As soon as I finish The Book That Broke the World (in a few days), I’ll be starting The Judging Eye. I can’t wait to discuss it with you, Johanna! I’m hoping we might start The Dandelion Dynasty together in September, if that works for you. Let’s see what you make of Return to Edan in June . . . Also, it looks like you’re about to hit 6K subscribers!!! Congratulations in advance!
September and Dandelion should work for me! I'm excited for all our future discussions. I've been so close to 6K all week, and I'm just being patient. I used to call myself "the little channel that could," and then I missed the Jeopardy question for the title that references. 😆 Thank you, Philip!
You and Merphy have got me to add Roadside Picnic to my tbr. It sound super interesting!
So excited for that one! I hope we all love it!
I can't wait to hear your thoughts on The Aspects-Emperor. The Judging Eye is probably the most traditional fantasy of the seven books, so it's both a lot of peoples favorite and least favorite book in the series, so it will be interesting to see were you and Philip Chase land on it.
I've heard of Roadside Picnic before but had no idea of what it's about. Sounds interesting. I might have to pick that one up myself.
I'm really looking forward to The Judging Eye! I'm sure it will lead us into an interesting discussion.
The little I've heard about Roadside Picnic has me very excited! Thanks, Andrew!
I can't wait to hear what you think of The Judging Eye. The last few chapters of that book are what comes to mind when I try to think of my all-time favorite fantasy. I can't even remember another time where my heart was pounding so hard while reading. I love the whole series but that sequence alone makes The Judging Eye my favorite of the seven.
I'm also curious about Roadside Picnic. I've been hearing about that for decades but still haven't got around to it. I have seen the movie and played the games that were inspired by it.
Thanks for the video!
Wow, that’s high praise! I’m starting The Judging Eye today, and I’m so eager to find out what happens next! We’ll be picking up Roadside Picnic mid-month and looking forward to it. Thanks!
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice. Finished My Effin Life, Geddy's biography, a few weeks ago. Highly recommend for Rush fans.
After reading Blood Meridian, I really see its influence in Judging Eye. Bakker also could also easily become a horror writer if he really wanted to.
I may need to check out that biography. I read Blood Meridian while reading A Thousandfold Thought, and that was a fascinating pairing. I'm excited to see more of McCarthy's influence in The Judging Eye!
Bakker did write one horror novel, Neuropath, present day/near-future setting
you had me at the Rush song. I'm adding "Determined" to TBR Mountain!
YAY! We need to chat about music sometime! Enjoy Determined!

Roadside Picnic was quite unique, really atmospheric. And of course I am once again taking to a Booktube comment section to sing the praises of R. Scott Bakker, look forward to hearing what you think. While on a whole Aspect Emperor is the darker series I feel like The Judging Eye allowed a few rays of sunshine through the clouds before it gets really bleak in The White Luck Warrior, I enjoyed the nuanced change of tone.
I’m so glad to hear your praises for both books! I’m starting The Judging Eye today, and I’m very eager to experience how the story evolves!
The book by Sapolsky seems very interesting, I'll check his interviews , as you suggest. The only other book on the subject I've read was "Free will" by Sam Harris, and it was a fascinating read. Thanks!
If I’m not mistaken, I think Sam Harris lands on the idea that humans lack free will-is that right? Sapolsky is so good at tackling the topic from multiple scientific perspectives. Thanks!
Hyped for Judgjng Eye! ❤
I’m in ch 1 and already hooked!
I should get back to Bakker soon!
DO IT! :)
Kyle got me to read The Paper Menagerie collection as well, and I was really impressed with it. I hope you enjoy it too!
I've only read the first few pages, and if that quality any indication of the rest of the stories, I think I'm going to love this collection! Thanks, Josh!
Sounds like a great TBR Johanna! Determined sounds very interesting. I’m looking forward to hearing your thoughts on it. I need to get back the Bakker books.
Thank you, Chas! Determined is fascinating so far! Hope you enjoy getting back to Bakker.
I was just discussing on a live chat last week how I wanted to add Roadside Picnic to my TBR. I hadn’t realised that the movie Stalker was based on this book and I loved that movie so I just have to check it out now!
I keep hearing great things about the Stalker movie! I’m terrible about watching adpatations, but I might make an exception for that one. 😊
@@Johanna_reads it is a great movie
I need to start reading Bakker 🙈 I think I'd like them. I may slip in Roadside Picnic; I'm curious how it differs from the movie.
So far the only books already planned in my May tbr are:
The Ambassadors - Henry James
Someone at a Distance - Dorothy Whipple
Those Above - Daniel Polansky
I'd be very curious to hear your thoughts on Bakker! It's so hard to recommend that series, but his writing is truly fascinating. Happy reading!
Bakker’s Second Apocalypse series is my favourite of all time
"Roadside Picnic" may just have my favorite ending of any book I've ever read. You're in for such a treat. Cheers!
I'm really looking forward to it! Thank you!
Unpopular opinion but The Judging Eye is one of favourite books of the whole series.
I'm currently reading Curse of the Mistwraith, its slow going but I'm hooked.
I’m starting The Judging Eye today! I thought Curse of the Mistwraith was a strong book 1. Every book echoes back to what happened in that book, so it’s a good sign if you’re hooked!
Roadside Picnic was an interesting read for me, but not necessarily a fun read. There are some dark beans lurking right under the surface. I am extremely curious to hear your take on it.
The Paper Menagerie is he is an easy pick, I think you’ll like some stories and love others. And I’m with you and that I also struggle with short stories; often I’ll start, read a short story or two or three, and then not finish…
Determined sounds like a fascinating read, it’s been well reviewed. I’ve been listening to Sam Harris talk about freewill quite a bit. It’s a intriguing and from perspective of the human experience, counterintuitive subject.
I love the variety of books on your tbr. Happy May!
Glad to hear your honest thoughts about Roadside Picnic! I'm already excited about The Paper Menagerie. Determined is so interesting so far! Happy reading, Bart!
Paper Menagerieee!!! Ken Liu is one of my all-time faves, and it all started with that collection. You will love it, no doubt about it! If only because Kyle and Bookborn will talk you into loving it 🤣
Also curious to hear your thoughts on that nonfiction, it sounds kinda intimidating haha. Happy reading!!
Evie just joined the group, so now it’s three rereaders and me. 😂 I finished the first two stories before the others and already had positive things to say! So excited to get more into it. Sapolsky’s Determined is fascinating so far! Happy reading to you too, Esmay! ❤️
I agree about Roadside Picnic, it was a very interesting concept. I need to get to the Aspect Emperor books soon also. Nice picks!
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed Roadside Picnic and glad to hear you'll be picking up Aspect Emperor soon!
Happy reading to you!! 😊
Thank you! You too! 😊
I love Andrei Tarkovsky’s film adaptation of «Roadside Picnic», «Stalker», and plan to read «The Prince of Nothing» Trilogy over the Summer Months, so I will definitely be listening to your review and re-watching your discussions with Professor Chase, Jimmy and Raf as I progress through them! 😄 I have actually not read «The Paper Menagerie» yet, though «Grace of Kings» is my Favorite Fantasy Book written in the last ten years, so I am excited to hear your thoughts on all three!😃
I had to rearrange somewhat my April and May TBR, as Petrik & Jake Bishop group-pressured me (though in the nicest way, after all Petrik is Southeast Asian and Jake Canadian! 😄) into start reading «Howling Dark» right away after finishing «Empire of Silence» earlier this month and the Cyberpunk elements of «Howling Dark» made me want to pick up «Idoru» by William Gibson right after, so I have pushed back «The Green Pearl» (Lyonesse Trilogy #2) from April till May.
Further on my May TBR List, I have:
«The Wise Man’s Fear» by Patrick Rothfuss (Fantasy, sequel to «The Name of the Wind»)
«Madouc» (Lyonesse Trilogy #3) by Jack Vance ((Pre-)Arthurian Fantasy)
«The Dragonbone Chair» (Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn, #1) by Tad Williams (Epic Fantasy, a key influence for George R. R. Martin's « A Song of Ice and Fire»)
If you're okay with reading all the graphic, dark things in the Prince of Nothing Trilogy, I think you will get a lot out of it! We might need more resource videos from you!
Judging Eye! My least favorite of them all, but it still does a solid groundwork for things to come.
I'm glad to hear that it gets better and better!
@@Johanna_reads many people disagree about it getting better, haha. But they all agree that it gets darker with each book, and for me it worked like a charm.
Judging Eye is quite high in the ranking for me, they’re hard to separate though 😊 just for that one sequence that’s an homage to a classic fantasy sequence…
Hi Johanna. I have Dr. Chase's trilogy and The Paper Menagerie on my future TBR. Happy May reading.
Hooray! Happy reading to you too, Curt!
Stalker is one of my favorite films ever! I cannot imagine a novel capturing what Tarkovsky managed to do with a camera, but at the same time I say that I can't see say Wolfe's The Book of the New Sun ever being adapted either. It's funny how it can go both ways.
I haven't read the book myself, but I'm definitely interested to have a go with it.
I’m usually terrible at watching adaptations, but you have me curious to try it out! I own and haven’t yet read Book of the New Sun, but I imagine that would be challenging to adapt.
@@Johanna_reads I hope you do! Tarkovsky was one of the "big" directors and he pured everything into his films. Stalker is one of those films that makes use of its medium to the absolute fullest potential. Shots are often MINUTES long allowing one to explore the shot itself from corner to corner, which is totally unheard of in modern cinema. FYI he also adapted Solaris, which is one of the scifi greats.
A huge portion of Stalker was filmed at an abandoned factory and the cast was affected terribly as a result of the site being heavily contaminted. Tarkovsky himself passed away due to cancer. The abandoned factory gives the film such a special look and feel that captures the scifantasy (its a beautiful mesh of the two) nature of the story! While we see decay, destruction and ruin, we also see beauty and life and a paradise. A LOT of this is captured by his genius direction.
The cast was also amazing and the acting some of the best I've seen. I assume the dialogue and lines were more directly adapted from the novel.
Man I can't wait until you get to The Book of the New Sun. It's a masterpiece IMO.
P.S. A sound designed commented about the filming at the factory: "We were shooting near Tallinn in the area around the small river Jägala with a half-functioning hydroelectric station. Up the river was a chemical plant and it poured out poisonous liquids downstream. There is even this shot in Stalker: snow falling in the summer and white foam floating down the river. In fact it was some horrible poison. Many women in our crew got allergic reactions on their faces. Tarkovsky died from cancer of the right bronchial tube. And Tolya Solonitsyn too. That it was all connected to the location shooting for Stalker became clear to me when Larisa Tarkovskaya died from the same illness in Paris."
@@berserker8884 What an awful outcome from the film! I still haven't seen the Solaris adaptation though I read and loved the book earlier this year.
I keep hearing great things about Book of the New Sun and have no doubt you're right!
Excited for Paper Menagerie! I've been meaning to read Remote Control for years now. I've never heard of Roadside Picnic but it sounds really interesting so I'll be curious about your thoughts! I'm also reading Behave this month, finally.
The more I hear about Roadside Picnic, the more excited I am! So excited about Paper Menagerie as well!
First of all, girl that hair is everything! Secondly, I definitely will be checking out Determined by Robert M. Sopalsky. That’s sounds so interesting. I’ll be interested to hear what you think about the Paper Menagarie. I’m almost finished the Dandelion Dynasty and Ken Liu has become one of my favorite authors of all time.
Thank you so much, Dark-O! ❤️ I'm so glad you're loving the Dandelion Dynasty. There's nothing more exciting than finding a new favorite author. Happy reading!
I’m excited to see your review of The Paper Menagerie! I feel like I’ve heard the title but don’t know much about it. I want to read Dandelion Dynasty with you!!
Hooray! I'm buddy-reading Dandelion Dynasty with Philip Chase, and I'm excited that you're interested in reading the series as well. I don't think I've heard a single negative review of The Paper Menagerie. It's so popular!
I just finished The Judging Eye (reread) this past month and Roadside Picnic back in January.
I think I went into the latter with expectations set way too high (I was convinced it would be an all time favourite) and was a bit disappointed it fell short of that. It’s undoubtedly very influential and important book for the genre though
I always appreciate a less hyped opinion to balance my expectations. I really hope to have a good time!
@@Johanna_reads ohh I still really enjoyed it, not trying to be a hype kill lol. It just didn’t completely blow my mind or anything like I’ve seen with some others. Unfair expectations on my part though.
There’s one part that has really stuck with me so that’s something.
Nice video, your reading plans are always so interesting!
Thank you, Mike!
Paper Menagerie is completely wonderful! Very original and heartfelt
I’m two stories in and enjoying it so far!
Good plan! I have read Remote Control and it is a lot ‘easier’ than the other title you read, but still not as ‘easy’ as Binti. She juxtaposes here old world traditions with a futuristic culture - it is both fantasy and scifi. Shall look forward to your opinion on it, and whether the Seed is an agent for good or evil. Been meaning to read Paper Menagerie too...
Wow, what an excellent pitch for the book and a great way to set expectations. I love a good sci-fantasy blend. I'm so excited about The Paper Menagerie! Thank you, Vero!
Roadside Picnic was an 8/10 for me and I think it’s a type of sci-fi that you might enjoy!
I hope so! Glad to hear how it ranked for you, Jonathan!
I typically stick to epic fantasy, but Remote Control seems like a book worth checking out. Interesting May reading list!
It really does sound fascinating, and it’s very short! Might be a good book to insert between doorstopper fantasy tomes. Thanks!
I'll be very interested to hear your thoughts on the philosophy books and, of course, Return to Edan.
Thank you, Jarrod! Happy reading!
Hello there hey there hey
Hello! :)
I do love starting a new series by a new author, as it probably means I get to do some haulin’ 🛒😁 but I have not been doing so great at my 2024 goal of completing some series… 🫣 I have them all tracked on The StoryGraph but that urge to try new authors is strong.
I do have Bakker’s “The Darkness That Comes Before” as a result of your previous words on his works, so this is very much one of those to try and potentially haul everything 🤗
Very much liking the mixing-in of non-fiction coverage on your channel. I don’t tend to stray outside of SFF on BookTube simply because so, many, books. For me, non-fiction tends to get collected and read rarely as a result. But I am rather partial to going off-piste occasionally and I do like to see it.
This is my problem as well! 😅 Although "enjoy" always feels like the wrong word for a Bakker book, I hope you enjoy The Darkness That Comes Before. While you may notice LotR and Dune influences, I really think it's one-of-a-kind in fantasy.
I'm honestly not the best about reading non-fiction, but I almost always appreciate what I get out of it. Happy reading! 😊
