roll cages out of this for fpv rc cars, easy to repair with hot air gun.

You should do a whole video testing fishing line on the crane scale. To see if they hold up to the weights they say they can.
Trying making a ladder out of instamorph. I'd love to see if that would actually hold up but that would obviously be a lot of material lol.
One little chain link was able to hold 485lbs, I would imagine in small scale use you could use this to replace a broken bar, but I'm not quite sure on the feasibility on a WHOLE ladder. I guess it comes down to the thickness of the ladder as well as your body weight.
@@point-five-oh6249 Well for the ladder idea, maybe use it in concert with wood or pvc, the instamorph being the only thing supporting the parts. Specially if he drills holes in the parts to keep it stable.
@@MyAramil Yeah I could see that maybe working. Just using the instamorph plastic for support beams, or the steps on the ladder. That would probably be fine. But an entire ladder would probably cost you more in the plastic material than it would to just get some wood or a pre-constructed ladder from Lowe's/Home Depot.

You could always drill a few holes in the hand saw and screw it to the blade for even more strength, honestly that stuff is pretty awesome.
Maybe if you molded the chain link and then threw the whole thing back in the water to make it soft and bond the ends to each other more. I think it might get that 600 pounds !!
That's a great idea, since it melts back together the bond should be stronger! Regardless I think he showed that stuff is very tough! I wonder if cooling it rapidly would make it stronger or more brittle like heat treating and quenching steel.

I bet that slight springiness would make for a great bow to shoot some arrows (maybe also make the arrows out of it?)
I could actually see this being really useful to make tools that are non conductive and won’t set off a metal detector or stick to an electromagnet. This would be awesome for like a custom lockpick set, or bypass devices. Great way to have tools on you in a nonpermisive environment.
