Turns out your index finger is your pointer finger, and your middle finger is... well, just your middle finger. Also my keyboard is full sized, my hands are just big - I've only had this keyboard for 6 months and I can promise you I have done my weird hand placements on every keyboard I've owned! Yeah. I always wondered why his movements were a little odd, and corrections to his movement took longer than I expected. I had just dismissed it as him being a little quirky, but hand straining contortions are more than a little quirky.
This makes so much sense actually. This explains why there’s a slight delay between when he shifts side to side when talking to hermits. He literally uses one finger for WASD
OMG we finally know why Mumbo's movement in his videos is SO different from anybody else. Who would have thought that way of using WASD would make such iconic movement patterns

Technically we did watch physical therapy! I went through physical therapy as a kid, learning to balance, skip, and having a horrible rubber thing on a pencil to force me to hold it correctly 😂
It does finally explain how he does it though! Because the pushes the other fingers further left, making thumb shifting just very slightly less awkward.
Fun fact, the Nausea is very probably because your brain isn't used to those movements (in the game) coming from those movements (of your hand) It's very similar to the root of Motion sickness.
The fact that you play with just one finger for all directions is honestly super impressive but also horrifying. The nuance in movements goes out the window.
What's funny is, Mumbo's often said he's bad at Parkour, and... well... I think we just learned why, and it WASN'T the thumb thing. I really want to see Mumbo try a parkour course now that he's learned some proper hand positioning.
I'll be honest. When I saw the thumbnail (for the video. Not his actual thumbnail) I thought it was going to involve some type of mild electro-shock therapy. That would've been entertaining. Maybe a collab with ElectroBoom is in order.
This is extremely funny but also genuinely probably good for you; you are probably saving yourself years of arthritis from undue joint stresses down the road. Godspeed and keep up the good work o7
He's used to associating using his pointer finger to move so when doing it doesn't make him move, or when doing it with the other finger, it triggers motion sickness. This is basically the same thing as when playing vr for the first time, most people get motion sick. I have never seen this happen with a 2d screen with someone who plays so much Minecraft. This is fascinating to me.
Oh, many non gamers get motion sick from playing on flat screens, it's a very documented phenomenon, and FOV and screen/HUD shaking options are often explicitly there to battle motion sickness
@@andrewmirror4611Yeah, that happens a lot. What IS weird thou, and what he probably meant, is that he never got motion sickness... and THEN started doing so because he changed how he clicks the keys. Getting sick because of an underliying association in the brain between the fingers movements and the expected screen movement as a result. If everytime you tried to walk (in game or in real life) forward, you moved to the left... yeah, that's where the motion sickness seems to be comming from.
Now that I think about it, has Mumbo ever walked diagonally, it would require pressing 2 directional keys at once. I can't even imagine playing like this. I kind of want to try it out as a sort of challenge, beating Minecraft with Mumbo style. Which would include thumb shifting of course.
Chicken pecking the movement keys actually makes sense, since Minecraft is pretty much the only game Mumbo ever plays. He's never really required to strafe or otherwise press two movement keys at once
Learning that you press all of WASD with just your index finger was gold, and then seeing how your natural instinct to not being able to WASD with your index finger was to instead WASD with your middle finger just embedded gemstones into that gold bar. I just came here to see you combat your thumb-shifting. I had no idea there was more to it than that.

On the contrary, I think the overall hand configuration together makes a lot more sense than randomly crossing the thumb under the rest of the fingers.

Honestly seeing how large Mumbo's hand is compared to the membrane keyboard, I can understand how using the index finger for moving is more comfortable and what comes naturally. Maybe getting a larger keyboard/Mechanical one would make it easier. But the Membrane one is probably a lot more convenient to carry around
Having big fingers over a comparatively smaller keyboard. Hmm. He probably also faced the issue Ren had with fingers too close to use on WASD, but he just used 1 finger where Ren keybinded it differently.
wait till he finds out that the "pointer finger" IS the index finger and he has made all of us along with himself confused. Because if he means his middle finger by his "pointer finger" it's hilarious to imagine him pointing at things with that

i think most gamers have their left hand further in on the keyboard than mumbo, as you see he has his hand very much to the left, making it easier to press shift with the thumb. He is also left handed which does not help in this case

Not sure I'd have gone for safety cables, but at least it seems like it was vaguely effective for you Mumbo. You very much might make an interesting case study in my & my husband's field.
I always controlled wasd with 3 fingers, pointer middle and ring. Kudos to Mumbo for managing to play with only 1, but certainly explains why his movements were rarely at angles
Well, I press W and S with my middle finger, D with my pointer/index finger, and A with my ring finger, so there's that. I got it from when I used to play a game called Tanki Online, and I would move the tank using the arrow keys with the same 3-finger deal with my right hand, which made it very easy to turn and go forward/backward at the same time, and with my left hand I would have my pinkie on Z to turn the turret left, my ring finger on X to turn the turret right, my middle finger on C to bring the turret to center, and my pointer/index finger on the spacebar to fire the gun, not even touching the mouse, and you didn't have to aim the gun up or down, it just kinda fired up or down within a certain window automatically. When I started playing other games, I did the same 3-finger control with my left hand on WASD. It's a bit weird, but at least I have a reasonable and understandable explanation for where it came from, unlike Mumbo.
@@andreinaf Oh, when Mumbo was going on about using his pointer finger I got confused and thought he meant that most people push WASD with only their middle finger.

Mumbo Jumbo literally just needs to play two matches of an arena shooter to understand why people use Ring, Middle, Index for A, W/S, and D for movement
I don't think you actually need to force yourself to change your habits, but I have to admit, this was one of the most hilarious videos I've seen in a long time. So much laughter...
It will help, just that there would be a quirk manifesting. Just like when I was forced to write with the thumb and the index finger rather than the entire fist, my ring finger started doing ... things.
@@hoseinsan9752You know, I blame most of the way I type with having learned typing and piano around the same time. Keyboards, you gotta tap em (just right, or you get carpal tunnel and spinal muscle detachment)
People did this with factories back in the day. In order to prevent workers from crushing their hands in machinery they would have ropes attached to the wrists and pull back their hands when the machine activates. They are called “press pullback” if you want to look it up. We found out that all you need to do is require the operator to punch two buttons with both hands to prevent them crushing their hands rather than physically pulling back the hands.
Lol, this is actually still a thing. They're used in sheet metal manufacturing when the operator has to hold a piece at the same time they operate the press. I also work in the powdered metal industry and all the operators have figured out how to press both buttons with one arm (hand and elbow)
Yup still in use for when you are working around punch presses that have pinch points. Trust me after watching a de-gloving video or two you don’t forget the straps lol. I used to work in a metal forming and parts fabrication factory and as annoying as those straps are they keep your digits intact. It’s really easy to become complacent when doing monotonous tasks around heavy machinery.
I work in a factory, and a good amount of the manual machines that use any hydraulics require two buttons to activate. The exception being anything old. Every old machine there could well be a Deathtrap.
As someone with a hypermobility condition which has been causing me issues, I also have been having to use insane devices to try and make my fingers NOT do just insane things. It is a struggle and a legitimate workout. I feel you Mumbo
I am impressed with the quality of your "Thumb Shift Detector" Cam. The colors and colordepths are impressive and the focal with the soft bokeh is beautiful.
@ThatMumboJumbo I recommend just resting your fingers on their desired keys before playing anything with the desired finger->key choices. For example, it is most common for players to use middle finger for W and S, ring finger for A, index finger for D, and pinky for shift or alt
I love how genuinely confused you sound at 1:42 and realizing your other fingers doing weird things too - this was such a beaultiful thing to watch and to hear how you just laughing at the absurdity that is your finger setup. It's always good to be able to laugh at yourself =D

@sethsmith2608 that's an incredibly daft take, wtfh! It's wrong on so many levels, I cant even list them all! Therapy seeks to heal and help the patient, torture is the literal opposite, it's to inflict pain and injury to someone until they give up! Therapy is to help someone change negative convictions that keep them down, torture is mentally and physically breaking them down until they betray their conviction and gove the torture what they want for it to stop. Therapy requires the patient's willing participation in order to work while torture is literally a means to break the victims will! If you think therapy was comparable to torture you either don't know the first thing about therapy, have a terrible therapist or have been forced into a treatment called "conversion therapy", which actually is abuse/torture, not therapy.
Fun Fact: There was a famous pianist who did kind of the same thing: He attached a cable to his ringfinger, because he was sick of it being weaker than the others, so it would be trained more. This led to a severe joint injury. The pianist could never play the same as before. So, maybe dont make this cable thing a habit?
Right, but that cable was so the pianist had to strain the joint more to move. Mumbo’s safety-cord things aren’t straining his finger, they’re just preventing them from moving to a different key
That pianist was Robert Schumann, who after temporarly paralyzing his middle and ring finger at his right hand and broke his pianist career, turned to composing becoming a world known composer
@@baritonemickeyso what you’re saying is that mumbo is going to end his Minecraft career with a devastating injury and turn into a Minecraft developer so he can fix all the redstone issues
I heard of a similar thing once where on order to free his hands and increase his range he had a doctor sever a tendon in his hand and it just made half his hand go limp
yknow, now that i've SEEN how it actually looks, im not so against it now i know that: a) your hand is MASSIVE (thank grian for that one) b) you actually relax your whole hand and only use the index for moving (actually makes sense now that i think about it) c) your hand slightly comes from the side, its not such a sharp, 'thumb u-turn' d) your keyboard is compact, its a laptop keyboard. this make SOOOOOOOOO much sense make no mistake, you're still one of the weirdest
yeah I think the main thing is actually the index finger doing all the movement, I have really big hands and i was trying to figure out how he could confortably press wasd with his 3 fingers (especially ring finger) and it felt off but as soon as i swapped to just index and sometimes index and middle finger it felt way more natural
That fact that Mumbo pressed the wasd keys all with one finger makes so much sense. In so many of his videos his movements feel clunky, like someone playing for the first time. But its just him pressing one key at a time
If you genuinely want to change this I agree with several other comments I’ve seen: 1. Get a new keyboard, new environment or position for your keyboard makes it easier to learn new habits. You might consider one with an ergonomic split layout. 2. Limit how long you use physical restraints like this and maybe add a pad of some kind. 3. Reward yourself when you do it right.
True if he is changing his entire typing experience might as well go with a bulgy split keyboard and get the suffering that is hitting y with your left or t with your right (whichever you prefer) out of the way.
Another really good option is to buy a mouse with programmable buttons (I just got a hero G502 and map stuff like jump shift and inventory to the side buttons!
i recently relized that i ALSO press shift w/ my thumb, and wasd w/ my index. despite that i can type decently fast and when i do that i use my pinky so your not alone Mumbo
i have hypermobile joints, which are especially bad in my fingers, and i often end up pressing shift with my thumb and using wasd with my index finger because those fingers stay in position slightly more reliably than my middle and pinky fingers. the first thing i thought of when the thumb shifting controversy came out was to wonder if it was just less painful for you. etho explaining that his setup was more comfortable for him physically made the whole thing make perfect sense to me, too: a bad enough case of carpal tunnel could end his career, so reducing wrist and hand pain is crucial.
Seconding this! Mumbo you fit the type for hypermobile joints! Long and lanky and naturally making self-accommodations in the ways you use your keyboard. You can get little fancy joint holders that help if you are- talk to yer doc about it if this keeps being a problem!
i actually tried etho's setup, it's very comfortable! the only problem is, i couldn't figure out how to rotate the mouse inputs so i dont have to move the mouse left to look up
@@somearthling it's not a rotation of inputs, it's how you are thinking of it. To look up, you still push the mouse towards the cable and such, (or pull back if you use inverted) it's just difficult to make your brain think of it correctly, when you are used to the conventional way. His set up is mostly weird cos of the mic and elbows on the desk, the mouse is fine.
The fact that you compared this to a Piano lesson is far more accurate than you could imagine. I'm a piano teacher and I see the same problem in some of my students that you have with the Keyboard. They REFUSE to use all five fingers when playing and only want to use their thumb, index finger, and middle finger. If they can overcome their bad habits, so can you.
I played cello growing up and always used to really struggle with this, and I still do to some extent. Moving my ring and pinky fingers is so much harder than the rest of my fingers, they feel stiffer and more dependent on each other. I could never play notes with just my pinky because my ring finger feels the need to bend with my pinky, and if I fight it I lose coordination in my pinky and my whole hand starts twitching. Trying to move them independently of each other is actually painful. I've noticed when getting into rock climbing recently that I cannot do a three finger crimp because my ring finger loses all power as soon as I try to "separate" it from my pinky.
Oh I was reminded. My dad tells a story about when he was going to music school, and there was a trumpet player who was genuinely gaining national attention, he was so good. But, he played from the side of his mouth. Well, one teacher took it upon himself to "fix it", and basically ruined this guy's career. He could play with the proper configuration, but it wasn't near as good, and he never managed to go back to how he used to play.
At a trumpet masterclass I was told the story of a man the tutor once knew who became incredible at the trumpet the same way and never corrected it, he ended up drastically ruining the muscles in the side of his lip and was physically never able to play again
this is the most absolute mumbo jumbo jerry rigged contraption that i’ve ever seen you come up with & this kind of video is exactly why i love your content. the best way to imagine how your hand is supposed to be positioned is that your middle finger is w/s, pointer is d/e, ring is a/q, & pinky being shift i’m actually so proud of you tho mumbo, i am no longer worried for the physical well being of your hand nearly as much as have in prior videos of yours :)
First of. As fun as this video is, I hope you don't actually feel pressured to change how you are just to fit with how other people are. You are you. And we like you, weirdness included. Second. Watch next week Mumbo say he left clicks with his pinky.
it's worth changing for ergonomics reasons - a guy who plays video games for a living should play those video games in a way that won't mess with his hands - but i get what you mean about how mumbo shouldn't change just to fit in.
Playing Minecraft is his job, the issue here is you're suggesting something that could lead to health problems. The way he uses his hand on the board can lead to carpal tunnel and other health complications. It's smart to force this change now and never have to deal with the fallout of not having done it.
This is probably the most fascinating video I've seen you make. Your commentary really helped me feel how difficult it was physically and psychologically to push through and realize the new movement patterns. It made me so happy to see you make concrete success . Keep it up! I'd love to see a progress update in a month or so and hear how it's effected your gameplay.
and honestly, as a fellow big fella, resting my fingers on EAF feels genuinely good, the reason i'd never switch off WASD though is that not all games allow keybind changes and i'd hate to swap between different resting positions for different games. it's easy when the only game you play is MC!
Given the index finger movement, the thumb shifting actually makes more sense! If you aren't keeping your wrist positioned to use your ring and middle fingers along with the index finger, you're free the pivot in a way that makes it much easier for the thumb to get over there! Combine that with the now-obvious default to using the most dominant digit whenever possible, and it's basically a given! I do think you'll find it's easier to move around and play if you stick with the full hand, though~
I literally could not wrap my head around how he can reach the shoft key with his thumb while his other fingers were on WASD. I tried to imagine it, but I couldn't. Turns out he didn't!
Okay, when I first learned about the thumb thing, I thought it was odd, but hey if that's what you're comfortable with, go for it. Then I saw the video and it all clicked. I totally get why your press shift with your thumb with that hand posture. That makes sense. The weird part is using only your index finger for WASD. That has made the thumb shift make sense, but is very weird in its own right Most people put index on D, ring in A, middle on W and will move to S when needed, which is why thumb comfortably goes on the spacebar and pinky on shift. Index only for WASD makes pinky on shift look very uncomfortable.
Hey, I also wanted to share my experience. I just feel really uncomfortable pressing any button with my pinky. I feel like I need to give out extra effort just to press a button with my pinky. So left shift, I use ring finger if it's needed some times. But, if it's a long term thing then I usually rebind the keyboard and take the button near my Thumb. Does it feel as uncomfortable for everyone to press with Pinky? Or is it just me?
@@LordNNero i used to have trouble pressing shift/ctrl with my pinky, but after a while i feel like i just kinda trained my pinky to be comfortable pressing those buttons, but yeah, i get what you mean
I just rembind the shift key to be caps lock or something else higher up on that side of the keyboard because I have tiny hands and often stretching to shift is too far down but honestly I’ve gotten used to shift, it’s control that really does me in sometimes
I recommend rebinding throw to 'G' from 'Q'. It's surprisingly helpful, and you get used to it quite fast. It also means you don't throw out your pickaxe every 10 seconds
As someone who started gaming as an adult, learning shifting and WASD and all, this is kinda the experience, it feels weird, you stumble a lot, and then eventually you find the flow. Learning things is fun.
That's... incredible. I'm dyspraxic so I have to be super conscious with my hands until something's *really* in there mentally. So the fact that you hit all the WASD keys with the same finger... accidentally? It's fascinating to me. And explains a lot about your movements in the game!

He's used to associating using his pointer finger to move so when doing it doesn't make him move, or when doing it with the other finger, it triggers motion sickness. Agreed, it’s quite odd tbh.
Oh, many non gamers get motion sick from playing on flat screens, it's a very documented phenomenon, and FOV and screen/HUD shaking options are often explicitly there to battle motion sickness

@@andrewmirror4611Yeah, that happens a lot.

That's what I call a monkey brain approach to problem solving.
Still a thing for example in Brandon's video on the words of radiance leatherbound
I work in a factory, and a good amount of the manual machines that use any hydraulics require two buttons to activate. The exception being anything old. Every old machine there could well be a Deathtrap.

This is legitimately like psychological therapy, where your current associations are challenged until you manage to modify them/form new ones.

Cognitive behavioral therapy of the hand.
@@ohiorushbaby therapy is basically a synonym for torture

That fact that Mumbo pressed the wasd keys all with one finger makes so much sense.
In so many of his videos his movements feel clunky, like someone playing for the first time. But its just him pressing one key at a time
If you genuinely want to change this I agree with several other comments I’ve seen:
1. Get a new keyboard, new environment or position for your keyboard makes it easier to learn new habits. You might consider one with an ergonomic split layout.
2. Limit how long you use physical restraints like this and maybe add a pad of some kind.
3. Reward yourself when you do it right.
Gianormous ergonomic keyboards are so nice, it's a shame most of them are membrane and quite expensive cause the custom key layout
True if he is changing his entire typing experience might as well go with a bulgy split keyboard and get the suffering that is hitting y with your left or t with your right (whichever you prefer) out of the way.
Another really good option is to buy a mouse with programmable buttons (I just got a hero G502 and map stuff like jump shift and inventory to the side buttons!
yeah but I bet mumbo has aesthetic demands for his desk, he uses a Mac and the matching keyboard for Minecraft 😂
i recently relized that i ALSO press shift w/ my thumb, and wasd w/ my index. despite that i can type decently fast and when i do that i use my pinky so your not alone Mumbo
i have hypermobile joints, which are especially bad in my fingers, and i often end up pressing shift with my thumb and using wasd with my index finger because those fingers stay in position slightly more reliably than my middle and pinky fingers. the first thing i thought of when the thumb shifting controversy came out was to wonder if it was just less painful for you. etho explaining that his setup was more comfortable for him physically made the whole thing make perfect sense to me, too: a bad enough case of carpal tunnel could end his career, so reducing wrist and hand pain is crucial.
Seconding this! Mumbo you fit the type for hypermobile joints! Long and lanky and naturally making self-accommodations in the ways you use your keyboard. You can get little fancy joint holders that help if you are- talk to yer doc about it if this keeps being a problem!
Hes frequently said its actively painful, thats why hes so confused about why he does it lol.
i actually tried etho's setup, it's very comfortable! the only problem is, i couldn't figure out how to rotate the mouse inputs so i dont have to move the mouse left to look up
@@somearthling it's not a rotation of inputs, it's how you are thinking of it. To look up, you still push the mouse towards the cable and such, (or pull back if you use inverted) it's just difficult to make your brain think of it correctly, when you are used to the conventional way.
His set up is mostly weird cos of the mic and elbows on the desk, the mouse is fine.
2:22 his laugh is so funny, not in a contagious manner but he just sounds so incredibly enthused
ikr- something about his laugh there makes me smile
🐦🐦
I can’t get over how he laughs so hard he squeaks like a bird 😂😂😂
One finger WASD... Oh my god
I'm so glad I always did it the proper way from the start
Oh I was reminded. My dad tells a story about when he was going to music school, and there was a trumpet player who was genuinely gaining national attention, he was so good. But, he played from the side of his mouth.
Well, one teacher took it upon himself to "fix it", and basically ruined this guy's career. He could play with the proper configuration, but it wasn't near as good, and he never managed to go back to how he used to play.
This is kinda sad actually.
At a trumpet masterclass I was told the story of a man the tutor once knew who became incredible at the trumpet the same way and never corrected it, he ended up drastically ruining the muscles in the side of his lip and was physically never able to play again
oh i know a friend who is in the process of fixing his trumpet embouchure lmao, slightly similar situation but more self-aware probably
sounds like an asshole(is an asshole)
damn that teacher really went ''im boutta end this mans whole career'' 💀
It's all fun and games until the finger shock collar comes into play.
NOOO AHJAKSKSK 💀💀
it's all thumb and games.
From the thumbnail I thought that's what those cables were.

this is the most absolute mumbo jumbo jerry rigged contraption that i’ve ever seen you come up with & this kind of video is exactly why i love your content.
the best way to imagine how your hand is supposed to be positioned is that your middle finger is w/s, pointer is d/e, ring is a/q, & pinky being shift
i’m actually so proud of you tho mumbo, i am no longer worried for the physical well being of your hand nearly as much as have in prior videos of yours :)

First of. As fun as this video is, I hope you don't actually feel pressured to change how you are just to fit with how other people are. You are you. And we like you, weirdness included.
Second.
Watch next week Mumbo say he left clicks with his pinky.
I have been mentally damaged by that proposition
he should change the thumb thing though because that's leading straight to carpal tunnel
it's worth changing for ergonomics reasons - a guy who plays video games for a living should play those video games in a way that won't mess with his hands - but i get what you mean about how mumbo shouldn't change just to fit in.
Playing Minecraft is his job, the issue here is you're suggesting something that could lead to health problems. The way he uses his hand on the board can lead to carpal tunnel and other health complications. It's smart to force this change now and never have to deal with the fallout of not having done it.
@@vulpix9210big agree.
Mumbo just play however it is comfortable to you. Doesn't matter if its weird or not.
As a residential big handed player, I recommend Ren’s style of ESDF>WASD. Makes the other buttons easier imo
Ren did NOT say ESDF. Ren said EAXF.
and honestly, as a fellow big fella, resting my fingers on EAF feels genuinely good, the reason i'd never switch off WASD though is that not all games allow keybind changes and i'd hate to swap between different resting positions for different games. it's easy when the only game you play is MC!
@Nihilore if the game won't let you do it, rebind your keyboard keys, bwahaha
@@Nihilore well, tbf, anybody that actually knows how to type is gonna find "basically just home position" comfortable.
Steam input guys
That has made the thumb shift make sense, but is very weird in its own right
Most people put index on D, ring in A, middle on W and will move to S when needed, which is why thumb comfortably goes on the spacebar and pinky on shift.
I don't actually move my middle finger down to press S, I just press it with the middle of the finger
today i learned that most people put their fingers on wasd like that, my whole life i've put my ring finger on w and my middle finger on s lol
HELP THE SQUEEK THAT MUMBO MAKES AT 2:23 SOUNDS LIKE A BROKEN DOOR
I recommend rebinding throw to 'G' from 'Q'. It's surprisingly helpful, and you get used to it quite fast. It also means you don't throw out your pickaxe every 10 seconds
I do that!
I use the apostrophe key (') since it's close enough that the movement is almost the exact same, but far enough that I don't accidentally press it
@@randominternetartist2615It's called a backtick `
@@randominternetartist2615 That's my veinmine butto.
My throw key is V
2:21 And that, ladies and gentlemen, is the sound of Mumbo's last bit of sanity leaving his body forever.
