Back then it wasn't so much about ratings, given that AJPW had a weekly show at midnight. The problem was that All Japan's first tour with Kawada as champion was, financially, one of the worst in company history. Ironically, it wasn't because Kawada was the champion, but it was mostly because of All Japan's repetitive product and Misawa being out of action due to injury, which is why management decided to put the belt on Kobashi as a way to freshen the product. However, that tour made it crystal clear that, in Giant Baba's eyes, Misawa was still the top star, but now Kobashi had taken over as the 2nd top guy, with Kawada being demoted to 3rd option and basically the antagonist.
