I have a competition 5 series. The controller died in the middle of a cook. My controller was a Bluetooth with 5 degree increments. The guy at pit boss said they were on back order so he sent me the older version along with the blue tooth controller they arrived together at no charge. Now I have a backup controller if I need it. The controller going out after only a year was bad but pitboss made it right. Gotta love a company that will stand behind their products. Now smoke us a brisket low and slow at 275 sir 👍
My Bluetooth won't hook up, soI have to replace my control panel also, AND seems like will have to do the BackOrder waiting game also. Grrrrr!!!! How did you get the Grate for the pellet hopper out? The furthest left side screw will not come out regardless of what screwdrivers I've been using. I love the videos bro!!!
The person that gave me mine for some reason bought the Lowe's extended warranty also,so when I wanted the new control panel I went to Lowes and they had one of the new ones and gave it to me. I have found i still get a 20° difference but it varies throughout the cook chamber from 20°-30°. I have just learned to live with it.

Watched last night. I’ve been waiting for a replacement myself (the smoker was my Christmas gift and the control panel was damaged somewhere in shipping). Today I got an email that mine is on its way! If ever there was a more timely video posted, yours beats them all - a heads-up that the shipment arrived and the instructions on how to swap out the panel!
The new panel arrived the day after my post. My daughter Sarah and I installed it the following evening. A couple of points I’ll add… After removing the original panel, we found connecting the new controller less tedious by replacing the metal cover (inside the pellet hopper) first. Make sure the wires are in place before replacing the screws. Now the new panel can be connected and snapped into place. We noticed the new panel rattled in cabinet and it wasn’t until I took the old panel apart (just to have a look see at the PCBs) that I noticed the old panel had a rubber gasket around the bezel. DOH! Once again removed the control panel, replaced the metal cover, and installed the rubber gasket on the new panel. NOTE: there are two slots on each side of this gasket- they are there to clear two ribs on each side of the bezel. Make sure you position them to sit directly over the ribs so the gasket seats flat against the edges of the bezel. Once again we connected the wires and thermometer lead and snapped the controller back into place. No more rattles.
I have just replaced my control panel recently. Ran my smoker for 1.5 weeks and the thing went down. Had to wait until the back ordered panels came in. Got it last week. I hope this is not going to be a reoccurring issue. I love my smoker, but since I purchased it just before Christmas it has broke down on me 2 times. Pit Boss was very good about sending out the parts, but it sucks when something you enjoy starts having issues. My auger only lasted 2 days, the probe that came with the unit made it 1 week, and then the control board took a dump back in January.
What have you found the temperature variation to be? I’ve heard it can be as much as 30 degrees. Have you ever considered an alternative controller live the Savannah Stoker?
30 degrees is about right. Same as an off set. Temp will always vary with convection cookers. I’ve not considered alternative controllers but I have heard of the Stoker. I’ve heard good things.
I'm a 73 year old weakling woman. If I can do it anyone can. Watched a lot of videos like yours then went in. Once I had it taken apart, there was no turning back. Truth disclosure, my husband did help me turning it on it's sides as needed.
I have the same issue not achieving my temp I set itat. My only question do I ask for temp probe as well as the controller or will the controller fix my issue?
I found that if you start the smoker and then crank it all the way up and run till it gets up all the way then back down to what temp you want and will be more steady and where you set it.
I've been watching you for a long long time. I've been waiting for this video. I told it about this controller months and months ago. I put mine in way last summer. It works great and you should be able to use Smoke IT app. If it wasn't for the fact i found jerky racks to fit mu Series 3 I wouldn't have given it to my granddaughter. I just wish Pit Boss would quit inventing new grills and develop a controller like this for the series 3. I think you will love it.

Pitboss is great. One button press - and you are on the phone with a live support person. You cannot beat that. As frustrating as it has been... I am making good BBQ still - and I feel pitboss has our backs. (... at least for 5 years... Haha)
All the newer units have more precise temperature settings. You can always double check with Pit Boss but I’m pretty sure. Thanks for watching! Smoke on!!!
Great stuff Zac, I'm not sure it will help your temp swings but at least you have the newer model with the 10 degree increments. I have the same one and I find I have to set it to 260F to get an actual 225F. It's funny, I did a smaller brisket the other day and ran low on pellets so I fired up the Weber kettle and used the snake method. Held solid as a rock at 275F, barely had to check or adjust any vents. I think I spend more time stuffing around with my pellet smoker haha That's not the way it's supposed to work lol

Is this new controller on this model in the store? Or you think they still have the old controller on them? The new model says it's Bluetooth and WiFi. I'd assume you can set the temp in the app right?
Are you able to adjust the temp from control panel while also being logged in on app? Once I setup the app I can’t change temp from the control panel anymore.
I have both the PBV5V1 & V2! The V1 is a workhorse and has had a few components changed out over 5 years, but within reason. The new V2 computer controller was messed up out the gate! Ran my Weber igrill grate probe and it was about 100 degrees off (which caused a fire one day)! Call with PATIENCE as the customer reps were rude and condescending, as if I haven’t been cooking 12+ years. I love these vertical grills but customer service stinks👎🏾
I hear both good and bad reports with their customer service. It depends on who you get. Next time ask them their name and hang up. Call back and make sure to get someone else. I’ve only had good experiences, personally.
Aaron Franklin's method has never worked as well, for me. I've knocked him way out of the park so many times with the hot an fast method. Weird but I don't think he's totally honest with his method to the public.

I have found i still get a 20° difference but it varies throughout the cook chamber from 20°-30°.
I have just learned to live with it.

Is the net plate, located at the top of the hopper and held in place by 6 or 8 screws, necessary for the grill to work poperly?
That’s a negative. I can only assume it is a failsafe. I removed mine long ago.

I can’t say what will fix your smoker. I replaced thermostat then control panel before mine got to acting normal.
I found that if you start the smoker and then crank it all the way up and run till it gets up all the way then back down to what temp you want and will be more steady and where you set it.
Solid technique. I use it often. Especially if it’s cold out

Back order? I called customer service and had one in my hands two days later but that's up here in Canada.
I’m guessing when they got mine, they also got yours. Not sure though. All I know is they didn’t have one. I called them every 2-3 weeks.

Slightly. Not much though. However, if my unit sat in the elements, I would be sealing it off better.
So what I found out is you need to take off the rubber gasket off of the old one and put it on the new one.
Someone in my Facebook group, American Smoke Carnivores, shared that same information.

I never had that problem but the old version of the app was so terrible that I quit using it completely
