I wore the leather occidental 7 bag framer set up for years. It was heavy and would dig into my hips. I recently switched to diamondback grandes and like them more. Way lighter, more comfortable, and customizable. The hammer sheath is a lot more convenient and doesn’t hurt my shoulder reaching behind me all day to grab my hammer like the Occidental’s.
If you are going to get a leather set up go with Akribis. A had and occidental set for 12 years before I had to replace them. I went with Akribis and they are built better and the layout is so well thought out
I actually have a new setup that I picked up from Colorado! It’s an Akribis belt and a back pouch. With 2 Occi pouches on each side. I absolutely love the Akribis part. Leather is super good quality!
I also had one of those milwaukee knives that was sentimental to me. I used it for electrical work for years, then one day I helped my dad cut some wet carpet in his house and it snapped in the thin area where the blades go.
used to work for estwing as a finisher. ran a 12' (ft not inches) double spindle belt sander mfg in 1909 to grind tools to their final shape/dimension/beveled the heads, sharpened the claws, ground the diamond spline along the hammer neck, swapped wheels and put the twist around the barrel between the head and claws, eased all the edges/spine, swapped out wheels and belts and polished up to a mirror finish and all that. good stuff. final stop before laquer and QC. as a framer (work as a trim/finish carpenter now) i ran a vaughan axe handle or a rigger if i ate my wheaties because hickory is king, but theres some badass hammers estwing makes that id take over martinez. check out the estwing ultra series. they're steel, but its got a side head nail puller like martinez and comes either milled (waffle), smooth, 19oz or 15oz, long or short handle, blue or black finish, rubber or stacked leather grip. E19sm i think is the black leather milled model no. theres another badass hammer we made thats aluminum with a steel head and claws with a counterbored lead shot capsule inside the head. wicked little hammer. feels like a stilletto or dalluge titanium had kids with an old stanley dead blow. makes a 20 penny feel like a 23 guage pin. i think those were model no. albkm or alblm.
I've had some Occidental Leather OxiLite framers since 2016 and I love them! Comfortable, adjustable, and every tool has its home. With some nice open pockets. Only downside is the belt is fairly narrow, so suspenders are almost required.
I’ve had a diamondback and an occidental belt rig. My opinion after using both is that diamondback is hype and cool. Occidental is by far a superior product. I use the same suspenders and I don’t know how I lived without them.
Love the name bro! I'm running a set of occidental leathers right now have been for the last two years. Really been thinking about buying a diamond back rig here lately. Also love your channel man!
same here ! i love the oxy lights i currently have a DB belt and love it but they are bulky!! especially when setting trusses and or sheathing the roof ! we have to be tied off so harness plus big pouches isn’t the greatest.. im thinking of getting a set just for trusses/sheathing roof im ready to check out but can’t get convinced
I had a set of diamond back grandes for about a week. Put them on eBay,I couldn't stand their stuff but some people like it. Even the grandes the pockets were small and not enough of them ...I think you would like the occidentals if you got some. I have three sets of the adjusta fits .The belts don't slide around is the reason I like them, I'm definitely a toolaholic. I buy new stuff then if I don't like it I put it on eBay and try something different. I'm 51 you'd think I'd be over that by now 😂🤣😅
@@certifiedladderholder yeah I love tools, I'm not a hammer collector though. I have a stiletto that hangs on my pole barn wall. I carry an old leather, handled Estwing everyday
I have the same exact bag set up except, I just use the hammer holster! Thinking about getting the Elias for my dominant side (Lefty) Bang on brother💪🏻🔨
I bought one of those a while ago my man. It was awesome because you could see the lead on almost anything you wrote on. But the downside for me was I kept breaking the lead and running out of it. Easier to just use the buttload of pencils our lumberyard supplies us with👍
Any idea the weight difference between a Diamondback and leather pouch setup? I’m thinking about ordering a akribis setup but I feel like it could be heavy
I was told by some buddies that the leather pouches are quite a bit heavier than diamondbacks. I just picked myself up an occidental that’s mostly canvas and a little bit of leather. Feels about the same as the diamondbacks👍
This is the cats paw I personally have. It’s a 12”. I love the size because it gives me a lot of room to really hammer and pry on the thing. 2 guys on our crew have the smaller ones but it just depends on what you like.
Sick rig brotha, love my occidental, my only suggestion is a tajima or Milwaukee chalk box. Oh and throw that M1 away and stick to the stiletto hahaha all jokes, respect to you
Questions - 1) what do you use a chisel for? I see this in a lot of framing videos but no one on the crew i work for has one at hand and we never use them? 2) the clip for valley chalk lines, can you link / make 1-2 min video of you using it?
Love it man keep the questions coming! For the chisel, I always seem to use it. Notching posts for a deck, cleaning up a cut. Skip to 13:18 in this wall framing video I put up awhile ago, it shows me using it to notch out for an lvl beam. ruclips.net/video/kn6Ro1WJqW8/видео.html
For the chalk line question, ruclips.net/video/DAbXLjIWjKs/видео.html skip to 10:56. I use the V-Line clamp to cut a wall sheet on a rake. Great tool. No one on my crew seems to like it but I love it. You can clip your chalkline so fast and pull any valley angle you wish in seconds. www.amazon.com/V-Line-Clamp-Measure-Chalk-Holder/dp/B008L1F4II/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?crid=32L2HPEJITLH0&keywords=v+line+clamp&qid=1659838967&sprefix=v+line+clamp%2Caps%2C285&sr=8-2

@@certifiedladderholder ohhhh, cut cleanup on a sloppy circular cut...definitly been there, we arent perfect and its a hard game once you have that tiny section thats a 1/16th off... end up taking an 8th and leaving ANOTHER tiny 1/16 bump on other side ha.

Tried them before. Kept breaking the plastic handles and it seemed like the line was too thin sometimes. It did feel the best though don’t get me wrong
If you go occidental do yourself a favour and get the finisher bags not all leather a little lighter you won't regret the square holder never falls out
Right on! If I'm up high I just turn my square forward so the heel is facing the front of the pouch and it locks in. I actually like it more than other brands because you can throw it back faster. There are two holes for the cats paw. One fits the stabila torpedo level and the second more folded in one fits the nail bar much better (but I mostly use the bar sleeve). If you wrap some electrical tape around the bottom of the ti-bone Stiletto it slides in and out of the hammer sleeve a little better but I've leaned towards a wood handle when using hammer sleeve and that's just fine with me.

Get the diamond back flat bar holster works great for a cats paw
Try Occidental Lights and when Australia reopens, buy the Buckaroo wider belt with the shoulder straps.

invest in tajima chalk line you will never look back.
make a little cut with the saw no need for clips or nails when cutting osb
