This is why Yes reminds me of the great "classical" music I've been lucky enough to hear. An actual symphony has movements that are about 20 minutes long, and they each have little interesting and gorgeous melodies, and take you lots of places. I guess, because I was hearing that as a little kid, I'm very comfortable with what Jon calls long form music. My favorite first symphony, known as The New World Symphony, became very dear to me, as I heard it and got to know it. I think that might be the key to prog: hear the song a few times. Maybe even put it on in the background and do the dishes or somethign, so you're not forcing it on your ear. (That can be really bad.) Before you know it, you'll have memorized enough of it that you know what's coming, and then you'll realize what superb ride it is. :)

The ABWH song you're looking for is called "Birthright".

    • @rtwbikerider
      @rtwbikerider 5 месяцев назад +4

The song itself sounds more like Teakbois, but I understand why you said Birthright. BTW, Rabin’s studio in L.A. is called the Jacaranda Room. One final piece of trivia: the final words spoken in the 90125 cycle was the young 1950’s girl in Steven Soderbergh’s concert film stating that the music sounded like a “big generator”. Foreshadowing?

For me this is one of the best songs on the album. Probably the most progressive song on the album and one of the best 80s Yes songs. Holy Lamb is a nice softer final.

I'm Running was based on a riff rehearsed early on in the Drama sessions.

    • @aprilstewart5929
      @aprilstewart5929 2 месяца назад

Holy Lamb is Jon Anderson's tour-de-force. And it's a perfect example of how he tells a story without telling it. You know what you experienced and saw, and you're verklempt, but the melody takes you somewhere you never imagined.
      Typical.

I reckon there’s playable tunes from both bands and those that would be too challenging.
Love Will Find A Way isn’t difficult. If even have a good lash at Owner Of A Lonely Heart.
Doing Rush as a true 3 piece would be a struggle, as opposed to doing Yes as a five piece.
In all truth they’re both great bands and I don’t really see them as competing so much as complementing.
The thing that really makes Rush the better band for me is the brotherhood of the guys. Aside from having to lose John at the beginning and some prior changing, the fact that those three guys stayed together and friends for such a phenomenal amount of time and career adds another element to them that really makes them stand head and shoulders above other bands.

Great track, originally one of the first tracks recorded in early 1980 by the trio of Howe, Squire and White as an instrumental demo for Drama before The Buggles joined the band. It was shelved then and revived for BG with a new arrangement and lyrics by Anderson. It still has that certain Drama feeling. 😊

This is my favorite of the two Rabin Era YES albums. It more closely resembled the old YES with its "progressive" structure & how it was driven by that great melodic Chris Squire opening riff that carried the tune throughout. I also consider it to be one of Alan White's best drumming performances, even echoing Bill Bruford in some sections. And like you said, Trevor showed off his guitar skills quite impressively.
I get that "island sound" similarity you heard, but note that this song was released 2 years before the ABWH album showed up & Anderson was the only common element in the two bands

When this album was released, I had digested everything Yes had released as a steady diet of my musical sustenance. While generally panned by fans looking back, I still played the heck out of the whole album.
I didn't have a car at this time in my life, so I did a lot of walking and bus riding with this tape in my Walkman.
By the time Union came out in 91, I had already shelved the cassette in favor of other bands like Marillion and Kings X.
I hope you continue this dissection of later Yes albums. While Union was amazing, Talk and Open Your Eyes really blew me away.

This came out BEFORE ABWH. The bass line originated in the DRAMA days. This album took them forever to make as there was a lot of dissension in the ranks. Anderson left after this tour for the 2nd time, the first being after Tormato. Then they formed ABWH, which led to UNoIN which then lead back to this lineup on TALK, the last album Rabin was on in entirety. here is the related track ruclips.net/video/brz-9aZ778s/видео.htmlsi=-p0DiSrOZB9AezG4

"the challenge is to chase the sound just to break away" always reminded me of Sound Chaser off of the Relayer album - Also - this does sound like it is from ABWH! This song features a custom bass made by Michael Tobias that was tuned WAY down so Chris could compete with synth basses.

  • @alwaysprepared

I notice during the 'island' sections of this song, the time signature changes. They do a measure of 8, then one of 6, then another measure of 8 and it repeats that pattern through those sections.... It sounds cool and isn't easy to catch on first listen...
I, also, think Squire's bass is tuned down to A-really beefy low notes in some sections!

With running you're going to inevitably arrive at some ultimate plateau one day. Kenyan athletes who marathon at speeds that exceed your fastest local 5km runner's personal best time, every 5km of the 42, plateau there, so it's not just mortals who experience this. At the moment I'm talking from a fairly abstract perspective, but it's still true that the longer you manage to keep just going without injury, the better it is for your connective tissues. Muscle fitness (at least to a basic level) is relatively easy to manage. (For almost everyone.) "Durability" is more difficult. In the very long run, durability is what you really want.
If you're managing your routine runs, and you're staying injury free, you're building up something that long outlasts the occasional lapse into unfitness. So maybe if the running seems to be going nowhere, it's quietly going a long way toward helping with the things that matter the most? I've been in a long lapse (had an operation, and I suspect there are more on the way, so it's easy to just say why bother at the moment), but things like flexibility work that I always included in things like runs has given me an increased range of motion that has long outlasted my development of more "puff". It's handy. I had a very stiff neck, and I can now still look into my blind spot while driving without injuring myself, after slowly working on increasing range.
Maybe you should try some "Knees Over Toes Guy" stuff? Build out the scaffolding, and don't get too focused on the cladding.

Chris' last great riff. The song tries to evoke the excitement of "On the Silent Wings of Freedom", but doesn't quite hit the mark. The Latin/Caribbean touches don't do it any favors either, but that's where Jon's head was at at the time. The ABWH song you're thinking of is "Birthright".

Been waiting for this one, JP. The best song on side two for sure, if not the whole album. I saw Yes live in '91 on their Union tour but they didn't perform this one. Congrats on your weight loss! So difficult, I lost a heck ton of weight during 2020 (can't remember my starting weight there so it was between like 30 - 50 lbs), but unfortunately gained a lot of it back after moving so I'm working on fixing that again so I'm right there with you haha. Keep up the good work you're looking great nowadays especially when you compare to like 3 years ago!
Also, I noticed there hasn't been much Alan Parsons going on, I would totally recommend their track "The Eagle Will Rise Again" from their 1978 album Pyramid. It's part of a trio with the first three tracks "Voyager," "What Goes Up," and "The Eagle Will Rise Again," but if I had to pick one I'd recommend The Eagle.

Tony Kaye is the only healthy keyboardist I know who refuses to play with both hands simultaneously.
He holds his other hand in the air like he’s trying to hail a taxi.
Can we all agree he’s easily Yes’s worst keyboardist?
    I
mean, the guy was kicked out of the band in 1971 for refusing to play synths because he thought they were a fad.
Always seems odd they asked him back. Pretty sure the fans were ok with his departure.

All the Caribbean sounds are surprising, but this is the most "Yes-like" rack on Big Generator, if we're thinking about the classic Yes style, vis-a-vis the 90125 style which is more prevalent on Big Generator. I get the comparison to the ABWH sound - can't disagree.

My favorite from the album by far. It shifts from whimsical fun to suddenly coming in with a heavy tone, as you said. But it is so damn complex and densely packed, is it too much? I can never decide it's completely crazy, but I think they really wanted to break away from the pop metal. Big Generator probably deserves more praise, but I think the time gap after 90125 lost many of tbeir new pop fans and the old classic fans were, like myself at the time, ambivalent about the 'new YES' . But with each revisit, I find something cool in tbis album.

First of all, you are doing fine. A plateau does, indeed, suck, but 40 lbs is a lot. It took me a year to lose that, and then *I* plateaued. Advice: stay away from the scale for a few weeks. Maintain your cardio as you add more and more of it; that's one of the few things that really will melt away those pounds.
I adore this song, and the whole album. But it was years before I knew what a jacaranda is- there's actually a radio station in SA called Jacaranda Radio. Excellent music; SA has a special vibe. These trees have PURPLE leaves. You should look up some pics of them. They look like they all took acid.
I always thought this song was more Latino influenced, especially because the 7 beats per measure is very common in Hispanic music. Either way, Jon's voice was FIRE.

Started like early The Monochrome Set, post first vocal, chunks sounded very like The Police, and think I even heard a smidge of West Side Story in here.....
