I love Michael Mann's depiction of LA, both, in Heat and Collateral, but i wish he could stick either with film stock or digitial not combining it and switching between.
A really elegant film, the scenes with DeNiro really sets this nice ambiance. Epic action scenes. You can tell Nolan studied this film and was influenced by it.
Even though we couldn't see him, I'm sure Nolan was squirming and cringing when Dante Spinotti was gushing about digital. He wanted to strangle him with reels of film.
"Trying to find places that speak to you" And for that, Mann personally spent half a year every night wandering around LA. No wonder, HEAT is the best LA movie.
Fascinating hearing about the very considered choices of director & cinematographer. They really have a great feel for the atmospherics of LA and how important it is to convey that to the audience.
During that time, he was diagnosed with throat cancer, so he couldn't speak like a normal guy, even until today. I hope his voice will be better soon with the AI technology
Really can't wait to see how well the new transfer comes off. Spinotti is right, it didn't really need it because the existing Blu-ray looks fabulous to me but regardless of that I am excited.
TheRantingBoy William_Friedkin directed it although I thought the day-time shots were magnificent.William Dafoe was creepy good in that role.very underrated film for its time.
2:45 So If I'm understanding it, he shot the scene of the actors with the background blocked out. Then shot the scene at a slow frame rate, so the film had a higher exposure rate to compensate for the lack of light.
Cinematographer Dante Spinotti straight up took a shot at Nolan's complete defense for film, ouch! Appreciate Nolan being a gentleman, he didn't fire back, which I think is wonderful coz it's about the movie and nothing else.
Defense for film is dead when digital intermediate DI born and It's a free country...He was sarcastic ...Dante fight for hd with a competent technical point of view, despite Nolan he knows how deal with digital with great results.. Did you seen what he done with Deception?
I'm so glad he didn't shoot Heat completely with that digital intermediate garbage like he did with Collateral and Miami Vice. That looked like early RUclips hand held videos. Film is pristine.
@@totalbliss1 Haha RUclips, I agree with you to a limit but it fits the films tone, Manns a master. That said, Digital wasn't an option back in 1994/95, first digital colouring on film was done in 1999/2000 (O Brother, Where Art Thou?).
That seemed like a bit of a dig by Dante Spinotti at Nolan beating the film-always-forever drum at 0:35 onwards. "New technology, new technology, new technology!" Yikes.
The is an edit/omission on 1:30" where Nolan disagrees with Dante on the digital restoration being actually better than the film print. It is intact in the whole conversation version of the discussion. Dante goes even as far telling Nolan that film is for the cave age. Thankfully Nolan was polite. Dante...we love you for lighting this masterpiece but digital has nothing on film. Almost 30 years later and Heat looks even better. Can't say the same with Public Enemies. Mann's career never recovered aesthetically after Ali.
that's not the point if it's done RIGHT digital is amazing and Heat is the proof. you can't say digital sucks or film sucks because both are great. You wouldn't have Avatar without digital.
Ikjyot Singh Kohli i agree it's a mediocre movie with a cliche story, but u can't deny that it was technologically evolutionary and that was because it was done with Digital, you wouldn't be able to do that with FIlm.
Unusual Mind Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was technologically evolutionary, don't know what was technologically different in Avatar that George Lucas hadn't already done in AOTC.
Ikjyot Singh Kohli i don't think u get the point, but well if u want an example ill give u one: Motion Capture in Avatar and it was done Digitally go watch behind the scenes of Avatar and you'll see. What im trying to tell you is that Digital is important to film making as much as Film is but i won't argue anymore if you think "Digital Sucks" that's your opinion and everyone has an opinion.
No one captures the cultural, ethnic, and social nuances of Los Angeles like Michael Mann. IMO, he is unrivaled, in that respect.
I love Michael Mann's depiction of LA, both, in Heat and Collateral, but i wish he could stick either with film stock or digitial not combining it and switching between.
@@iforgotthenamemate Good point!
Curtis Hanson did a good job too with LA Confidential, but that was more of a historical look vs Heat’s modern take
Right.
The tone made it so atmospheric
Kubrick was a big influence on Mann and it shows most in Heat. He even used Ligeti during the night-vision scene.
Totally agree

Lol facts
LOL yeah I was surprised when he said that
I was thinking the same thing 🤣. I'm sure Tarantino said a million expletives if he ever saw this and heard that.
A masterpiece of a movie.
Heat is an absolute masterpiece
"Trying to find places that speak to you"

Insane amount of talent in one room…
Amy Brenneman, damn, she's still got it!
Still fit as fu**
I could hear Michael Mann talk about filmmaking for hours on end.
Miami Vice movie sucks though fr admit it
When does Val speak? His character was one of my favorites in that movie.
During that time, he was diagnosed with throat cancer, so he couldn't speak like a normal guy, even until today. I hope his voice will be better soon with the AI technology
@@joshuakodrat He spoke although not well in the full interview version right around the 31 minute mark. He was clearly suffering from the cancer.
@@totalbliss1 yes, and his voice, oh man. I can't watch when he was done it for the last several years
Agree, among the most scenically captivating scenes are the Amy Brennan and Robert De Niro scene and the last scene at the airport.
Werner Herzogs English is getting better every year.
Henry Jones which one was Wernor? He was cinematographer on this??
You guys are funny!
This movie is such a vibe.
Yup LA CRIME REAL AMERICA
Shot in 95 locations.... Amazing within only 107 days, just over 3 months. Essentially, no time off.
The music or soundtrack he puts to the scenes makes them so memorable, Moby for instance
The sky in this movie looks great morning noon and night
Great job, Dante!
de niro always looks like he about to fall asleep
yes he looks like he wants to be reading a book at home☺ anywhere but there
He's very shy
🤣🤣

Who cares, a good reason to watch a masterpiece like Heat in the cinema :)
If it does get a one-night only type release nationwide I'll be on that for sure.
To Live And Die in L.A is the other movie I'd argue shows L.A in a unique way.
TheRantingBoy William_Friedkin directed it although I thought the day-time shots were magnificent.William Dafoe was creepy good in that role.very underrated film for its time.
So underrated. A MASTERPIECE. The good guys are as ruthless as the bad guys.
Criminally under rated movie.
Michael Mann tried to sue William Friedkin for that as a rip off of Miami Vice. They are still friends.
2:45 So If I'm understanding it, he shot the scene of the actors with the background blocked out. Then shot the scene at a slow frame rate, so the film had a higher exposure rate to compensate for the lack of light.
Classic movie, my best movie
Mann should have included more comments like these on his director's commentary.
New restoration? Hooray! Hopefully they'll release this on Blu-Ray soon (and put back the "detritus" line they cut from the last Blu-Ray).
Yes, Fox is releasing it as opposed to Warner Brothers. Fox has the rights to all the films released under the Regency banner.
Agreed, I hated that line being removed. It was a great scene as is.
What scene are you talking about?

Riiiiight.......
You need to get some perspective on life and think about what you just said. Have a nice day.
Stijn van Kralingen kids these days lol
oh Pierre..... that was awkward
3 frames par seconds? AMAZING
No film maker captures los angeles like michael mann
Where is Val and Trejo??
Val is there, the third from the left when the camera goes wide. Danny Trejo's not there.
And sizemore and Natalie Portman
Where is Roger van Zant?
Oh wait he's a dead man
How to watch full show

Is this being re-released in theaters?
Don't know but it should. So much crap movies out today.
Beeastman123: It definitely should.
I would love to have seen Val Kilmer working with Chris Nolan.
Well, that green screen footage didn't age well in my opinion. You can clearly see it on Blu Ray and 4K disc and it breaks the immersion for me.
Could you give the precise time stamp of that scene?
@@roneystapes it is the balcony scene at the beginning of the movie. Amy and robert are in it.
I admire Nolan but he thinks too much (I think) 😂
Diane Venora is still really hot.
I always felt something was off with that terrace scene. I don't like how that scene looks. Now I know why.
Haha balls of steel in every brain in the room

There are a few out there who cares. I know because I was first one time and they told me to get a life....
