So much useful information in here! I had a call with Duarte a little while ago and he's a well of knowledge. Great at explaining things too. Thanks to all! Hoping we can get there before the NHR runs out. Really bummed about this change.

The examples provided by Duarte in regards to effective tax rates seem to contradict various online calculators as well as other voices. The effective tax rate for an income of 70.000€ is much higher than 30-35%. On top of that are various other expenses I guess (social security, etc.).
Could you fact check that again?

I still don’t really understand it but ….if I earn my remote income from Saudi Arabia and pay no tax (as we sacrifice a lot more in lifestyle) - once that money lands in my Portugal bank (to prove my income for the D8 visa) then Portugal will tax that money above 33%. Wow. If that’s true then Portugal is no longer an option as I could not morally let them steal my money like that. I think I’m not understanding this as it sounds crazy.

In the US, the first $250K of capital gains on the sale of a primary residence is tax exempt in the US (provided the tax payer has lived in the residence for 2 or of the past 5 years)...
Without the NHR, would that first $250K that is exempt in the US, also be exempt in PT or would it be taxed in Portugal?
    Thanks
