    My truck is a 1990 Ford but being in Florida there is no salt to ruin the frame. I have the exact same needle scaler I was using on the rust on my Bobcat. Putting phosphoric acid after mechanical rust removal is always a good move. Removable parts go in my electrolysis tank for effortless rust and paint removal. Few people realize what a time consuming job this is. If I ever restore my truck I am going to disassemble the whole truck and use electrolysis on the whole frame. Good detailed step by step video and you look cool even without your headlamp!

    That’s what I was thinking that a gallon would probably cover two or more trucks. If the paint is that thin maybe you could have gotten a pump up garden sprayer and sprayed it into areas that the brush didn’t cover. 👍👍 on this project. I need to take the bed off of my 02 Tacoma and repair some damage. What I’m using right now is motor oil. To keep the rust down. ATF works good too. Garden sprayer. 😀

    • @DIYJIM

      Maybe I will have to try some oil or ATF so my truck will last a few more years. Thanks for watching

    Hey great work thank you for posting this up. A couple questions:
    Do you think a couple guys could lift the bed off? How much do you figure it weighs?
    What size compressor are you using for the needle gun? How did it work out with that size?

    • @DIYJIM
      @DIYJIM  10 месяцев назад +1

      Not really sure how much it weighs maybe 4-6 guys could lift it. I borrowed my neighbors air compressor I think it had around 10 gallon tank.

    The back of the frame looks really good for a 2007. I’d carefully inspect the top of the frame just behind the front wheels. It’s a common place for them to fail and it’s hard to see.

    I noticed your Pennsylvania license plate… I live in Erie pa. I used to own a 2006 Tacoma and I never undercoated it, it was totally rotted out after 13 years. Now a 2019 Tundra and I love the truck but I fluid film undercoat every fall, I’m not dealing with that again.

    No more open recall on these trucks? I haven’t looked mine up yet it’s an 08 but the previous owner didn’t drive it in salt, so I blasted it with wool wax, that really kept the frame clear of rust I’d say 90% of what I sprayed, the second time just recently I dropped the spare and sprayed the crap out of the rear end with wool wax again, highly recommend looking into that product for these trucks especially

    From one retired Veteran to another, thank you! '07 myself, on the fence between doing what you did, vs. a trade in. Maybe I missed it, but what was the purpose of cutting your airbag lines and splicing back in? Thx.

      Ok thanks. One last question, any regrets doing all of this work? Looks like you got two more years out of your '07. Wish you would have done the trade in back then, or glad you held on? What eventually made you trade it in?

    • @DIYJIM
      @DIYJIM  5 месяцев назад +1

      @@glencaron7471 I think it would have lasted at least 5 more years. My bed was rusted real bad. I was thinking about putting a flat bed on it. But it was 16 years old. I guess I was just ready for something new.

    Basically it appears you are attacking the external rust issues, but how are you tackling the internal rusting in the box sections of the frame? If you stuck a quality Boroscope inside all the factory holes in the frame, you'd see that the rust issues are creating the frame "cancer" from the inside. Needless to say, the needle tool you're touting is not gong to get much if any of the internal rust removed and not sure even bead blasting would work. Your frame doesn't appear to be as bad as some Tundras I've seen from the rust belt states, but removing what rust you can and then painting or spraying a coating like Fluid Film or Waxoyl (a Cosmolene waxy product) would provide more protection but even these products need to be re applied each fall. POR 15 has not worked on my Subaru Soutback and I have yet to try Rust Bullet.
    Bottom line, if you're not taking care of the internal rust issues, then I fear all your work on the exterior is going to be wasted effort and money.
