      Yes, but still, there is something missing from these latter day Yes songs. It's hard to put a finger on it, but it is missing nonetheless. There are lots of great musicians, maybe not the masters we've seen in Yes, but great in their own right. The skill that lifts some guys above the crowd and into stardom is songwriting. Anderson and Howe did most of the writing for the classic version of the band. Maybe they had just so much genius to share with us, and the genius tank ran dry with half the ouput on Tormato. The fact that the band broke up after that album is a sound indicator that they themselves knew they had reached the end of an era. I was elated to learn of the classic band get back togehter again after 15 years, and happy with the quality of the Keystudio material, thinking that the music would only get better and better. It didn't, unfotunately. But having the classic band tour again and play the songs of yesteryear was awesome. Why does "That, That Is" sound so disjointed when "Heart of the Sunrise" just flows? Hard to put a finger on it.

    • @wendellwiggins3776
      @wendellwiggins3776 5 месяцев назад +1

      @@Yesquire0 Heart of the Sunrise isn't a 20 minute epic as is not the also perfect short Long Distance Runaround. Clearly THAT, THAT IS was a bold epic attempt to repeat their golden era which I eventually come around to consider it the only great new track from the two Keys albums.The more I listened, the more I felt the fluidity within it's revolving movements. I think the over layed chant is where some might get derailed but for me that stylistic Jon trademark works beautifully and at best, made the song one of my favorites after every 70's song up to the songs from "Going for the One" with the exception of 'Parallels" which with it's intense heavy organ and catchy pop Squire-ish theme has never been a favorite of mine.

    Hey Lee! Great song from 1996. Once again YES's management drops the ball. The classic line up were creating incredible music. This appears on Keys to Ascension 1 as a studio bonus track, also on Keystudio. I so wish that the band continued down this particular path, but it didn't happen. Things fell apart as usual. The music on Keystudio is some really good work by the band. They really had it going in the right direction. Sometimes being a diehard fan of YES can be really frustrating!!!🪐🪐🪐🛸🛸🛸⭐️⭐️⭐️👍😎

    "Hard to find a through line" and your initial thoughts afterwards - spot on. One of the reasons Close to the Edge worked as a song is that the major themes were reiterated and developed throughout the piece, but many of their post-classic-era long form songs feel much more like a patchwork quilt than a Persian carpet, if you see what I mean. Having said that, I think they tried harder with this one than a few others, and the production/mixing is fantastic, especially the recording of the guitars.

    It will take several more listens to fully appreciate "That, That Is" but it is worth it. As for Jon's voice, I think he still sounds fantastic here. And to me, no different than he sounded back in the 70s. An absolute _jewel_ of a singer! Let's see how many of you recognize these lyrics:
    Don't forget to seek out the world
    If you want to stay [stake out]
    Your actions speak much louder than words
    And you get to realize
    Just as long as you have control
    Holding the fire
    Just as long as you can control
    This point of your desire
    Great days, it will all come to you [Wait as it will ...]
    Feel another future response [Feel it as a...]
    You get the heaven you like
    You get the heaven
    You get the heaven you need
    You get to heaven now
    Just as long as you bring the power
    From the inside
    Just as long as you hold the key
    From the inside
    Ascend and create
    Ascend and create
    Ascend and create
    Ascension

I love all Yes albums and certainly Bill's contributions. Alan is a master of complex rhythms and time signatures. I've seen him navigate the band through awaken and machine massiah live, he is truly masterful. I prefer the rock edge that he brings to Yes. Also, this album has some of my favorite drum production, period.

    I appreciate the objectivity of your comments, recognizing that each person’s opinion is entirely subjective. Not every Yes song is going to be Heart of the Sunrise or Close to the Edge or Awaken. I really wish that I found the studio material here more engaging because as a huge Yes fan of more than 50 years I naturally want to love wholeheartedly everything that they release; with the notable exceptions of Relayer and Going for the One(entire album) I still consider their first five albums as their creative pinnacle. Having said that, I freely admit that I listen to ‘Close to the Edge’ at least once most days; I especially appreciate the expanded version put out by Rhino records that includes alternate takes that feature Bill’s drums prominently in the mix. For your own listening pleasure check out Stuart Hamm’s ‘Outbound’ (bass like I’ve never heard it played before) and Ralf Illenberger’s ‘Electric Storm’. Stunning mix of acoustic guitar and white hot saxophone.

    For YES fans this was such a big deal when released. I love Trevor Rabin, (I really wish the ARW side of YES would have gone a bit further with an actual studio album.) but to have Steve back, and Rick was like water in the desert. This style and sound kept up through the lineups until Jon was forced out. Rick would come in and out for some later tours like the 35th anniversary but didn't take part in studio after the Keys stuff. A jewel in YES history.

  • @TDRFamilyGaming
    @TDRFamilyGaming 5 месяцев назад +3

    I was so excited for this when it came out but had that same disjointed feeling too - the transitions were abrupt or fade-ins rather than a “thought-out” musical transition. It seemed like a Jon/Steve epic of musical chunks that Rick came in and recorded some stuff after it was done. I think Rick was one of the better transition composers in early Yes due to his classical training. Which is why I think he was tacked on after the track was basically already done. Like “Tales” it could use some tightening up and focus to make it more powerful - at least I think that’s why Rick was frustrated w Tales. Also missed hearing more Chris harmonies. JEWEL! Also seemed too “clean” compared to the Eddie Offord production days. I felt like I needed every note to be less mechanically, sonically, and timingly perfect - and w more humanity, swing, variation. Still - it’s like critiquing Monet or Beethoven. It’s still awesome and these are nitpicking preferences. ;)

    • @gpg9516
      @gpg9516 5 месяцев назад +1

      Excellent observations, I feel the same way about the lack of cohesion here. Split it up into a couple or three songs that mesh better. Transitions weren’t very subtle. Also Steve Howe’s acoustic guitar ostinato reminds me of something Ralf Illenberger did some years ago. But it’s still Yes, so it’s still pretty good.

  • @thomassharmer7127
    @thomassharmer7127 5 месяцев назад +1

    It's more rotating themes than a single through line, but the more you listen you do discover all the themes woven into the other segments, sometimes very subtly on another instrument or another rhythm. But the transitions between the various ideas they each brought to the party are a bit stop/start. I agree about the lack of Jon/Chris vocal collaboration. Perhaps Jon's chanting/rapping flow made that more difficult . Chris was playing a piccolo bass (an octave higher than usual) so the fast, rhythmic riffs that form the backbone of the main rock sections are by Chris, although they sound more like guitar, with Rick holding down some of the deep bass end. This is like Yes starting again and finding out new possibilities, so it is a little underbaked in parts, but still a great tasting layer cake 😊.

    As Gary Numan has said in song, "We are embers in the flame, whispers, in God's name"; or maybe we are jewels in God's crown; a Jefferson Airplane song with the line, "We...are the crown of creation", is next in line in my string of associations. Here's a female vocal trance tune you might like from my brief list of favorites from the genre: Solarstone & Clare Stagg - Jewel (Deeper Sunrise Mix), ruclips.net/video/bhvzFf7OITY/видео.html

    Yet another Yes JEWEL. Rick: "I think KEYS TO ASCENSION could have been, now looking back, that much more had strong management been in place then, and we recorded in a studio befitting of what Yes should be recording in, because Yes has always pushed its recordings to the limit or always has tried to in the past, and with no disrespect to where we recorded KEYS TO ASCENSION, we were not in a studio where we could push limitations of, "Ah, let's do this and this and that and that." But having said that, it was still a good stepping stone for the band at that time, I think ... the two tracks off of KEYS 1 in certain areas were a little lopsided. But that was understandable because of the nature of how it was recorded; it was done, not in a rush but in a limited period of time and people couldn’t get together."

      What Rick said! Damn. He knows. It's his work he would know better then anyone else.

    I personally find Homeworld from The Ladder more cohesive. At 9:33 it’s shorter than this one, but it’s still an epic one.

    You need to give a listen to Magnification and The Ladder.... great albums...even HomeWorld......

    This is probably my favourite of the studio songs on Keys. However, I feel that the music lacked a bit in the production values and poor mixing which gives it a bit of a demo feel. Alan and Chris is my ideal rhythm section. There is an album Alan Whire did with David Torn and Tony Levin. Lots of Improvisations and perhaps gives us a glimpse of how Alan White might have been in King Crimson.

      Oooo Alan in crimson.... now thats an idea. I dig it. It does have a demo feel at points but I still enjoyed my experience as usual 😊👍

      The KEYSTUDIO mix is a noticeable improvement. Rick added some additional keyboard parts too.

    I mostly agree with you, but it works fairly well anyway. And the individual parts are soo cool, especially Steve's stuff. Chris's work is always great but not as prominent here as in a lot of their work. It's just a very eccentric song. A lot of weird time signatures or whatever that are really cool. But still a jewel.

    Have to disagree with. This song is a piece of art. Well done. But everyone has their own opinions.

    Love 'That, That Is'. I love how different Jon sings here, and as great as Alan is, I think Bruford would've made this even better. Bruford, while not necessarily "better" than Alan, is just a "more interesting" drummer than Alan. Alan rarely changes up the beat like Bill does. Bill would've had a blast playing this piece. I can only imagine what all he would've done with it.

    I'm goint to assume you've seen the "Avatar" movies with all of their rock arches and floating pieces of mountains. Roger Dean sued over what he, and a lot of other people, felt was the use of his intelletual property without compensation. Personally, I believe the scenery on Pandora was lifted directly from Dean's work for Yes, but the court ruled against Roger.

    I think the best Yes tunes are driven forward by Chris's bass and leading role in transitions, and that is lacking here. Make sure to catch Jon with the Band Geeks while they are touring. Ritchie Castalano is the best Chris Squire on bass and vocals I ve heard and the band is fantastic. Mind drive is next if you are still on the new stuff

    "Jewel" 🙂
    Honestly, i have the exact same take on this song, cool, but a little disjointed. You have to try Mind Drive though, it hangs together better (at least in my humble opinion) and is also the last long epic they have recorded.

    I feel like you’d prefer Mind Drive. Keys 2 should’ve been a standalone album and Rick actually left the band because of it. It’s way more cohesive and fun. Jewel?

      All the parts were great in their own right they just didn't connect as well as previous long epics did. But i definitely had a great time with it. This rocks.

    Professional Yes brand quality material, but not very inspiring, hurts to say it, being among their very tip top soul mate best-est fans since forever...

    Personally, the most weak of the epics of Yes, and Keys 1 studio in general a demo-ish kind of sound. Mind Drive, that's a great song, also all of Keys 2, a much better effort. That that is for me is very frustrating, they still have it, a lot of great ideas that dont needed to be in this one song maybe.

    This is basically yes filler I don’t feel like any effort was put into this music or this whole album to be honest it’s just a money grab it sounds like a mix between open your eyes and a BWH Andrson’s lyrics, sound way out of touch and lack of vocal melody that He usually has. This is the era of him just yelling words he did it on open your eyes. He did it on union he did it on this album and to Ascension two, he didn’t really get back into form until the ladder. I really don’t know what squire is doing in this album his baselines are not very cohesive or inspiring and Rick is just there for a paycheck. The only one really playing is Steve Howe and Alan White
