    I don’t think they’re angry at him just because they’re projecting. They’re angry because he’s being rude. He’s overstepping boundaries and humiliating people in front of their friends. Like “hey everyone, Chandler has childhood trauma that has made him emotionally stunted.” Or the thing with Monica and the cookies? That’s so condescending. Just let her eat a cookie without it becoming some big comment on her psyche. Basically I think saying that they’re just mad at him because they’re projecting invalidates the legitimate anger they have at him for acting completely inappropriately.

      Yeah like I feel like everything this guy does violetes several ethical codes. Like I'm pretty a psychiatrist should regulate what issues they open up so they have time to unpack everything with their patient and then repack before the end of the session. Not just open up major emotional issues and just leave to watch a movie. Also, what about this thing called informed consent. I'm training to become a personal trainer and if I want to train someone I have to have their informed consent on what that involves so my client knows what they're getting into. Here the guy just starts analysing people without their permission and then voicing his opinions out loud. Which is another thing, what's a patients right to privacy?
      I feel like if a genuine psychiatrist went around doing this stuff they could get in legitimate trouble. For similar reasons that doctors will get in trouble for providing unofficial diagnoses and treatment in their spare time.

    I don't think they're transferring their anger at all. They are a mess, but they had legitimate reasons to detest him. He comes into their circle, and as you pointed out, dropped mental health and emotional bombs. Even as a guest in their homes. Besides being a dick move, how can that be ethical?

    • @Byvenic
      @Byvenic 3 года назад +9

      There's always a chance that he himself suffers from a personality disorder or something of the like. Something that makes him tend to be blind to societal cues. It's not uncommon but also something you'd expect a doctor of his type would have some understanding of and hopefully at his age have strategies to help him pick up cues he may have missed.
      However like Dr Elliot said, he seems to enjoy pouring fuel on the flames and watching the explosion. Which would point to an entirely different area of mental health I guess.

    This might be a US v. UK thing, but I'm a bit surprised that you didn't mention that Roger is essentially performing therapy on people who have not consented to it (or in the case of Ross and Rachel, who may have chosen to talk with him, they haven't done so with informed consent). In the US, that is a *MASSIVE* ethical violation of every professional ethics code out there (in Roger's case, likely either AMA or APA). He's also not done any proper intake, etc. (which, while not directly an ethical issue, could indirectly be since it leaves him unprepared to provide his highest standard of care, which *is* an ethical violation since it's not acting in the best interest of the client/patient).
    All those rules requiring therapeutic practice to be undertaken with informed consent, in a professional setting, and with professional boundaries in place exist specifically because the sort of 'off the cuff' analysis in the episode can be incredibly harmful (for any number of reasons - one clearly displayed in the episode being that the erstwhile client/patient is then left without the necessary support in follow up). It's obviously a sitcom, but his behavior is actually shockingly irresponsible.

    I have always thought that the patient mentioned in the beginning was a reference to "The Man Who Mistook His Wife For a Hat" , which was popular just a few years before. Especially because it is phrased as the patient thinking that "things ARE other things" , rather than it being an OCD trigger of some sort.

    1:50 that’s not necessarily true, since the fetuses brain starts to dream at around six months. And over time the baby starts laughing to form memories of the outside world and of their mother. Typically they form attachments to their mother’s heartbeat as it can be soothing when steady and their voice if they read and/or sing to them regularly.
    So they already have some form of emotional bind with their (birth) mother when they are born. So they know them more than just a pair of boobs that come and go
    Just take what I see with a grain of salt as I only get a little of bit of info from bits and pieces I’ve read. I am in no way an expert on any of this

    One thing that always surprises me with scripted productions is the depth of knowledge that screenwriters seem to have across a seemingly never-ending variety of subjects which In this case is psychiatry. I am guessing that the treatment of the subject is cursory enough to not require the services of specialist consultant. What do you reckon? Have you ever thought of providing your services to a given industry as a specialist consult outside of the NHS?

    • @DoctorElliottCarthy
      @DoctorElliottCarthy  3 года назад +5

      Most TV shows will consult with people in the field on things like this. Medical dramas have resident doctors that help form the stories and scripts though that doesnt stop the tendency to embellish the truth (House would be a prime example of this)

    I disagree with the "projection" analysis. Of course that can play a part, but if someone spoke to me about my problems like that it would make me extremely angry. Its belittling and minimises problems. I have a lot of trauma and if he spoke to me like that, I wouldn't feel angry at myself even subconsciously. It reminds me of Mrs. Hoffstater (idk spelling) from the big bang theory. She and Rodger know all the psychological backing but their relationships with others are not appropriate for the field.

    At least in the US a psychiatrist can talk about cases as long as the patient remains confidential. Most psychiatrists in the US will barely even acknowledge one of their patients if they run into them somewhere to protect the patient’s ambiguity, unless the patient acknowledges the psychiatrist. But that’s true of most medical doctors, not just psychiatrists. A gynecologist can’t go around telling people that you have an STD.

Then chandler had his parents divorce plus his father openly having sexual relationships with men while still married to his mother and then being a cross dresser and possibly trans in later episodes.

    I get this is doctor reacts, but you gotta look at this not from a doctors perspective cause they didnt seek him out in professional setting, they’re in a cafe and their own home thinking they’re just gonna be hanging out with their friends new beau and suddenly he is drudging up issues they’ve managed in their own ways and than abandons them with no actual healthy coping mechanisms or even decent advice. “Dont eat your feelings Monica” yea like she hasnt already been told that by every bully in school.
    I think they truly do hate him and i believe they have every right to. He came in brought trauma to the surface, enjoyed the chaos he caused and left without actually helping them.

    The boobies thing is funny because since this was season one the creators were still trying to decide if Chandler was going to turn out to be gay or not.

    I loved friends as a kid lol and thought Roj was awful. I've always wanted to go to therapy but I'm not really sure how to go about it and I definitely can't afford private care. I have had full body chronic pain starting when I was 7 years old and have struggled with mental health issues relating to that since I was about 11. My GP basically just stuck me on sertraline which helps a bit but I still really struggle sometimes. Oh well I'll just have to cope.

      Have you heard of the Curable app? My friend who has suffered with horrendous migraines for years uses the free version and says it has reduced her pain by 50% after using it for a month 🌻

    I guess analyzing a few episodes from " Mind Hunter'" could be a good idea but that would also be a bit uncomfortable to watch.

    I think a really interesting film for Dr. Carthy to see and react to is "American Mary". A film about extreme body modification and objectification of women. I would call it stunning, as I was completely stunned multiple times during the movie. How far can revenge go? Pretty damn far.

    Hey, I think that guy also played a psychiatrist or psychologist on Frasier. He came over to test if Daphne had any sort of psychic abilities.
