Hi guys, This video has gotten more views than I anticipated. I would like to reiterate that this is NOT the correct way to convert your truck to a dually. I always recommend buying STEEL wheel spacers and upgrading your suspension if you want improved payload capacity. Enjoy the video, and don't take it too seriously!
The stock ten ply single wheel tires will carry more weight then them 4 ply tires this entirely counter productive if you don’t run ten plies honestly no point at all
Hey I thought about doing this to my k2500 it works. But through research I found Toyota did the same thing with motor homes in the 80s had to recall due to to many axle shafts snapping and wheels rolling away from the vehicle. You have the right axle for doing it though. They used a semi floater your using a single rear full floater. Thanks for the video!
A Rural Vermonter - Qqjmcb 182 I think if you bought the steel spacers , add a couple leaf springs ,, your in there ! Great job , I like it . Long as you aren’t hauling heavy and just like the looks and extra traction , it’s a WIN !! 🇺🇸
The happiness in your voice when the tires went on and you said “aythinkitlookspurtycule” I know that feeling. I too have had a lot of cheap thrills in my life
You shouldn’t lift by the rear axle if it’s not a solid rear axle. Then again if you buy a vehicle that doesn’t have a solid rear axle you basically bought a POS toy anyway.
The thing I dont trust the most is I didn't see the use of any loctite on those lug nuts holding the spacer down.I have seen spacers come off far too many times, blue threadlock fixes that.
It’s already getting that cold in Vermont. I’ll have to bring some warm clothes when I drive up to Woodstock in October. We’re still in the 90s in Houston.
I did this to my 1/2 ton a 94 chevy using the dually adapter kit from JC Whitney catalog in fact I still have the kit it allows you to use stock 5 lug tire and rims it served the purpose but yes it looks good just keep an eye on the tork of the lugs from time to time. Great vid.
...had no idea! Awesome redneck conversion! Looking forward doing this on my suburban! All i need now are tires/rims and flares! Thank you for this info
Duals rock for towing as any wrecker driver knows because double the sidewall count reduces sway. It's also nice to be able to limp a greater distance if you have a rear flat at an inconvenient location. BTW keep an eye out at the salvage yard for the DRW front hub extensions which are basically factory spacers.
Thank you for your video. I have acquired the 1997 version of the same truck and was planning to do the same. However, I will change my transmission to a manual
You get what you pay for. I highly recommend staying away from aluminum ones and getting the steel adapters. Arrowcraft sells some stout and dependable ones.

I might do this to my F-350 because Id love a dually but my F-350 is so clean, I might just pull the bed and put a flat bed and make it a dually and when I’m done put the bad back on and take off the extra wheel.
Remember something my young friend, don't worry about want someone thinks, what you do to your vehicles is your business. There your vehicles. Not there's. Am glad to see your getting over your surgery so fast. Also am glad to see you put socks and shoes on half way thur that video. Don't work in those other things you had on. You've got people out here that care about you. In U tube land. Sincerely, Jim. Hi Beetle......
Sadly I see this is a four year old video, but this would help anyone who decides to do this. Make sure those dually adaptors are steel and have the little extension of steel for the inner rim to help center plus keep the rims from walking around. You will notice that the original wheels were also done this way so regardless of type wheel used, all rims need this to keep that from happening. Next is to do the same on the front wheels as it also keeps you from carrying two different spare tires. I see many different brands out on the market since american tire makers are struggling with labor costs which add to costs of doing this. Just a hint of troubles ahead is the rear stabilizer or sway bar as some call it. Go up to the one ton dually sway bar/stabilizer which is much larger and keep from breaking those rims when loaded. I am seventy four as for age and a mechanic for a large amount of this time.
Actually the factory dually rearend is wider. Swapping the hubs out would be safer and stronger for sure. The spacer multiplys the stress on the bearings.
Luv to see the way you go about things, your inocence and honesty will do you well in life. Its great that You Do As You Please. Dont Ever Change. I hope your Surgery went as expected ♡♥
I had a set of 4 on my rav 4 sport done pretty good at 20k miles and at 4 tread in the front being a little off in alignment so i cant say bad, they did great in the snow!
Good plan, but I still wouldn't get under it with that bottle jack, need to have a floor jack so you can stay out from under it. That's how I do it, just settle the jack plate right under the strut mount and lift away :D
I own 2 6.5's and a 7.3, I love the 7.3 engine but I like Chevy trucks better, also have driven a Cummins numerous times those are excellent but they are hard to find in decent shape in NE.
a 15, a 14, and another 15 in.car rim sta ked like that with no tires on them is a safe, stable way to raise a jack. you may need a hunk of 2x6 under your jack if it is smaller than the center hole. welded together, they make an industrial strength stand to set a car on while you work under it. it is what we used when i was a parts puller at a junkyard.
Please keep in mind that conversion to dually ALONE, would not increase loading capacity. It only .. . . - improves stability of vehicles with tall vans when encountered with strong winds. - improves stability when tall vehicles (specially when loaded) goes over 40 kph. - gives better grip when braking, specially on wet roads or when cargo is stack higher than cab height.

Its funny, I live in NH and really don't see it here much but in VT I've seen many people run winter tires even studded all year. I figure with the short summer it must not be worth paying for different sets or dismount/mounting fees. Just run one set till their worn and replace em!
Looks good bro I’m thinking to convert my 2004 Dodge Ram 2500 with some Crome 22 inch rims mine is a flat bed now with single wheel looks ugly but thanks for the video
yep, had a rock bust through both panes of my windshield in a 45mph zone because a guy in the oncoming lane had a flatbed on and no flaps in front of the tires. People never think about flinging rocks forward. it happens a LOT.
That seems sketchy as hell, those cheap eBay wheel spacers are known to crack, but even if they are ok your putting a ton of stress on the stock wheel lugs. Triply so if your towing. On a side note those 6.5 have some known issues (nothing near as bad as the ford 6.0 or 6.4). but they can be easily fixed and rectified. Ah I'm not concerned, these are tough steel. I have friend with 200k on aluminum ones. As for the 6.5 issues, luckily the previous owner took care of all the common problems. (Lift pump, pmd, cooling, balancer, head studs, etc)
I know this is 4 years old but I got to mention a major mistake. The wheels you took off were lug centric with coned lugnuts. The dually wheels are hub centric and should have flat lugnuts with a hub centric spacer. That could be a bad combination using no flat lugnuts and no hub centering that wheel.
Hope this is only for looking good in the driveway and not for on the road. My friend just sheared off his studs on his factory dually and wasn't using cheap adapters made out of soft aluminum. Wheel adapters should only be used for boat anchors.
Well at least you had a one ton rear end to start with. That’s a plus. The tire load increase helps, but you still only have the strength of the original lugs. By the way, a true duely will be a 2 ton plus. The rims fit snug on the hub so the weight isn’t only on the studs themselves. Only saying so that anyone who tries this doesn’t overload the capacity of the original rear end. Looks good, but doesn’t help. The original single wheels would have done the same job. And you woulda had $600 for fuel.
I've watched this video like 3 times and I have no clue how I missed that this truck is a 6.5 until now. Anyways- time to turn my truck into a road hazard
You said the spacers are steel, they were bought new on ebay under $100 bucks? I'm looking for a pair like that if there steel an under 100 bucks you know the name brand? Thanks......

I would use a 55 gallon drum cut it to make your wheel fenders under the bed then hang mud flap off them
*eye twitch*
Use the blue plastic barrels for even more comments from people at the gas station.
I usually put jack in the middle of the axle
That's how an old mechanic taught me. When I was tryna jack up a 3500 dually dump truck, he was like, "put the jack under the pumpkin"
You should put dually adapters on the front too so the front matches the back
Actually that would probably a really funny thing to watch.
Knalltüte duh well it’s a 3/4 ton already. Making “look” like a dually wouldn’t be very deceiving because they tow about the same.
