ABANDONED Childhood Mall With Retro Movie Theatre LARGEST MALL IN OHIO | Richmond Town Square

  • Richmond Town Square opened in 1966 with Sears and JCPenney as its original anchors, a Loews Theater, and Woolworths. After several changes, including the addition of the Richmond Town Square Branch of the Cuyahoga County Public Library, Kaufmann's replacing Woolworths, and the renovation of the mall in 1998, DeBartolo Realty Corp merged with Simon Property Group, which expanded and renamed the mall.
In 2006, Kaufmann's was rebranded to Macy's, and Barnes & Noble closed in 2010. WP Glimcher purchased the mall in 2014, but the mall was sold to the Kohan Retail Investment Group in 2016. Both Sears and JCPenney announced they would close in 2017, and in August 2020, the Kohan Retail Investment Group announced that the mall would close permanently to allow for redevelopment to take place.
DealPoint Merrill later announced plans to bring luxury apartments, a hotel, and a park to the mall's north end, where the vacant Sears building and parking lot are located, in a $69 million investment named Belle Oaks at Richmond. The mall was planned to be demolished in the fall of 2020 but remained open throughout the rest of 2020 and until May 6, 2021, when it finally closed for good. The remaining portions of the mall were sold to DealPoint Merrill in July 2021, and an event was held in the parking lot of the former Sears in June 2021 to show locals the plans of Belle Oaks.

Three generations of my family worked at this mall! My mom was at Sears from 1977-2005, my sister in the mid-1980s at Woolworth's, me at JCPENNEY from 1995-1998 (left right after the renovations were done so I remember the red carpet in the mall all too well). My child worked at Regal for the last month they were open at the end of 2021. A lot of memories!

It breaks my heart to see these beautiful pieces of memory and history just being abandoned like that . With all the life that use to pass through the malls halls and having its stores full of shoppers . now it’s just a echo and shell of a distant past. :( . If buildings could speak ….

Dude, I went to this mall ALL THE TIME as a kid. Hanging around the GameStop just to look at all the games and occasionally buy a GBA Pokémon when they didn’t cost a thousand bucks, seeing movies with my family, getting free samples of Anne Ann’s, poking around the FYE despite being way to young to understand much of what I was looking at in there and grabbing chicken teriyaki fried rice from the food court (shoutout to Osaka, the cashier lady was always happy to see me and the food was delicious coming after a long day of high school). The last time I was in there they had posters saying stuff along the lines of “the mall isn’t dying! We’re getting ready for bigger and better times!” I and nobody else believed it. Absolutely tragic to see it like this but at least some of its memory is preserved in this video.

This is literally the mall from from my childhood. My parents both worked at that mall from the 70's through 90's. I saw SO many movies at both the indoor and outdoor(connected) theaters at that mall. I remember decorating poster board egg shells and they would hang them from the ceiling. I remember going to Scotto's Pizza. I remember going to Woolworths there. I've been by there multiple times over the years and took photos/videos of the outside of the mall. I'm completely heartbroken that after all the money they poured into the mall during the renovation in the late 90's... they're tearing it down. I will miss that mall so much. Thank you so much for taking this video. I wish I could have been with you to walk through this mall one last time.

I remember the original mall design as a kid and when this mall was renovated in the late 90s. Interestingly I grew up near another mall that has since been demolished (Euclid Square Mall) and that mall declined as the tenants moved to Richmond Town Square. I used to love to people watch there, from the upper level, during Christmas. It had such a festive atmosphere. Then they closed down the second level and that, in my opinion, was the beginning of it's end. Woolworth's was the bomb!!! Best fish sandwich in the world.

Hello Steve. I've only been subscribed for a month or so. Heard Angelo talking about your channel. So I looked you up. Glad to be here, loved the video of this mall. It's so sad that kids today won't have such places to hang out. Please be safe out there.

This is such an awesome upload! I grew up with this mall and it brings back good memories. A lot of the stores you aren't familiar with are small businesses that took over spaces that were formerly well known brands such as Foot Locker. Also, RTS isn't the largest mall in Ohio. It is one of the largest, but not the largest. Other Ohio malls such as SouthPark Mall and the now closed Cincinnati Mills are bigger.

@@nochistar It isn't like this in other countries. But, in America at least it's because of online shopping, places with cheaper prices, and places like Walmart or Target that have everything.

I'm surprised the Exton Mall in Exton, Pennsylvania isn't looking like this. I mean, almost every store there is closed. They've got like, not even ten stores left, and that's including food places. They've got a Round One arcade which apparently has been there since 2016, which is actually kinda surprising that it's even still there to this day considering that it's letting itself go downhill rather quickly. Honestly, I think the arcade is basically the only reason the place is somehow still open. Because if that place were to shut down one day then nobody would have a reason to go to the Exton Mall, which would quickly result in the rest of the places in the mall shutting down, and that would mean that the Exton Mall would be gone completely.

When my oldest daughter was younger I use to give her $5.00 and it was enough for her to go to the drug store next to the movies 🎥. She would get her snacks there go over to the movies 🍿 pay to get in and still have a quarter left over to call me when the movie was over to come pick her and her friends up! This was a great video! Loved 🥰 the whole thing! Thanks 😊! Looks like that mall could still be renovated??!! But I don’t understand why just about all mall’s close up ?! We have one in Slidell, Louisiana off Airport Road closed up !

Osaka in the food court is so good. I'm pretty sure it's Thai food. My local mall that is still functioning has that place. Charley's cheesesteak is also a good place to eat. I actually just ate at one in the mall a couple months ago.

I have never been to this mall, but I started watching Urbex videos during covid because a suggested video popped up that was an explore from a mall in the small town I grew up in. I didn't even know Urbex was a thing back then. Now I regularly watch about half a dozen explorers. :) I appreciate seeing different things that I would never probably see on my own. 😊

Most know that the Cleveland area was completely over mall-ed. There are four other malls (and 1 outdoor mall) in the near vicinity which contributed to the Richmond mall closing. Two of those other malls are now closed.
I used to come to this mall occasionally when I was little…

Is Tower city mall still thriving? I saw that the front fountain was taken out which i thought was cool with the jumping water. Last time I was there was a few years ago for the tree lighting for Christmas but not sure how it's doing now. I don't go to Cleveland all that often.
