How to Buzz a Trumpet Mouthpiece

In this video I talk about how to teach a beginning trumpet player to buzz The mouthpiece on trumpet. I have received questions from band directors on how to do this because they typically do not play brass as a primary instrument. Buzzing the mouthpiece can be a challenging thing to teach in private lessons but this video may help you.
It is important to note that some students will be able to buzz the mouthpiece while other students will not be able to buzz the mouthpiece. Both are OK! Just remember to meet the student where they are and help them grow from where they are.
If you have any questions or comments please write them here. Thank you for all of your comments and questions on the other videos!

Don't waste time, start now developing your embouchure. It takes years to develop so start now. You can also play sax like Benny Carter and Mario Bauza who played both well. And play piano or guitar so you can study harmony.

To sum it up here is my version on how to buzz
    0.5. lick your lips
    1. Fold your lips inward
    2. Curve your side of your lips like if you are going to smile
    3. Make a super small hole in your lips
    4. Blow

On my third day of free buzzing I manage to buzz with some focus, even though the start is always stuttery. And of course I can't change the pitch. Only wiht mouthpiece I manage that haha, but I feel like I'm doing something already, which is great!
So again, thank you very much and greetings from the other side of the planet.

I had missed my schools offered beginner band class through all of my middle school, and now im in high school. I've recently told my schools band director that I would like to join for my junior year, but she said id have to learn on my own and be somewhat competent in HS band and that i wouldn't be able to go back to 6th, 7th, or 8th grade band. (A little backstory,) My mother was first chair in almost all of the instruments she played through all of her HS years even after her first brain surgery (which happened in her 8th grade year.) I eventually convinced her to find her trumpet for me to learn over the summer. She could remember how to play herself, but couldn't remember how to teach me properly. I have musical talent literally running through my blood, but I only took time to learn piano. I am also a gifted singer, but that only gets you so far with like musical theater and choir. Anyways, the point of this was to thank you for making this video. It really helped me create the right mouth formations. ❤

Hey Bro. I have been playing trumpet 30 years. I can play fairly well. For years great Trumpet players that scream have told me to pronounce the letter "M" but that's all they said and I didn't get it but after I saw your video, I started pronouncing the letter "M" blowing and backing off pressure. Fooling around with this for about 5 minutes, all of a sudden I hit the sweet spot and I had this huge fat sound up and down the register. Got to say I Was shocked. I think the air stream and correct positioning is the Ticket. Awesome video. Thanks for the help. You never know how you may help someone along life's way! Good job. Sincerely Mark.

Hi Chris Davis , you idea of pronouncing the Letter M is indeed great ..ask any dentist who makes dentures ,they would always ask the patient to pronounce the Letter M to determine the vertical height and the rest position of the jaws ..which you have probably knowingly or unknowingly incorporated into your buzzing video ...this is brilliant !!!. I happened to see another video where the guy didn't believe in saying M for getting the buzz ..in his video he was talking about how much gap should be between the upper and lower jaw ..actually when you say M you automatically get the required gap between the two jaws and you also align your lip muscles in their natural position to get a buzz. It is indeed a good reference point for a beginner .thank you so much .

(You remind me of my best friend. He's about your age and is a med tech in a hospital. ( Y'all have the same good heart! )
I played guitar all of my life till my profession tore my wrists up and I had to have Carpal Tunnel surgery, Both wrists !!! I lost the tips of my fingers...they're still attached but I can no longer pick up change nor little parts and such. I also, CAN'T play my guitars! I never went anywhere without one. I was a volunteer Fireman & rescue and I had my guitar! After the surgery, I never coukd play again, and I loved playing music. I spied a Harbor Freight Bugle, hangung on the wall, so I set out to play it. I figured, since my balance was shot because of my age, and the use of my fingers was kaput..., I said, I've still got LIPS, lets blow a Bugle. After months of trying, my Bugle sounded more like a ticked-off Elephant, than a trumpet. I have watched RUclips videos till my eyeballs just about froze up. I found you, tonight and have something NEW to try. Thank You!

Nice tip!!! I have 13 years on flute and piccolo, now i wanna to play a trumpet because is so beautiful. Your video is very helpful. But i have difficult to reach all the harmonics since i only can play the low C and the G. Greatings from Brazil!!!

Hi Tarik! You've got a great start if you can play those two notes, really! Keep playing them until your strength builds up and you'll end up playing the next C above! Subscribe to the channel here because I'm going to be doing live chats. I'll be able to talk about this further with you!

5 years ago! Well I hope its been a good 5 years. thanks for this. i'm sure it is going to help. brand new trick. mainly you've taken all the drama out of it for me - all the other stuff I've looked at is saying do this and do that and has me trying incredible hard and getting nowhere..
just one vid they said it should be a relaxed and easy thing.
my mouth doesn't seem to want to do a 'buzz' and the air doesn't come out of one central aperture - it comes out kinda 'flat' like coming out of a slot, not a round hole.
    screws me right up.
but somehow this little vid makes me feel entirely more assured and confident. I'll crack it. thanks. :)
You know I have one question no one really answers, not even this one.
And it is this: how important to say 'M' and not say 'Pooh' ?
I think major important but I don't know.
I find it pretty easy to make a sound, a buzz, with 'pooh' - the mouth like it would be if blowing through a straw.
But with 'M' much harder. Impossible right now. :)

Dear Chris, thank you for a very instructive and helpful video! I was actually looking for embouchure tips for a cornet (I mean the wind instrument of the 16th and 17th centuries used in renaissance and early baroque music, Zink in german), and your video appeared. With the aid of your video I practiced buzzing, and also afterwards with tubes of various lenghts and diameters and managed to get an idea. However, would you have perhaps any tips on how to practice buzzing on the quite much smaller mouthpieces of these early wind instruments, cornets, tenor cornets and maybe serpents too? Thanks again, and all the best!

Hi Petri! I learned to play on cornet years ago but am not familiar with the early instruments you speak of. I would imagine that the concepts are the same. I'll look into this though and see if I can get my hands on these instruments.

As G. Spence suggest, it is ok to buzz only on lead pipe because lips oscilates as a result of air resistance.

Tuba is different because it’s so much bigger. Let the lips really flap in side the mouthpiece.

    • @ChrisDavisTrumpet

Don’t try to control it at first. Just really let the lips go.
