Nolan interviewing Mann, De Niro and Pacino about the movie "Heat". Can life get any better?
Even better if they could collaborate on a project.
@ad what do you mean ?
@ad I was just thinking the same
some actors like these two wop hams should retire especially deniro whos lost is freaking mind
@@gkroll8467 Finally some said it out loud. I used to love and respect de Niro, but not anymore. He should definitely retire and not act or giving interviews
It's cute that the Oscars are posting this video, considering Heat was completely snubbed for any nominations.
“Cute” or ironic?
@@Churro_Flaminguez and politics
I’m still waiting on Angela Bassett’s Oscar.
Oscar is garbage....the good the bad and the ugly theme and scores dint win Oscar...what a shame...
Oscar doesn't deserve a great movie like 'Heat'...
The Dark Knight is like Nolan's tribute to Heat.
Really?
Yup
Now that I think about it it does make sense.
The interrogation scene between Batman and the Joker is shot the same way as this scene.
dale r yup and the bank robbery at the start of the film is similar as is the overall look and tone of the film.
This is gold. We have three of the biggest legends of cinema, interviewed by a great fan of their work who happens to be one of the best directors of his generations himself.
and not to mention the famous scene from another cult movie you have on your dp...
Christopher Edward Nolan born 30 July 1970 is an English-American film director, screenwriter, producer, cinematographer and editor. He is one of the highest-grossing directors in history, and among the most successful and acclaimed filmmakers of the 21st century.
FloydPink23 when he directs movies like prestige Memento and inception and then we have people like you.. it's hard to say who's dumb and who's overrated..
Axxonn lol as much as Nolan is one of the best out there now, no way is interstellar a top 100 film lol
It's good we have Axxonn here everybody. I thought the plethora of praise that comes towards Nolan was real until an edgy hipster on youtube showed everyone the light.
This is one of the best films ever made. Nolan used the movie as a thematic template while making The Dark Knight
Christopher Nolan is - actually - a more complete director than Michael Mann, but Mann is a better action director than Nolan.
Anyway, great iconic scene.
Yep, he used the 1994 film "The Shadow" as the template for Batman Begins.
I like Nolan's work and his style but he's no Mann. Only Mann can get that kind of mood and feel out of a picture.
Absolutely...I kind of realised it just now..
Totally, talking about the interrogation scene between Batman and Joker in TDK, I mean Nolan literally said "I learned this from Heat."
That room should have exploded with all that talent and genius.
M Azzopardi that might have happened, but Micheal Bay wasn't there, so didn't.
@@adityanath3570 😂😂😂😂😂
Yup
Talent - Yes. But genius?
@@aimfuldrifter what do you think'bout Nolan
Michael Mann is one of the finest American filmmakers of his generation. It's a shame he didn't win an Oscar for best director. Heat, Collateral and The Insider were brilliant films.
Manhunter too
Last of the Mochicans has one of the best endings in movies
I’m one of the few that enjoyed Miami Vice as well. Something about those 3 movies you mentioned and Miami Vice that have a chill but intense vibe to them
Heat is a bonafide masterpiece. One of the few perfect movies
Nolan looks a bit like Val Kilmer in this 😂
jacob abraham at first I thought it was Val. LoL
@The Wizard of Oswald no shit sherlock

I love how Al Pacino doesn't even feel like he has to lift his mic up before he begins to talk. He never does. That's some deep voice right there.
Yes, it looked like swag 🤣
Well he is Lt Col Slade

Love his voice
A big contrast to his voice from Godfather.

@Amerul Aidil That's right he did. And that was also a VERY good VERY underrated film
I’m a Brit, when I went to LA for the first time, I went with my brother and we went to Kate Mantilini’ for lunch, so excited, we walked in and asked the host “where did they sit?”.The guy was very kind and sat us in the same spot. We were chuffed to bits! Thank you! Heat is still my favourite film and been a fan of Michael Mann since Miami Vice from the 80’s.
You’re so lucky, it’s not there anymore
whatta shame 💔
I love how Heat inspired the genius of Nolan.
And I love how real Neil McCauley inspired genius of Mann
@@antonelabakavic4045 And I love how PACINO (not your pwecious De Niro) was in TWO Mann movies.
"Things will never be 100% twice, they'll only be 100% once." Powerful!
One of the great filmquotes: “brother, You are goïng down....”
Best part of that scene for me was after Pacino says, " ...brother, I'm gonna have to put you down." Then the Deniro pause, and it might have been one of the greatest pauses in film history, he flashes a profile and, "...there's a flip side to that coin." I was floored.
Bingo
Senior paused and looked to his right to read his next line...he did it all through the scene.
Not senior...deniro...spell check got me.
"And what if you do got me boxed in, and i gotta put you down? I wont like it, but i will not hesitate. Not for a second."
“There’s a flip side to that coin”
Ummmm isn't this the same Academy that shunned the film and didn't nominate it for a single Oscar? Bunch of hypocrites.
I remember that year, 1995, the Academy completely shut out three of that year's best films: Michael Mann's "Heat" (De Niro, Pacino), Spike Lee's "Clockers" (produced by Scorsese, starring Harvey Keitel and John Turturro), and Martin Scorsese's "Casino" (De Niro, Pesci) ("Casino" received ONE nomination, but lost; the other two were completely ignored). They also largely ignored Oliver Stone's "Nixon", with Anthony Hopkins. They were so off, that year, as in many years.
Yeah they got it completely wrong that year
@@dkelly26666 I didn't know that about Casino, that is absolutely mind boggling to me.
@@dkelly26666 Sharon stone was the only oscar nom that year & lost, for Casino (Academy Awards 1996). Still got robbed if you think about the ridiculous movies that got nominated that year.

Heat is ABSOLUTELY one of the greatest films ever made, it is my all-time favorite just as it is for so many others out there, and yet it doesn't seem to get anywhere near the recognition and appreciation that it so richly deserves .. People out there who are relatively unfamiliar with Heat need to watch classic clips like this one to have a better understanding of just how epic this movie truly is 👌

I remember watching Heat and Casino back to back in the theaters 1995 then watching Goldeneye, lol

Heat was one of the most underrated movie by the academy
Most underrated movie of all time

No its not underrated by the discerning and knowledgeable like us
Not underrated by me.

Collateral by mann is more underrated
When Michael Mann talks about the anatomy of the scene, you can see why is such a master of his craft, understands everything about the nature of filmmaking
Just finished watching this movie. It is epic and one of the greatest movies of all time. The cinematography is brilliant, mesmerising, along with the soundtrack, it adds such a layer of atmosphere to the movie, unlike a lot of generic ones you hear in today's films. Truly great.
Now go watch The Insider (1999). Mann is great at creating atmosphere and depth.

I'm not a huge fan of superhero movies, although The Dark Knight might be the best one of that genre. But the very first time I watched The Dark Knight without knowing Nolan or any of his influences at all, all I could think of was "Heat" when I saw the way the city was shot in that movie.
Anyway, this video is very unique because Robert De Niro actually says something on his own without having to get every word dragged out of him, at 2:04 and 2:11. It should be in the national archive for this reason.
Craig Ellis Bad troll is bad? Nolan's "..Begins" was critically and financially an upset, praised by even most detractors of the superhero genre. So the sequel already had hype and expectations going into it. The Dark Knight was simply immortalized due to a combination of pushing the boundaries of both crime thrillers and comic based films, as well as the untimely passing of Ledger in what even you have to admit is one of the best written and then acted antagonists ever put to celluloid. It's a great film, overrated or not, and calling it a pile of crap is either ignorant or an attempt at trolling. People can dislike the film, it's subjective, and still acknowledge it's incredibly well made and certainly not pretentious.
Craig, lolnope
"SMH...you need to up your standards."
You just said that the original Tim Burton movie was the best Batman movie. And while I like the movie, you are suggesting that a movie in which Jack Nicholson dances to a terrible Prince song has higher standards of filmmaking.
"Joker has been done for years, all Ledger did was the steteotypical version of him."
Part of the reason why Ledger's Joker stood up was because of how vastly unique his version was compared to other versions. He had different voice, different speech patterns, different mannerisms, and different aesthetic all around. Not sure what was "steteotypical" about him.
"To make a character from nothing like Hopkins did with Hannibal Lector that takes real talent. Get a clue."
Hannibal Lector was already done by Brian Cox before Hopkins. So he didn't make the character from nothing. So you should get a better clue.
Ylysses432, "People who see these visual orgies as well-written dramas need to expand their menus when it comes to cinema."
I watch everything - from Marvel movie schlock to Dardanne brothers.
"You're either going to be an action film or a drama."
Tell that to Blade Runner and Saving Private Ryan.
"Words or weight can't land with any impact when they're crammed in between helicopter chases and explosions."
Which is why Matrix and Inception are considered one of the best modern movies ever made?
@Craig Ellis marvel fanboy alert
Guaranteed one the all time best movies.
Especially with the gun fights in city center. Val Kilmer Fucking ruled that shit
It's the first time that I see Robert De Niro speaking "so much" in an interview
Yes, he seems more animated than normal.
I like it how Nolan is asking profound questions that deeply examine the characters' actions and drive, and actors are like: they paid me and I acted
Legends, all of them.
Nolan is hardly a legend.
Nautilus1972 Well most people think otherwise
Sure he is. One of the few directors trying to make blockbusters and taking risks..

I don't get it either, Heat is probably one of the most referenced movies of all time, especially in games, like mentioned GTA V (in fact, the entire GTA series), Kane & Lynch...
Sure, maybe not really that much mentioned from the age range 15 to 25 (even if I fall in this range), but that it's because Heat itself hasn't that much Meme potential like, for example, Scarface.
i think he said underrated because this fucking films wasn't even nominated on the Oscars

Living Legends in the room. Chris Nolan, Bob DeNiro, Al Pacino, and Michael Mann. Beautiful movie, great scene!
A little disingenuous of The Oscars to host this retrospective, given that they didn't offer the film a single nomination in '96. Nothing. Not even a technical consideration...
In the end, while it might mean something to a lot in the industry, the Oscar's are meaningless and should be taken with a grain of salt. Much more at work there beyond films.
Take a look at what films were nominated that year. Based on that its quite understandable.

Every now and then a movie enters a different realm of perfection. This is one of them. Every actor, director, producer etc....were at their best.

Yeah, I don't blame Nolan geeking out. I would be too.
we don't get any Classics anymore... And heat is an all-time classic
It's not that we don't get classics anymore, it's just that it takes time for a film to become a classic. The old movies we see as classics today weren't classics as soon as they were released.
@@alexhughesxz there are instant classics tho. Like... the Dark Knight... ir more recently: Joker
@@cloudspigtails8076 The Dark Knight took a little time to become a classic. It wasn't instant. And I wouldn't say Joker is a classic.

Thanks for sharing this Oscars Channel with Two Great Actors, Al Pacino and Robert DeNiro from The Great Movie Heat with The Director Michael Mann from the Film while another Great Director Christopher Nolan interviewing all 3 of them!!!, How very Awesome!!!😃👏👏👏✌👍
Small thing: Somewhere out there there is a biography to Vincent from Collateral. Both McCauley and Vincent are dressed the same way. Such is Mann's attention to detail that there is an entire backstory to that character from his childhood to his military service and his time in special forces to his recruitment by cartels. I would love to see that.
in the commentary on the bluray of Heat, Mann notes that he had Neil wear a simple Grey suit white shirt to maintain a sense of blandness so it would be more difficult for a witness to describe him ect. I think he had the same idea for Vincent.
Pacino, Deniro both are Legends love them 👍
Michael Mann is such a underrated Director. That movie Thief was badass too. But hearing Pacino and DeNiro together is always pure gold.
It's amazing to see Christopher Nolan moderating the talk. Very good job.
When you are interviewing your hero's every word they say, whether it be mumbling or a deflated answer, is pure gold.
My favourite film is Goodfellas and my dream is to watch it with Martin Scorsese, Deniro, Pesci, Liotta, and have them talk to me about every details. In fact, if I ever came to be employed by Scorsese, I'd say screw the wages, I want a running commentry.
... Aaaand then the stage spontaneously caught fire from all the greatness present!
The coffee shop scene is when of the best filmed scenes...ever.

Robert De Niro looked very handsome in Heat than any other movies of his , Al's high pitch voice acting was a different level and equally appreciating other actors too and most important was the BGM and sound engineering TOP NOTCH. 👌👌👌
One of the best thing about Michael Mann's movies I've noticed is that this man shows the scene way it is like it's real happening in real for example -- that long shootout scene from heat and collateral..
For me heat is an underrated masterpiece audiovisual of the history of cinema
DeNiro trying to understand Christopher Nolan’s questions are like me trying to understand Tenet.
Tenet is really incredibly easy to understand. It's a very simple film. Did you really not understand it? What was confusing about it to you?
I think it's good Mann never used a two-shot of them. Would have felt a bit obvious. Glad someone had the good sense to take that photograph though.
Exactly
Christopher nolan is such a fan boy in this video, I love it
I always felt from the second Vincent and Neil sat at the table together they both envisioned shooting the other on the spot should the conversation go south. It's natural for them to not second guess the possibility that the other guy might just kill him. But Neil has worked too long and hard to plan the heist of a lifetime to take out the cop who is chasing him just because he is vulnerable sitting across from him. And Vincent knows this Neil is too professional and honors his own code to pop him right now, not his style, too cowboy. But they both know the truce that Vincent is trying to forge is really only a buffer for what awaits later in the day of the heist. They share that little smirk at the end too that says "I respect and understand that you ain't backing down from me." Maybe had this been a different lifetime they could have had the coffee without the guns. #Heat
That bond of mutual respect, of knowing that they are at the top of their game and yet, in the person opposite them they have met their equal. That's the magic in the movie.
Folks who got pissed that they held hands at the end just over-looked that under any other circumstances, they would be closer than brothers. Awesome film.
i remember watching this at the cinema when i was 15 or 16 years old. Completely blown away by the whole thing not only the action also the relationship among the characters.
Al Pacino is just so freaking humble, man!

IMHO this is the greatest dialogue scene ever filmed. Arguably the two most intense talented actors meeting as top in their respective roles (cops and robbers).

the master interviewing these legends about the one of the great classic movie 🔥🔥❤️❤️. the best ever interview I've ever seen .
What jumps out at me in the "coffee shop scene" is the display of diplomacy, and the two being civil with each other, despite being on opposite sides of the law. (What’s more diplomatic than having coffee with your nemesis?)
This was a chess match, a game of go, a match of wits. Neither of them wants to reach across the table or lunge at their opponent…they want to win the game, on the “board,” where it counts, mono-e-mono, legal strategy against criminal strategy; who is better at playing this “game,” who is better at their job?
De Niro looks sharp and lively for his age, especially compared to Pacino lol
Pacino hasn't aged as well as De Niro but his spirit and energy is just as strong.
pacino is actually a lot more passionate with acting that de niro is, especially lately. he never lost the fire and still loves both shakespeare & the theatre. maybe he's just tired?

R.D.N & A.P are my childhood dream chaser. God bless them 1000 years.
The smartest Decision from Michael Mann was, to keep this scene as simple as possible, so the energy of the scene was just delivered from these two Legends and goddamn the energy was there.
